i find it oddly satisfying to read old reports of intelligent, scholarly, well-read men who confidently picked the time of the end.
and were obviously wrong.
xray, I agree that the WT's vagueness on dating hinders spectacular growth rates seen in the past. This, however, may work in their favour. The organization has gentrified in to a lazy, easily controlled cash cow. Growth spikes would be harder to manage and control. Some of the latest videos glorify the past history of the WTS. Tradition and loyalty override Truth (tm) and logic. What the WTS will have trouble maintaining, however, is the myth that they are the Only True (upstart) religion that is overthrowing the chains of the traditions of men.
They are no longer the newest thing on the block. They have followed the path of every other religious offshoot, and stiffened up as they aged.
i am asking this because i was always taught that the reason there are so many anti-wts sites is because witnesses have the true religion, and are therefore a special target of satan.
satan already "has" the persons in all the other religions, so he doesn't need to whip them up into a frenzy over the lamentable things going on in their particular churches.
satan does, however, use persons (ostensibly, like me) to slander the true god and his organization.
The Jehovah's Witnesses may be unique in that they are so vehemently opposed to other religious groups. Perhaps they bring some of the animosity on themselves.
Also, rarely does a religious group enforce shunning as completely and thoroughly as the WTS. (Disfellowshipping for smoking but not for wife-beating? Puhleeeeze.) This builds a ready-made group of disgruntled people with few expressive outlets. After all, who else besides a JW or an xJW can really understand the intricate weirdness of the JW lifestyle, or the anguish a former member undergoes?

I doubt the government makes them do it. Door-to-door never varies from country to country, though each one would have it's own laws on the matter. They do door-to-door because that is the way it has always been done. Here are the general Canadian rules on what constitutes a registered charity.
From a Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (who determine who has Charitable Organization status for tax purposes) document:
This category refers to promoting the spiritual teachings of a religious body, and maintaining the doctrines and spiritual observances on which those teachings are based. There has to be an element of theistic worship, which means the worship of a deity or deities in the spiritual sense. To foster a belief in proper morals or ethics alone is not enough to qualify as a charity under this category. A religious body is considered charitable when its activities serve religious purposes for the public good. The beliefs and practices cannot be what the courts consider subversive or immoral.
Other activities that advance religion include:

Excellent points. I have a sneaking suspicion that the door-to-door work also helps confirm the "persecution complex" in the average believer and solidify their faith. Nothing like a few beery curses and slammed doors to convince them the world is a nasty place slated for destruction. Also consider how often Noah and Job are held up as fine examples of faith.
I am with you, Amnesian. They have all these free labourers at their disposal, and they have to be kept too busy to think. The WTS really does not want spectacular growth. High growth would be hard to control. Too many independent thinkers. Also, how can they continue the myth of their exclusivity if just anybody were let in?
hey everyone,.
i have a question: i am happily faded but i recently got the desire to talk to an elder of my old congregation.
the problem is that he doesn't know i am faded (i kinda disappeared from jw archives while moving to college), and that i do not want to get into trouble by this.
Sandy, you got three pages of response to your thread, "Is everybody here a JW basher?" and you still don't get it? Sure, there are plenty of sincere individuals in the congregation. But they are constricted by an organization that places compassion as a distant second to other concerns.
i grew up in the religion and was baptized at.............supposedly the most important day in our lives and i cannot remember how old i actually was, anyways...... i believe it was 13 or 14. i was never disfellowshipped.
i have a "worldly" boyfriend whom i love dearly, and i no longer attend the "meetings".
i do not disagree with the organization entirely; in fact i am not even sure if i disagree with it at all.
Sandy, I see you are still undecided how involved you will be on this board, and that is OK. I am compelled, however, to respond to your original question. I do not bash individual Witnesses. I do challenge the doctrines and policies of the Watchtower Society, because I believe that they injure people and families. The shunning doctrine for instance, takes a terrible toll on families, wrenching them apart.
So I do not bash Jehovah's Witnesses. I challenge the organization.

From a strictly marketing perspective, door-to-door work, or cold calls, are notoriously ineffective. PSST. Don't pass this link on to the WTS. It might give them ideas.

how strong is your faith?.
Blondie, you are just zipping ahead! I can't keep up. The "gentle fade" must agree with you.
One of the most irritating phrases that the odd JW apologist uses when stumbling on to this site is, "I've got faith." I have heard my honey use the phrase as well, when I challenge him on a point of doctrine. I get the feeling this phrase is used as an all-purpose brain-salve to ease tortured brain cells taxed beyond their limit. There is also an implication in this statement that the hearer does not have faith. After I had heard that all-purpose phrase one too many times, I wrote a story about faith on this site.

What about the kind of faith that people have in each other? Is it at not least a reflection of the nature of faith in God? Does this kind of faith have anything to do with meeting attendance and time cards?
hi friends, .
the 1 year old baby of a very good friend suffered a terrible accident, he fell & broke his skull, fortunately he was operated on successfully.
i had talked to the mother, my friend & a faithfull jw, a lot about the un thing, the child abuse & other things about the borg.
Caballo, it is wonderful that you awakened that mother's natural heart! I agree with the others, a big victory. I do hope that baby will be OK now with no long term effects. Why
