I never became a JW, but perhaps my early brushes with cults inoculated me. When I was a budding thirteen a fella gave me a brochure for a back-to-adam cult that strongly promoted nudity, especially bare-breasted women.
I also subscribed to a "How to be a Yogi" correspondence course. My routine included sitting in the closet on a wool blanket (facing east, of course) and praying to an array of holy men.

Daughter counselled on dating a wordly guy
by minimus inmy daughter recieved this email from one of her witness "friends".
she is counseling my daughter (indirectly) about her choice to date a "worldly" guy.. hey, so, we had a talk recently that was about love & respect in your marriage.
the brother brought out that this was more for us witnesses rather than worldly people, because it seems that even in the truth now marriage has lost it's correct place.

Dear friend,
I have this dilemma, too, you see. I want to help this Muslim girl at school who just started attending some extracurricular activities. She always wears that scarf on her head, and barely makes eye contact with the boys. Her parents are very strict, and they are worried that she will be corrupted by the looser morals of American society. They barely let her out of their sight, and if her grades slip, bam! Curfew time.
Well, lately, as soon as she gets away from home she lets loose a little. She is really very funny. Who could tell under that scarf that she had a sense of humour? I am surprised how much she knows about the shows on television. Don’t get me wrong. She is a very nice, sweet girl. She doesn’t swear, and she obeys her parents to the letter.
Anyways, her cousin is giving her a really hard time. Like, her cousin is threatening to tell on her parents for little things, like eating ice-cream or showing off her ankles. I want to tell that cousin to mind her own darn business. How do you think I should tell her without being offensive?

I wouldn't want to contribute to their precious statistics gathering. Unless of course, it would be to add to their count of the anointed class.
No use letting good wine go to waste.

I hope the society drops it's cruel control techniques, allowing members to come and go freely. With enough lawsuits, that kind of change might be possible. By removing such chains from the R & F, I think the organization could mellow in to a relatively harmless organization. http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/10/47398/670607/post.ashx#670607
There is the example of the World Wide Church of God, which mellowed with the passing of it's charismatic leader in to a mainstream religion. There was a price to pay. The WWCG is a fraction of it's original size. The trick with the WTS, is that it's faults cannot be attributed to a single individual, but a COMMITTEE. Perhaps once all the anointed have moved on to their heavenly reward, the earthly organization can be dealth with.

Shunned Father, I am honored that you responded to this thread. I hope that my bringing this up did not cause you a lot of pain. I have nothing to sue the society for, either. But I do sympathize for the absolutely hellish year you were put through. Do you find comfort, at least, by campaigning against the society? Perhaps your action will force the society to change it's policy on blood and prevent future tragedy. I was especially touched by this:
Since last July , I have been allowed to see Cassandra my youngest daughter only three times, and only because they needed something from me. What a cruel thing to do, to prevent me from seeing her.
Are you continuing to pursue appropriate visitation/custody rights with your daughter?

I am deeply offended by missionaries because their fundamental premise is that my religious tradition is inadequate and theirs is innately superior. I find that an inexcusably intolerant attitude.
Hey, the WTS holds itself up as the most accurate, most representative body of Christians today. That attitude does foster arrogance and intolerance. Of course the householder had the right to take them to task. Any day, any time I can point out inaccuracies of the WT position, I will do it. One step closer to getting them to admit they are no better than the rest of us.
