I believe that it has been posted here before the speculation that it was largely promoted by Franz. Certainly he was the defacto religious doctrine leader under literature businessman Knorr.
It was supposed that Knorr went along with it because it was a control issue, (and that Knorr did not care much about it as doctrine).
They had at about the same time given up the restrictions on vaccination, and maybe they needed another weird medical rule.

Just finished their formative (Russell) phase with founder L. Ron Hubbard, now in the secondary (Rutherford) exploitation phase with takeover artist David Miscaevage.
They had a breaking away when Hubbard died and Miscaevage took over and shoved out the other inner circle people - just like the early Bible Students.
They are certainly every bit as controlling of their members, every bit teaching just as oddball a belief system, and every bit as greedy for money for the central organization. They are every bit as intolerant of people who leave them as the JWs.

Even if a person is religious - if that person is also logical, they would have to admit that they do not really know.
Therefore, it becomes very important to make as much of this current life in a productive way.
This, to me, is the grand failure of restrictive religions like the JWs - they limit real life accomplishments for some vague promise of paybacks "later in paradise" which they cannot prove or even accurately predict.

however, i can't deny that people are more open today about being closed towards religious interference in their lives.
The Soviet Union and Red China tried it for about 80 years or so - it didn't work out.
That was the last real large scale experiment.
