  It is just like you said after Blondies reference on why they quit food altogether, Sylvia - with the JWs it is ALWAYS all about the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR.

  They just didn't want to lose the money it would have taken to replace that food.

  The people in charge knew better..Those are the ones accountable..

  They would be the ones in a courtroom facing a Judge..

  Thanks, Outlaw - and you are right. I was just a 23 year old kid standing on the sidelines, and we were very lucky.

  The rotten thing was the we did it to our own people, knowingly, just to avoid losing a little money.

  Maybe in retrospect it is not such a bad thing that they quit doing volunteer-based food service.

  I know, Outlaw. That was a true story on a stack of bibles - it is one of the things I am still most ashamed of from my JW days - now nearly 40 years ago.

  The most horrible thing was that we just kind of knuckled under to the upper authority and let it happen on our watch.

  Come to think of it, this was right around the time that I started to really question WTBTS stuff.

  Well, I am sincerely glad that most of us here look back on assembly food as a good thing, (while it lasted).

  Maybe I am kind of in the minority either because I had a bad circuit or maybe because I was a close enough to see the sausage being made.

  Well, just a little story from the 1972 or 1973 "International Assembly" at the AstroDome in Houston, TX.

  I worked in a department which bought and distributed food to the actual food service people - (cafeteria and refreshment stands).

  We had two refrigerated semi-trailer trucks there full of stuff like frozen chicken fried steaks, hamburgers, hot dogs, and such. They had gas-powered refrigeration units to cool them. They ran out of gas overnight because somebody forgot and stayed that way for a whole day. The frozen food melted - it got to above 50F. My department head reported it to the assembly overseers and said that they should throw out that food as spoiled and buy fresh.

  They did not - they ordered them to serve it anyway. About half a dozen of us were just sitting there like the Morton Thiokol engineers waiting for the O-rings to blow on the space shuttle. The department head actually said to me - I just hope we haven't made a lot of the friends sick today or even killed somebody.

  Luckily, no reports of food poisoning came about. Another JW miracle, I guess.

  No joke - look at Amway or even WalMart.

  Yeah, 4K, wayy to pricey. She hasn't the money but thinks god will provide if he wants her to go. Well at least you guys think it's more a money maker than cult. I hope you're right.

  Wait - you mean you actually have a friend interested in GOING TO THIS??? I thought you just saw it on the internet... Let's hope you can talk some sense into her. EDIT - ok, I see a family member wanted to go in your opening post. Hope she changes her mind - this is a scam.

  Maybe it was just my district & circuit, but somehow I remember assembly food being pretty awful.

  Yet, almost everybody here has the opposite impression and misses the old volunteer food service days?

  Yeah - maybe it was just me, or just my locality - but I just lived on cokes during those assemblies.

  I left in the late 1970s, Undercover. I do recall that way back when, there were two kinds of food service - the cafeteria, and the snack bar type things. The cafeteria was eliminated, I believe, around mid 1970 (at least in Oklahoma) - leaving the kind of sandwiches, donuts, soft drinks, and fruit stuff that Sylvia describes.

  Another big change was around 1970 or a little before - foor service tickets were sold prior to the assembly, so you could not use cash at the stands. A lot of witnesses hated this - after the assembly, the left over tickets were worthless and you had to just throw them away. They even at one or two assemblies suggested putting unused tickets into the contribution boxes - but I cannot imagine what for, other than maybe for accounting purposes to see how many were unused.

  Well, I am absolutely certain she has nothing to say that I want to listen to for 10 whole weeks even if it were free -

  let alone for four thousand freaking dollars...

  Overall, it sounds to me more like a money mill than a true cult, but you never know; there are certainly some arrogant control freaking issues going on there.
