I was once at a door as a 15 year old kid where an older JW was going on and on about some message. I could plainly see a big grease fire light up on this ladies stove through the window. The JW guy didn't notice it even thought he was standing closer to the window than me - so intent on the "word"!
I couldn't stand it and said - Maam, pardon me, but your KITCHEN IS ON FIRE!!!

However, they could accomplish the same thing by providing it in PDF format from their website. The URL could be provided on the schedule at the Hall. So, I'm just not convinced that cost savings was the big motivator here. Could be, though.
Maybe they want to reserve the ability to change it during the year by just fixing the congregational copy? And probably still have not clued into the idea that practically everybody in this country has a computer on the internet...

The JW organization began teaching that your brain was responsible for only logic and cognitive thought whereas your (literal) heart was responsible for all emotion. (I kid you not.)
District conventions that year featured a drama entitled, "What Is In You Heart." When charaters in that drama were faced with dilemmas, the action would freeze and gigantic heart and brain models at either end of the stage would light up and argue with each other.
The effect was sort of an "Angel on your right shoulder - Devil on your left shoulder" parody.
OMG, YES!!! I was given the job of making the giant fiberglass heart and brain. Two funny stories - I made the things but was not allowed to switch the lights on and off because an elder caught my buddy and I doing a knife-throwing exhibition with Phillips Head screwdrivers on the unpainted and unfiberglassed paper-mache shells.
I complained about this to an elder (how preposterous medically the idea that the heart could motivate "bad thoughts") and he replied that it is obvious: When he was doing it with the wifey he noticed that her heart beat faster!!! ("doing it" is something mildly bad even with the wifey?)
I think that before they dumped this idiocy they even tried to find an emotional role for the kidneys as well.

Ironically, it was pre-1975 (1970 actually) when I tried to do research to prove that "Jehovah" really belonged in the N.T., and that the other churches had just removed it for "Lord" because they did not like Gods Name!!!
Stunned to find out that this was total B.S. - Freddy and the other Great Translators simply plugged it in because they wanted to.
Sure set up a nice foundation of doubt for when 1975 rolled around!

I was just asking about the contraversy over this new International Version translation - it is raising a lot of outrage with some fundies I know as it seems to be rigged for gender political correctness.
Just wondered if we had already done a thread on this and what the general opinion was...another board I go to has run 4 pages in the Politics and Religion section over this and impressions are all over the board.
BTW, I used the opportunity to mention quite a few JW mistranslations in the New World Translation, such as plugging the name JHVH with no intellectual reason, and the "teaching you from house to house".
Can I include the time I have wasted here trying to get a thread properly edited along with my time at the other board on my "service report"?

you'd get yourself in a jc for a tatoo but i've seen a couple of jws get a boob job and nothing happen... the hypocrisy in endless... .
We had a sister way back in the 1960s who had elective cosmetic surgery...I think it was a face lift, but nobody was really sure.
She was over-anethetised on the table, and ended up in a permanent coma.
There was never a word of sympathy from the platform - only off the record admonitions to everybody about how vain and silly such surgery is, and how probably this was an expected result for being like Jezebel the harlot. Maybe even a lesson from Jehovah for others to toe the line.
Real nice, don't ya think? More worried about stupid Talmudic rules they made up themselves than the life of one of their "friends" - and she was a pretty active witness, too.
my wife was talking to an elder at the meeting recently.
he asked her if she was still on restrictions (for our pre-marital hanky panky).
he went on to imply that they would probably be lifted soon.
If she had been able to describe more lurid and creative sexual details during her "committee meeting", I am sure that he would have remembered...
my eyes fell out of my head when i found this....i always thought the tree of knowlege had "magic powers" but the watchtower said no, no it's just symbolic.. this is how the verse reads in the nwt bible.
gen 3:6 "the woman saw that the tree was good for food and it was something to be longed for to the eyes, the tree was desirable to look upon......." {repeats the same verse twice!}.

Rather some insightful irony for a government body who thinks that the 144,000 is "literal" but the "one lamb" is also "symbolic".
