Wonder what they think about Greta van Susterain's "religion"?
Strange that she tries to keep it secret and that it is never mentioned in her broadcasts or by others.
i was looking at some clips of glenn beck and sean hannity over the weekend and i notice how much they admire each others religion.
when sean talks about mitt romney or glenn beck, he mentions that they are great men who love the lord and are examples of "great americans".. then you have glenn beck talking about a recent trip to the vatican where he felt gods presence and even had a person there tell him that "we know you are and what you are doing is terribly important.".
what is so funny is that if you visit websites of the mentioned religions, they do not view the other as "good.

anyone remember that?
i learned to read on that book.there were some very disturbing images, like the earth opening up and people falling into it.like upside down ladies and hippies.id love to get a hold of one and peruse it with a friend and some herbal medicine.maybe there is one in the attic?anyway, that and the image of the snake talking to the beautiful, bare shouldered eve,who was holding an apple, made a big impression on me.any else have any faves from that book?is it still being used?.
My parents started going to the hall in about 1963, when I was 14. I figured I was too old for this book, so never read it.
Cannot remember it ever being used for anything but to hand to the really young kids to look at during meetings.
i called a friend of mine who i hadn't seen since last labor day to see how he was doing.
we were in the watchtower together in the early seventies.
he quit going around that time.
Congratulations to you, your friend, and the daughter. We have had several unexpected exits here in the last week or so, as I recall.

Agreed, the direct Horus parallels Maher made are a non-historical attempt to antagonize christians just for the hell of it.
I do see some limited similarities, though, in certain ancient hero myths - as mentioned above from other sources.

a condition of his probation is that he have no contact with children.
a lower court denied perfetto's request to attend jehovah's witnesses services with a church elder acting as a chaperone.. the new hampshire civil liberties union and perfetto maintain the chaperone would eliminate any risk to children.
I am curious from some other cases of converted JW's while in prison,
Yeah - like the guy who held the girl captive for years and got her pregnant.
Hard to believe the local elders would want to associate themselves into this mess, given the JW history on the subject.

I saw that, Purps, and I was hoping that it would at least be said that the Witnesses themselves have a history with child sex offenders and are totally without any type of program to deal with this issue, or with members who become offenders.
What also was not clear was whether the guy was a witness before - when the offences went on. Nor what the local witnesses have to say about it...
I said on another thread that the Witnesses have provisions for electronic remote meeting attendance for old people or such - why not ask for that if this is all on the up and up?
i was explaining the basic teachings to a non-witness coworker the other day and we began talking about the incident in the garden of eden.
i told him that according to the society, if adam and eve had not sinned, the world today would be full of perfect human beings who never die.. he then asked "what about the animal kingdom?
would they be mortal and grow old and die and if so, how would god explain that to humans?".
But Sylvia - man being able to kill them (after being thrown out of the Garden) is different from saying that they did (or did not) have an inherent theoretically "immortal" or "everlasting" life before - in the garden of Eden.
Or, would have one in a supposed future paradise on Earth...
Besides the "dominion" statement, there were several other permissions given (at later times) to kill animals and harvest them for food.
Also, wasn't there something said about the animal skins given to Adam and Eve for clothes? Wouldn't animals have to have died to get their skins?

@Jwoods -
Are you thinking of Joseph Campbell?
Yes, I think it was Joseph Campbell. I think his comparisons of the Jesus legend to other ancient mythical heroes was less sensationalized than the above chart, but IIRC he did mention Horus and other heroes as having similarity to Jesus.

animals were not mean to be immortal, according JW doctrine. In fact it has been reasoned that the only way adam knew what death was, thus making the threat about the tree of of live understandable, is because he saw animals die.
Yes, I have definately heard this from JW teachings and I think it was written teaching. Thus, the "dominion" argument is not accepted in the form presented above by the JW theology. I still do not recall much of anything definate on what they think happens to the life of animals in the "new system of things" - I seem to recall (as speculation only) that they would still be mortal.
