I am Mr. Average. 2 kids - 1 boy and 1 girl. I live Average type of home (although it is in a premium area) with an average size mortgage. I drive an average MPV. I have a cat and a Dog. I am a bit of a laggard when it comes to buying new technology and will never be an early adopter. I occasionally think I could be higher than average but then I remember I am lazy and can't be arsed to work more hours or spend less time with the family (or in bed) in pursuit of a higher standard of living. So yes, by and large I am content!

Are you content?
by Newborn ini find it hard to be content...even though i have a nice apartment, good job, good health, family and friends.
i'm of course grateful for these things but i feel that somehow i always long for something else.
when i'm single i want to be with someone...when i'm with someone i want to be free.

Being Under Cult Mind Control is a Psychological Disorder - Steve Hassan
by flipper inthought perhaps some newer members who haven't heard some of hassan's thoughts on mind control might relate to this from their own experiences in jehovah's witnesses .
even though mind control is initiated by the cult involved in controlling it's members - hassan points out - it actually becomes a psychological disorder which can entrap the victim himself or herself - all the while - as they are being controlled by the leaders of cults.. on page 55 of hassan's book " releasing the bonds - empowering people to think for themselves " it states what happens in a destructive cult , " in a destructive cult, the locus of control shifts to the group or it's leader .
the new recruit abdicates his ability to make decisions.

Stem cvell research is the most important area a medical advancement since that of immunisation. Thank god you no longer have GWB stifling public funding of such research.

Question for believers: How does God set priorities?
by sir82 inwhile waiting for the bus yesterday, i overheard (wasn't trying - but due to his volume, impossible to avoid) a guy on his cell phone talking to someone about his likely imminent dismissal from his employment.. but he then went on to say that he had full confidence that god would take care of him, and he wasn't worried at all about finding new employment.. then i got home, watched the news, and found out that 4 million kenyans are in danger of starving to death because of a year-long drought there.. so i got to thinking - how exactly does god set priorities?.
the guy at the bus stop is not the first christian i've heard express his confidence that god chooses to intervene and help in the lives of individual believers.
he saves them from car wrecks, he helps them find jobs, he lends some sort of invisible emotional support to help them cope with the death of a child, and so on.. on the other hand, millions of people suffer excruciating pain for months or years before finally dying covered in mud with flies crawling on them - no relief from god in sight.. why does god help one middle-aged guy who's never been hungry in his life find a new job in time so that he doesn't miss his $3000 mortgage payment, but not send a little rain to help a land where millions of people are already living in misery and filth?.

IMO God has nothing to do with individual success.
Success is dependant on (1) The circumstances we find ourselves in and (2) our own ability to react appropriately to those circumstances. Some people are born lucky and success is inevitable (Paris Hilton, Peaches Geldof, Prince Harry etc), they don't necessarily deserve it, it is an accident of birth. Some people are born into dire circumstances that they have no control of and will always fail (e.g. a child born into famine struck region or war zone) again an accident of birth. Others have the option to analyse the situation they are in and make decisions that will enable to make the best of it (e.g a kid from a poor neighbourhood who works on his natural athletic abilities to earn a scholarship).
They guy on the bus, who has just lost his job, has the confidence that things will be alright, not because of faith, but because he will perform well in an interview, has qualifications or some other ability that makes him marketable (it may just be his self belief). A starving kid in sub-Saharan Africa may need a helping hand from a charitable institution to help him get through the circumstances he is in. That help may enable him to to get an education and he can then work to escape the cycle of poverty. The people providing the charity have made decisions to help those less fortunate than themselves, they may do do this because they have a faith, but it is their decision not gods.
We can neither blame god if things go wrong or give credit to him if they are tickety boo.

Impossible to concentrate!
by highdose inlooking back on my time as a jw i found that i sat at the meetings just willing the time to go past and just trying to get through it.
there would be a blip were i would concentrate on getting my answer in, just so that others didn't look down on me even more than they already did, but after that i would go back to sleep.. the thing is i was a very serious jw, and really did want to pay attention... i just found it to be impossible, 5 mins at the max and then drift away.... i even perfected the art of staring intently at the speaker while having my mind very much elsewhere.
and i wonder now how many jw's are actauly listening at all?.

I have got to go to a meeting tommorow , both the Patronising Talk and Craptower Study. I haven't been to a whole meeting for over a month. I will struggle to keep awake even though I will get an extra hour in bed thanks to the return of GMT.
