If there was such a deity, the only reason she would act that way would be to derive some sort of perverted pleasure from the suffering of her creation.

Atheists I have a question....and some comments on spirituality (possible ranting may follow)
by Jon Preston inok i just thought about this because its been in the back of my mind deep in the subconscious goop where i store many a curious thing:.
what is spirituality to an atheist?
what is its meaning?

I have no belief in the supernatural. I appreciate the splendor, percieve the beauty and feel emotion when I consider the wonders of the universe and the natural world. This is not spirituality, but it is nevertheless awe inspiring.

Starting from a false Premise.
by Phizzy inwe often see "starting from a false premise" enacted on here.
believers will start from the basis that there is a god.. bible believers will start from the basis that it is the word of god in some measure, and worse are jw apologists, they pre-suppose that the first two are a given, and that their beloved property company posing as a religion is god's organization.. none of those premises have been proven, some have been disproven, but we are supposed to go along with them.. now, you may be happy to debate on that basis, in fact it is probably good "exercise", but in the end i find their arrogant, unproven assertions begin to really annoy me, and then i stick in what is known on here as a "cofty", which is a short, succinct comment that points out the big hole in their presentation.. the only thing you find then is, either the apologist cuts and runs, or totally ignores your "cofty".. i think, even if we enjoy debating for a while with such people, at a certain point we need to call them out on their false premise, or premises, otherwise a j.w lurking here may simply accept the words of the apologist and gain nothing in the way of truth..

Wasblind, do you show respect for beliefs such as the Earth is flat, that Unicorns and Fairies are real?
Why should I show respect for beliefs or constructs that can result in the termination of intellectual progress?
I don't hold "beliefs", when I don't know the answer I accept that I don't know. I certainly never resort to disseminating untestable ideas as if they were truth.

......but a beliver in turn would say the universe is evidence of an itelligent creator.
That is simply jumping to a conclusion. Filling the gaps in our knowledge with mythology is NOT a sound premise.
the false premise is that there is absolutly no evidence for God.
There is NO evidence for god, so how that a false premise? Jumping to conclusion is not evidence.
It's all a matter of opinion and faith
Acknowledging we don't know is NOT faith or opinion, it is a statement of fact. Replacing "don't know" with "god" is an assumption without evidence.

wasblind - But what I can say, is that can be applied to both believer and Athiest
At least an atheist can start on the premise that there is absolutely no evidence for god and that god is an unnecessary concept.

The planning process is so slow now though with all the environmental issues - checking for newts , badgers etc. A friend of mine makes a great living doing bird surveys for building plots , wind farm sites etc - he just sits in his car counting the occasional sparrow or starling flying past & charges £300 a day.
Giz a job - I could do that!

Further to Phizzy's point, question the authenticity of the bible with an open mind too.
