Regulate Marijuana Like Wine (interesting article)

    http://regulatemarijuanalikewine.com/legal-and-political-analysis-of-regulate-marijuana-like-wine/.

i am ecstatic to hear that people are attempting something like this.

i have always thought that using marijuana could be likened to using wine as a medicine.

Being "south of the border" (I just won't say how far south), I see this with different eyes.

Those in favor of legalizing marijuana usually think that the criminal ramifications of drug use will cease to exist once marijuana becomes an item like so many others. The problem with that argument is that the same gangs that trade with marijuana also trade with cocaine and designer drugs, and, in places like Mexico, also work in kidnapping and extortion. Legalizing marijuana would only mean that one of their businesses would become legal. If marijuana were legalized, they would have the legal means to support their other "pursuits".

I find Darthfader's points very correct. May I only add that the drug problem is an international problem now, and it cannot be dealt with as if it were a domestic issue only.

Much attention is being given to the war Mexico is waging against drugs. Many people claim that the drug war can't be won. They seem to forget that Colombia was in a double bind. They had drug cartels that were the most powerful in the world at the time. They also had right-wing and left-wing guerrillas, all of whom also sold drugs (for a greater principle, they would have claimed). And they have achieved a consistent victory over drugs. That victory may not be as complete as one would like to think, but Colombia is now a very different country from what it was.

Maybe it can be claimed that the war on drugs gives money to the governments that enforce it, as Sabastious claims. I don't know much about that. I do know that, in Mexico and Central America, governments have no option but to fight drugs, or else they will become failed states. Guatemala is at the brink of becoming such a state. The war on drugs in those countries is certainly not about money. It's about how a group of very powerful thugs could eventually take control of everyone in the country.

Even if the shroud were authentic, that would only take us as far as knowing that a man was inside the shroud. It tells us nothing about who the man was, or whether he was divine, or anything. Whether the shroud is authentic or not is immaterial.

Someone says that is the shroud of Jesus. Is THIS PERSON telling the truth? How can we determine that from an analysis of the shroud?

I would like to think that people will be able to see through the deceit of many a religious leader, and also that things are not just the way we were all told they were. But I don't think that will happen in our lifetime. Or in many lifetimes.

I used to believe that secularization would proceed and that religion would lose more and more ground as time went by. That is not the case.

I'm currently reading "God's Revenge", by French author Gilles Kepel (http://www.amazon.com/Revenge-God-Resurgence-Christianity-Judaism/dp/0271013141/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1324515289&sr=8-8). Mr. Kepel shows the way that the three Abrahamic religions are fighting back, and they are winning.

Mr. Kepel says that the Oral Roberts and Jim Bakker of this world touch the faithful and give him or her something that secular minds do not fully comprehend. People are given the idea that God has created a direct channel to them. They may be old, destitute, they may belong to a minority, they may be sick, whatever, but the pastor gives them the feeling that they matter. And secularism just cannot give that. Just compare the idea of being no more than a speckle in the universe to the idea of having a loving father who is personally and individually interested in you. He sees your every act and decided to die for you so you would be saved.

...about a year ago, I was informed by a doctor that I might have as little as another year to live. In consequence, some of these articles were written with the full consciousness that they might be my very last...

...it has given me a more vivid idea of what makes life worth living, and defending, and I hope very much that some of this may infect those of you who have been generous enough to read me this far...

... any surrender to fatalism or despair would have been as rank a betrayal of what I hope to stand for as any capitulation to magical or wishful schemes would have been...

the governing body of jehovah's witnesses has decided (oct., 2000) that the positions of president, vice president, secretary-treasurer, etc.

in the legal corporations (e.g., watch tower bible and tract society of pennsylvania, watchtower bible and tract society of new york, inc.,) do not have to be filled by anointed brothers.

therefore, all of the brothers that were currently holding these positions, all of whom were on the governing body, have resigned.
