i know i got bothered by all the self righteous music police who would condemn me or others for our awesome record collections from early years as a teenager .

several experiences were really quite odd .

one brother came up to me saying i was wrong to listen to the moody blues " nights in white satin "!

OnTheWayOut - As a young converted adult JW, I had already chosen heavy metal and hard rock as my favorites.
The JW's my age or slightly older got me believing in the existence of the Satanic symbols and the backwards messages.

You reminded me of this CD I own. I always thought the caption on it looked like it was taken from some crazy fundamentalist literature. I didn't know until a few years ago when I was looking through an old Awake that I kept from back when I was a witless music nazi where the caption possibly came from.

I've heard "He was too smart for his own good." Even at that time, when I was "theocratic", I thought what he said was stupid and cultic. Should have been a warning sign to me, but it did come from a "spiritual" pioneer brother who seemed to suffer some type of mental slowness from his teen years before the troof when he was always high and not getting an education in high school...

When I was a gung-ho idiot, I was guilty of condemning other Witlesses for listening to rap.

At the same time I would listen to seditious punk rock bands. The taste in music carried over with me after I put on the new cult personality. Only this time I would mute the cd when the song said a bad word. If there were too many swear words I would skip the track and if the song was blasphemous at all, I wouldn't listen to it.

Now I listen to all the potty words and sing along, especially the blasphemous songs

Ew, this was around the time I stopped watching R movies and was highly judgmental of those who did. I still haven't caught up on all of the R rated movies I wanted to see but didn't during the time I was mentally living in the Dark Ages.

When Did You First Get Exposed To "Apostate" Info? How Did It Affect You?

as a kid, i used to read all the watchtowers of the 40s and 50s to see how the present day information developed from its original "thought".

i was exposed to many eye opening statements but i swept them under the carpet (although it stayed in the recesses of my brain) until the time was right.. so for me, it was a gradual thing.. how were you affected by your first encounters with "apostate" material?

I think I was around 17. I used to use AOL and would go into a JW chatroom, I think it was called JWsandFriends. Apostates would be in there and being the zealous jackass I was, I would brainlessly argue with them ignoring what they were saying and repeat my programmed cult BS back at them.

I was having my first forced-on-me bible study at the time, thanks to my mom, with someone at the hall. When my best friend and neighbor, who wasn't a JW became interested, that got me motivated and I became an unbaptized publisher and started studying with him. I had to study a lot to answer his questions and it helped "prove" the "truth" to be real to me.

If it wasn't for the bible study and the interested friend happening within the same year, perhaps I wouldn't have so easily dismissed what the apostates in that chat room were saying and discussing with me in email. What an arrogant idiot I was. I could have avoided the big mistake of dedicating myself to the WT Corp.

Anyway, years later I didn't really believe in the bible or JWs anymore, but still had those "what if" thoughts. I ended up doing research for a friend about the Epic of Gilgamesh, I'm sorry, I mean Noah's Ark, I get my comparative mythology mixed up sometimes, and came across apostate information that I hadn't seen in years. That pretty much sealed the deal with realizing the Watchtower wasn't Jehovah's mouth-piece. The Watchtower is more like Jehovah's a--hole, all that comes out of them is holy sh--. (Is the #3 rule really enforced here? I feel silly editing my grown up words). After the Noah research, I started researching comparative religion and that ended biblical belief or belief towards any kind of holy book for that matter.

Still go to the memorial and dumb ASSemblies. Although, I make sure I wake up late and take my sweet time before I arrive, which is usually after lunch.

Lost My Job Yesterday

I lost my full-time job a while ago. The place closed down and the bastard of an owner skipped out on paying me for the 40 hours I worked that week. Haven't been able to find another full-time job yet.

If everyone says you're a wonderful employee, you are. Places just have layoffs/cut backs/go out of business. I hope you find another job out there soon.

Today I put maybe 8-10 strawberries in a blender with ice, 1/2 tube of frozen lemonade concentrate, poured in some turbinado to taste.

Forgot to mention I added about a half cup of water, too.

Holy videogames, Batman!

i was in toys r us today and happened to see what looks like the greatest videogame ever.

i was blown away.

it's called "batman: arkham asylum" and the version i saw was for ps3 (which i don't have but may now have to obtain).

I've been playing a game called Call of Duty this week, and I'm blown away by the graphics and how far gaming has come in the past two decades.

Which COD? I've been into that series since it came out. This month I've played COD Modern Warefare and World at War at a LAN party. It was a lot of fun playing in the same room with friends. Espeically the zombie mode in World at War.

Will your parents kick you out or cut off fund$ or otherwise make your life difficult if you tell them that you are over the JW religion?

As of a few months ago, my parents know why I haven't been going to meetings. I was having a debate one night with my mom about something in the Bible and history. Well, I couldn't keep my mouth shut anymore about what I've been studying for the last few months and let the info go that I believe the Bible to be based off of reworked myths taken from other civilizations. (they don't know any of the information I've gotten from ex-JW sites or that I've been on them)

I guess it was good that they found out then because about a month later my dad decided to stick his nose in my business and open a package that came from Amazon.com addressed to me. It was a book that he about crapped himself over me buying (the book was about Jesus and sun gods). I don't see what the big deal was anyway. The Watchtower's been getting their information from the same type of books, which cast doubts on the Bible, in order to show the "pagan" origins of Easter, Christmas and the trinity, while ignoring other parts of the books that show things like the story of Samson is a solar-myth or there's more similarity between Isis and Mary than just the Catholic Madonna with child/Egyptian Isis with baby Horus statue than the WT will comment on.

Whoa, I went off on a little rant there... Back on topic. Other than the occasional argument when my parents' cult personality snaps, they don't seem like they'd turn on me. They've never been that spiritual, but still remain under WT mind control. Not sure what'd happen if I was DF'ed. They didn't shun my sister who was DF'ed for years. She even moved in. Of course, she wasn't DF'ed for being a mean old apostate atheist. They could still be in denial and think I'll come around, who knows... They don't know that prior to me not going to meetings, I gradually started to realized how cult-like the JWs are. The comparative religious and Bible inaccuracy research came about later after my friend told me he had a hard time believing in a lot of the Bible's stories. The flood being the biggest one for him. I looked for information on the flood online and came across an ex-JW site that showed his research and letters back and forth with the WTS about the flood. I don't remember the url, but it was a good site. He's probably a member here? That website started my interest in what I've been researching.

You do not state why, nor is it our business why, you are living at home. Apparently you are old enough to be on your own.

This isn't really a question, but I want to reply to it because if I was reading this thread, I'd be curious about why is the loser living at home and how old is he? I don't mind telling people, but I don't want to go into too much detail on the forum. Trying to keep it vague, I'll say its due to a lot of debt, companies I've worked for closing down leaving me with a lot of unemployed time in between jobs and no currently full-time job for well over a year. My age is... I'm old enough to appreciate cartoons like GI Joe, He-Man, the Transformers, Care Bears and *whipsers* the Smurfs.

Next time you are confronted, just start humming. Yep, and maybe start twitching....start with subtle eye winks...then maybe a facial muscle twitch...then go with little vocal ticks.... not full blown Tourettes (and not to poke fun at those who have it)...just enough to make the visitors think its really not worth trying to get you back to the hall.... dont need that little distraction during the meetings...

LOL! If I do that maybe they'll think I'm demonized and be too scared to come by.

I'm glad I could make some of you laugh by being both humorous and humourous. I was worried I might come off as really bitter instead of entertaining and bitter.

Hello,

I've been lurking on this board for a while, but now something's come up and I needed to make an account for advice. So, after months of being too lazy to register, I finally have an account to post with.

My situation is I live at home with parents, although I'm way too old to be... But, that's a long story how I ended up back at home, so maybe I'll tell that one another time.

Anyway, its probably been close to a year since I've been to a meeting, excluding the memorial and any assemblies. Well, I've had, let's call him... Brother Brain-Dead... I've had Brother Brain-Dead come by with someone else from the congregation a few times (usually either waking me up or coming when I'm getting ready for work) to waste my time in an attempt to encourage me to go back to meetings. The last couple of times he's been here I've successfully ignored him because no one else was home to answer the door and so I continued sleeping. Putting up with him, (especially when he brings the newly baptized Brother Over-Righteous) is extremely annoying, but now there's a new problem.

While my dad was at the meeting, one of the biggest nut jobs in the congregation, who happens to be the PO, lets call him... Brother... no, let's just call him The Freak. (This guy is waaay out there. You can't have a normal conversation with him. Its always spiritual and how wonderful Jehovah and the truth is. The tone of his voice when he talks sounds rehearsed and phony, like his not his real voice, but he's trying to make it sound pleasant and happy. The best example I can give of why he's a freak would be when he gave the prayer at the memorial, at an auditorium full of people and throughout the whole dragged out prayer, he was crying because how touched he was that Jehovah sent his mini-me to earth to die so we can touch ourselves at night and be forgiven by Brother Knorr up in heaven).

Sorry... what was I talking about? Oh yeah! So anyway, The Freak is going to come by with someone else, apparently randomly, because no one has asked me for a time that would be convenient or even if I want his crazy-@$$ over here. I want to avoid any kind of "encouragement" they're going to try to offer. So, my question is, what is the best way to handle this? I'm not going to start going back to meetings because he comes. I'm not going to agree to go back to meetings or service while he's talking to me. Its going to be near impossible to keep my trap shut and not tell him that he's a freak in a cult while laughing in his face, so I'd like to avoid even meeting with him.

What can the elders do if they come by and I decline to meet because I'm busy when they pop by, or I decline to set up a time for them to come because there's no need for it, due to the fact that when (which is never) I start going back, will be when I make myself, not because two people came by to read scriptures at an attempt to guilt me and tell me things I've heard a million times before? I've done nothing to get DF'ed, well besides creating a few websites to resell porn subscriptions, but hey, they don't know about that. Is being inactive and resisting their efforts to suck me back into the cult grounds for them to take any kind of action against me? I'm trying to fade because, like a lot of us, I have mostly my entire family and friends in the cult. Also, a large part of my income, which comes from side-work I do, relies on JW business and their JW referrals.

Any advice or similar experiences and your outcome will be greatly appreciated :)
