My Story
by ~Jen~ ini was raised a jw by very strict parents who, in my early teen years were physically and then later emotionally abusive all the while with my dad being and elder (and he still is).
i didn't want to be a jw then but my life was all about making my parents happy which started with me being baptized at 13. my parents constantly drilled into my head that most things were "bad" and i was "bad" i constantly did whatever i could to avoid being bad.
i had no life but then met a nice jw boy when i was 17. against my better judgement, i stayed with him and married him when i was 20. i didn't have a lot in common with him but he was really nice and was safe - he was a witness and even though i wanted to be in the world so bad i chose to be with him because he would keep me grounded, in the truth and away from where i really wanted to be because it was the right thing to do.. we were married for 7 years and have 3 sons.. for the past few years i've known that i did not want to be a jw even more and was sick of being fake.

Beard stories. Nothing but beards.
by Open mind ini've done a jwn search on beards and had some great reads.. i've learned the history of russell vs. rutherford and knorr and the hippies.. here's what i'd like to hear about.. either you or someone you know who grew a beard and the fallout because of it.. for me, i'd love to hear about the squeaky clean elder who decided to grow a beard and got removed because of it.. katie kitten, from england, on another thread told the story of her dad, the squeaky clean elder who grew a beard in the 70's and got away with it.. i don't think that would happen in california 2009.. anyway, what are your beard stories?.
i'm all ears.
(and my ears are freshly plucked.

I'll be honest, this is something that has bothered me extremely. There is no biblical reasoning for this whatsoever. It is one of those unwritten rules!

Unique vernacular and nomenclature of Jw's.
by AK - Jeff inboth robert lifton and steve hassan list the use of 'loaded language' as a key element of cults.
every cult has terminologies that are unique to itself, and often the intent is to polarize the membership into a black and white language style.
the cliches of cultish groups tend to stop thought, or restrict into a a single accepted viewpoint.. this is almost never recognized by the members while they are trapped inside - but is clearly evident the effects this had upon us once we exit the religion.

Incredibly written...and so true. I too at times catch myself using the terminology with "worldly" friends...it's difficult to extricate from your mind.

Why were you baptized?
by bluecanary ininspired by another thread.. i was baptized at 12 years old.
i had a cousin, two years older than me, who was prettier, more outgoing and more popular in the hall than i was.
i couldn't beat her at any of that stuff, but i figured i could be a better jw than she was.

I was eleven about to turn twelve, and got baptized because two of my friends were doing it at that same assembly. Besides a few months before i started the questions, i was advised by an elder that i couldnt pass the mikes or have any "privileges" of the sort without being baptized.
I wanted to pass the mikes....

HomeTown Congregation
by AK - Jeff inwhat a beautiful place it was.
a real 'crag' of strength amidst an evil world indeed.. mine had the 'trinity james' in charge.
you know, the 'service committee', best recognized by the pious look of pain on their faces, the brown smudge of shit on their lips right after the circus overseer arrived.. there was gossipping garbo and the merry pioneer fornicators, joy and marysue the racial bigots, and brice the janitor, expert in hiding his child-labor business from uncle sam.. elder bob, a happy pensioner, who designed weapon systems until he retired, but insisted it was 'not his department'.

by jamiebowers ini've just been informed that ca halls in richmond, va, pittsburgh, pa and possibly crownsville, md have multiple sattelite dishes and antenas.
does anyone know why?.
-
IronHill
Crownsville, MD does have residents in it (although not at the moment since they are rebuilding it).
