As a single adult JW for 28 years I was a closet drinker, it dulled the pain of lonelyness and dispair...My only hope for happiness was the new system and as the years passed by ever quicker I realized my dream was fading fast. I knew of a few other closet drinkers I guess there is an unspoken word or understanding you just know. Being in such a repressive mind control cult will drive some to sooth the pain anyway they can...

Tried and Failed methods of Field Service...

Paul wrote: “Really, woe is me if I did not declare the good news!” (1 Corinthians 9:16) He was not casual about the good news because preaching it meant life for himself and his hearers. (1 Timothy 4:16) We view our ministry in the same way. We want to help our neighbors. We want to show our love for Jehovah. We want to prove our love for Jesus and our appreciation for his great love for us. Hence, we preach the good news and thus live “no more for the desires of men, but for God’s will.”—1 Peter 4:1,2.
If they truely want to help their neighbors with a thorough witness why stick with the "tried and failed" methods they use, why not night field service when people are ACTUALLY home...

Apprehension about the holidays
by greenie inso...i've been feeling a tightness in my chest thinking about the upcoming holiday season.
you know, october = halloween; november=thanksgiving; december=christmas, etc.
i'm not sure how to approach them with my dub (for those who don't know, i'm a non-jw, never have been one, never will be).

Hi greenie I don't know your story as to how you married a JW anyway I would just go with the flow. If he's had no problem with it in the past I can't imagine why he would now object. Invite him to join in the family part of the holidays and hopefully he can relax and enjoy.
Funny story actually, when I became a JW at age 21 I cut all holiday ties with my family. My mother would invite me to Thanksgiving and say "it's just dinner" and I always declined not wanting to give the apparence of accepting the holiday. One thursday evening (thanksgiving) I was invited to a pioneer's house her family (all JW's) would be there with other JW's as well...Believe it or not I didn't even think about it but when I arrived I was shocked to my core to see a FULL Thanksgiving meal prepared complete with Autumn leaves with each persons name as to where to sit...All I could think of was what a hypocrite I would be to participate with this dinner when I had hurt my mother for so many years...I didn't leave and felt like crap...

How Did You Handle Sitting At The Meetings?
by minimus indid you pretend to listen?
did you actually follow along, listening intently?.
at the end i was listening more intently and getting more irritated by the whole sham..

It was actually the mind numbed meetings that lead me to my path out...sitting there listening to the same crap year after year I would zone out. My mind would wander on things I had never considered ,I would thumb thru the Bible and begin to think "this stuff just doesn't make sense". For years I would just flip to the required scripture and never even think about it. As I began my "personal" bible study there in the hall it finally made sense the Bible (to me) was not the word of god but of man...Then I began to study the history of the WTS, I would never consider apostate sites but I didn't need to their history, beginning with Russell, proved to me it was all a sham...

AGuest...I suppose everyone looks for God in their own way for me it was a search that began with the Bible itself. At first that may seem like an odd statement, what I looked at was not the story of the Bible but what exactly IS the Bible. Who wrote it, where did it come from and how has it arrived to us in its form today. It was that search that lead me to believe the Bible is not the word of God but the word of man. So if by search for God from what is suppose to be his word and I did not find his word I did not find God...

For me it was a matter of why I "believed" what was the need, where did it come from. In my case I was born to a Christian family, became a JW at age 21 and for the next 28 years...When it was my time to leave JWdome a little something inside me said, "search for God elswere" and I did but did not find him...Now having said that we live in a world of believers, everyone has their reasons or back ground, to me it is a matter of acceptance not just of believers but of that I never accepted before, you know what I mean "JW's right, everyone else wrong" attitude. I guess it's a matter of finding a balance not just of faith or lack of but of all things...

Burning literature (pics) and police called on Snakes :P
by SnakesInTheTower inso for some time i have been threatening to burn my remaining watchtower literature.
i had gotten rid of two bookcases worth via a thread or two here, mailing it to various jwders for (hopefully) nefarious purposes.
i was down to one last 32 gallon rubbermaid container.

I think it was a big mistake to burn those books Snakes when the big "A" comes there may be a shortage of toilet paper...
