XYZ,
Actually, I'm not a Witness any longer. So...I'm not sure whether my friends and family are particularly concerned about whether I post. The obvious answer is.....no.
Erm, not sure what you feel I have written is a "defence" of the WT. But feel free to enlighten me.
Warm love to you and yours

if one thing will be remembered about the summer of 2010 with the wt society - it will be that they took every opportunity to justify the " overlap generation " theory and employ damage control methods to keep witnesses from hearing anything negative about the wt organization by warning them about apostates or the internet.. in the aug. 15th wt ( witness version ) on pg.
24 in the article " let the law of loving kindness safeguard your tongue " notice these 2 points where the wt society tries to manipulate jw's minds regarding how they use their tongue in showing alleged " loving kindness ".. the 1st point concerns being a " helpful " witness and showing alleged " loving kindness " to a fellow believer if they are turning astray from wt principles.
it states in paragraph 16, " what should we do if we observe a christian heading in a direction that conflicts with bible principles ?
Oh dear
It won't be long before some enterprising Writing Department Bod writes an article that shows how the Prophet Nahum foretold the internet, and the words of opposers being spread abroad on it!
"The Bible - Misapplied since c1400 BCE."

in the new dvd governing body member david splane discusses the fact that the bible students did not simply disappear after russell died in 1916. he says this is because jehovah had already chosen the organization to do his work.. this is not a work of man, this is a work of jehovah god.
it's evident that jehovah had already chosen this organization, because of the faithfulness and the sincerity of the men behind it.
it's obvious that jehovah had already chosen this organization to get his work done.
From what I can remember, the 1919 teaching is reliant on the 2 witnesses going to heaven in revelation after the death, which the Society relate to the arrest of Rutherford and his associates. Is that correct?
Strange, for if God only came to the temple in 1919 as per Malachi, then from 1874 onwards, the whole of Christendom was still not "officially" part of Babylon the Great - unless the 1919 "choice" was rather a final choice.
I can see how the GB can state this - in essence, they can state that from 1874 - 1919, God was evidently giving warning to "Babylon the Great" thru his chosen people, and then in 1919, he gave final confirmation of his choice by "resurrecting" the JW organisation, and since that date, none has been able to stop their worldwide witness, as a class.

Snowbird,
that is a good point. But it seems like it is simply dropped in, almost randomly, into this article. And that makes me wonder if it is either
A) A constant theme; or
B) An acutal precise issue, such as this website

Thank you Flipper,
that is very strange - I wonder if they have anything specific in mind? I just find the paranoia a little.....well, it seems to be increasing.

i thought i would share something i remembered the other day.
hope it sheds a little light for you.. when you translate publications for the society, you often become aware of logic gaps.
Sorry Bohm,
In the UK, a "blinker" or more accurately a "set of blinkers" is a device placed on the eyes of a horse to narrow its' field of vision, often when travelling on a road. The word is used of humans to denote that people are "narrowminded" and exclude information from consideration that may contradict their beliefs.
In this context, translators decide to pretend there are no logic gaps, force the translation, and often get complaints from the field that the material is incomprehensible.

Besty,
Sorry for this late reply. To answer your question directly, the BTD is one of 2 primary databases - the WT Translators Question Database, and the BTD. Both are accessed on the Society's system and are directly managed by Brooklyn. The local Translation Computer Department provides the databases to translators - the BTD is available only to team overseers and teams translating the Bible. "Normal" translation teams do not have direct access to the BTD. I am hoping to provide a lot more info on a freeminds article sometime soon. I'm not a computer guy, so can you get BTD? I have no idea. Maybe someone with computer experience can weigh in here. However, for any future legal reference, of course I am not advocating any illegal practice.
Blues Brother/OTWO -
The redefinition of terms is a vital plank in the WT translation approach. Simply put, the translators have to be as vague as possible in certain key areas. The principle in Bible Translation is - "say what the Bible says", which is ridiculously unhelpful. In actual practice, it is "say what you think it means." And in "primary context". The issue for many WT translators is that the magazines and publications are strechng Bible verses......and translators have to deal with that. There are two ways - blinkers, or liberalism in translation. Both attitudes exist, and both are at each other's throats. The Writing Department itself is torn between this. The facts are, when you have to translate something form one language to another, ridiculous flaws in logic are apparent - and the Writing Department know it.
As for debates - it was a lot worse than that. OTWO, punches have been thrown, people have been spat at, translators have walked out of filming and translation sessions, and mental illness has been prevalent in Translation, leading the Society to ask BC's to treat Translation Teams with respect and care, since the job is "stressful". No, what is stressful is the Society's approach.
The ironic thing is - if the Writing Committee decided to be straightforward, and change the undercurrent of the "WD articles are virtually sacrosant" and instead went more completely down the meaning based translation route (which they do in word, but not action) they would get many more converts. The Society has some very skilled translators - if the Society eased off it's centralising tendency and was just slightly more liberal, they would be far more successful in duping people into the organisation.

You know, according to the WT logic, it might be considered "pointless" to resurrect people who will only die again, to heal sick people who will only get sick again. It seems "pointless" to feed the hungry, to provide clean water for the thirsty, and clothe the naked, when they will only need food again, want a drink again, and need fresh clothes again. It seems a waste of vital energy if we spend time on improving social and educational conditions for the poor and the disadvantaged, if not proclaiming the kingdom.
So if, according to a twisted kind of logic, strictly humanitarian drives are "pointless", then there was an abnornal man, 2000 years ago, who seemed to do all that "pointless" stuff, AND proclaimed the "good news." For JW's, there is a little question there - why not do what this strange carpenter in Judea did, about 2000 years ago - don't just promise "jam tomorrow". Do something about delivering some jam today.
