How big is Bethel in New York?
by Nicolas injust asking out of curiosity... i always heard about it through the wbts publications so i assume what they were saying wasn't exactly like the real thing.
i remember how it was supposed to be a perfect place to work and everything was supposed to be in harmony with each others.
i even dreamed of going to that place, when i was young.

Common JW dating practice?
by JimmyPage inthe other day i was at a drive-thru when i saw a couple of young dubs eating inside by themselves with no chaperone.
they then left in separate vehicles.
it reminded me that when i was dating my jw wife it was her idea to take separate vehicles to avoid arousing suspicions.

In my brief experience, I've met many, many divorced JWs all under THIRTY! To be very honest, I don't know that many divorced couples in my own group of (non-JW) friends. In addition to the numerous divorces I've noted, it also seems that these marriages don't last longer than a year or two.
I've also seen a loophole of getting engaged but then breaking it off. Any of you try that?

My JW mom and sister are attending a birthday party I'm hosting
by Bumble Bee inmy mom knows my position on not being a jw anymore, and we have a pretty good relationship after some rocky patches.
my younger sister is the only one that is still a jw, my older siblings had all left many many years ago, and my younger brother and his family has left now as well.
we have had a few non birithday, birthday parties in the past, no candles on the cake, no singing happy birthday, but just all getting together as a family and having a good time.

Sorry! Reread my post and it didn't seem clear. What I was trying to say is that all the JWs I know, plus their literature says: "you should show love everyday, not just on certain occasions" but I only see them giving each other gifts and having get togethers on wedding anniversaries...

OTWO - JWs can't toast? I didn't know that. Or was it bc it was a toast to your bday?
Everyone - do any of you have experience inviting your Dub relatives to bday parties and other holidays? Right now it seems like our life is compartmentalized, but it would be nice to have people there. I'd like to give them a way to participate without feeling uber guilty or uncomfortable.
I was also thinking of explaining it to my Dub that I follow his traditions (like celebrating anniversaries, going to the Memorial), and these are MY traditions, so he should also participate. The thing that gets me sometimes is that you should show love everyday, not just on certain occasions. Really? How often do Dubs do that? As far as I know, only on their wedding anniversaries. Seems like the same thing to me!

Oct.15th WT GB Tells JW Rank & File-You are Our Belongings Stay Humble
by flipper inthe mind control in this latest oct.15th is amazing.
our lurking jw friend sent us this and it basically tellls witnesses that their opinions don't matter and only god is good .
it belittles independent thinking and explains that each rank and file jw is owned by the alleged " faithful and discreet slave " .

I mean, seriously, not to post twice in a row, but I just reread that sentence and I still can't believe a normal human would read that sentence and be okay with it!!!!!! W-O-W!!!!!

Is it possible to get a copy of this? This:
Those with an earthly hope SHOULD THEREFORE , recognize Christ as their head and BE SUBMISSIVE to the FAITHFUL AND DISCREET SLAVE and it's GOVERNING BODY and to the MEN APPOINTED as OVERSEERS in the congregation.
is exactly the kind of thing I tell my man that bothers me about what JWs are taught. They ARE NOT taught to think for themselves. He gets so mad when I say they just listen to the men in Brooklyn, but it's true and to me, this demonstrates it! Will the AWAKE! for the same time period reflect any of these messages? I don't really know how the magazines work, but I love seeing the watered down version when I know what's in the private stuff.

Growing up as a JW?
by Nicolas inhi, just wanted to share a bit of my experience, especially in my childhood.
i've been a lurker for a while here.
dunno if my experience is unique (probably not), i've been in the jw for almost all of my childhood, then i became inactive around the age of 12 because i followed my parents when they decided to become inactive.

Going to school is a great way to get to know some new friends! There are campus organizations you can join. There might also be some sort of sports (like coed basketball or football, etc.) that you could get into. You could look at one of those "Best Places to Live" articles and move to a city or spend some time there for a new adventure. Are there any sports teams you like? You could join their booster club and meet people. And please don't worry about not being interesting enough for your friends! Friends draw from each other and share interests to make everyones lives more interesting!

What do non witnesses actually think about the evil practice of disfellowshipping?
by jambon1 inwhenever i have mentioned this practise to people who don't know much about the witnesses (although they should know about them due to the worldwide preaching activity .
to most right thinking people it is absolutely just not an option to have no contact with your immediate family.. one lady said to me "i'd rather rip my heart out".. what has been your experience when people find out that jw's carry out this evil practise?.

From my non-Dub angle, I think it's cruel and bizarre. It'd be one thing if you df'ed someone for being a molester and didn't want to have contact with them, but not for the many lesser reasons you can get df'd as a Witness.
I think an even more bizarre practice that me and my non-Dub friends and family find just completely wacky (and very cultish) is the telling on people standard. What's this officially called? And what's the biblical reasoning for it?

What do you do for canker sores?
by daniel-p inbecause mine is hurting like a mofo here... it's at the back of my cheek, where my lower and upper jaw connect, and i can't close my teeth without chomping on it because its swollen out.
my lymph glands under my neck hurt to the touch, the entire side of my head down to my shoulders hurt.. i've tried peroxide mouthwash, salt mouthwash, orajel (which help for about 30 seconds), and aspirin placed on it (which helps for about ten minutes).
today, at work, i put a bunch of salt directly on it which just stung like the dickens for about 10 minutes and now i'm back to square one with the ongoing pain.

Hey Daniel P,
(I didn't read all the other posts so I don't know if this has been said) You should also know that the stuff they put in shampoo and toothpaste, etc to make it foam is an industrial detergent that is SUPER irritating to cankersores. My cousin had major trouble with them and switched to a line a products that are made without the stuff (I think the detergent is called sodium laurel sulfate). Now she uses this stuff all the time. It's called Biotene and they make mouthwash and toothpaste that can be bought in a drug store (not big chain like Wal-Mart or Target). You should switch to using those all the time. She says it's amazing how much better her mouth feels.
