Well, as a compromise for yourself and the 'rents, maybe go but don't dress up. And you don't have to do the door knocking if you don't want.

Halloween
by wantstoleave ini live in a country where this isn't typically a big event, and only in recent years have more started doing the whole 'trick or treat' thing.
however, i have been invited to a halloween party.
i've never participated in it before.. problem is this: i am still scared of my parents, they are a big part of my life, and know most of everything i do.

Can you call it something else for them? Does it have a theme? I've been to theme parties that weren't on Halloween, but no reason they couldn't have been. It's all your perception too, right? Your intention?

Other Religions Compatible to JWs
by greenie injust wondering, are there any religions that exist that might be palatable to dubs?
i realize all of their teaching goes against this, but i'm wondering from an outside or neutral view, can you think of any that would work for someone who was/is a jw?
southern baptist?

True, but I don't think that would work for either of us, BS.

Baptism Questions??
by lepermessiah inthis forum tends to get me thinking about things from the past and then roll my eyes.. i was recalling a particular pharasee in the congregation who used to love showing everyone how "smart" he was.. when i would go over the questions with someone, we would fly through them because it was usually with kids who were raised as jw's and could answer then in their sleep.
(besides the fact it was an "open book" quiz.).
well, mr pharasee used to always make it into a marathon session and take 2-3 hours to go over one section of the questions with someone.. he could take a simple question like "what is god's name?

Hmmmm...I guess I was more thinking of proposing a compromise, a step toward each other (him, ultra conservative, me, ultra liberal), not a lateral or otherwise move. =)

how are the JW's viewed from the outside?
by tigeress ini know while in the org we get told alot to tell everyone that we are jw's, cos its reputation is so good.
but that dosn't explain why people still refuse to answer the doors to them, or hide when they come aknocking.. so how are jw's really viewed by the outside world?.

On second thought, I'd have to heartily agree with AllTimeJeff. Before becoming involved with one, I never really gave a second thought to them, besides what I mentioned above.

Just wondering, are there any religions that exist that might be palatable to Dubs? I realize all of their teaching goes against this, but I'm wondering from an outside or neutral view, can you think of any that would work for someone who was/is a JW? Southern Baptist? Seventh Day Adventist? Greek Orthodox? (I'm brainstorming here...)

From an outsider's POV I can tell you that formerly I didn't think much of them, just that they were some strange super conservative Christian group that would leave scary and creepy pamphlets on your car or your door. Definitely had my door knocked on and didn't answer it. After meeting my Dub but still not knowing much about the religion, I revised my views to thinking they were nice but ultra conservative Christians. After attending my first JW event, I thought they were frightening, mislead and ultra conservative Christians. That's where I am now. Oh, and I wouldn't apply that label most of the individual JWs I know, just to the organization.

I like how the article compares Christmas and Easter to child sacrifice and various sexual practices:"In the past God condemned certain practices that may have been tolerated in some communities. These include child sacrifice, the misuse of blood and various sexual practices. Likewise, certain customs that are common today are clearly not in harmony with Biblical principles. Among these are non-Biblical traditions connected with religious holidays such as Christmas and Easter or with superstitious practices related to spiritism."
