False Memories
by Jang indo any of you know of anyone who is or has been a jw who has supposedly recovered memories of being sexually or ritually abused as a jw?
i figured that this must have arisen in the org because of the article they had in the mags about 4 years back on the subject.
since then i have heard of a couple who have claimed to heave been satanicly ritually abused as jw's .

Actually waiting, you are right, I should have made myself a little clearer.
I think the difference between False Memories and remembered real memories is that the latter you know are there but you decide not to think about them and push the drawer closed every time it opens whereas the false memories you were never conscious of at all.
Thankfully a lot of really good research has been done on memory since this phenomena developped, and we are beginning to get a clearer picture of which is which.
A lot of holocaust victims, including those who were young at the time, have been interviewed etc as have people who have been in disasters and other traumas. The findings have been that they recall if they decide to, but they have surivived because they have deliberatly suppressed it.
Multiple Choice exams work on the principle of triggering the memory and this happens for ordinary memory. If the subject is not raised then the memory isn't triggered into recall .... but that doesn't mean you have repressed it .... it is just the way memory works.

I saw one session over here with Rodney Howard Brown and they sang and chanted for 3 hours before he finally spoke and the first thing he spoke about was being a good steward and giving money .... then around came the buckets! Really gets under my skin because it is as destructive in the end as being in the WTS or any other cult!

Alpha, I am not interested in hearing stories ... I just wanted to get some idea of how extensive the problems is among the different fundy groups.

When JW's leave they find it hard to explain their background to anyone who hasn't been there - done that. Most outsiders have no idea of what we went through.
The same applies here Alpha.
Unless you have had this happen to you and your family then you don't have a clue whati t is like and whether you can get on with your life etc etc
Now, there are some of us who have been accused like this who have managed to get over the worst of it and are now fighting back by trying to change laws, guidlines for therapists etc etc. We are damn well doing something about it instead of sitting on our butts and bemoaning our fate.
This is the same as there are a few of us who went throught the JW's etc and instead of sitting on our butt and bemoaning our fate we decided to use our experience and have been kicking butt for 20 years and we have kicked butt so much that things changed.
I have seen so many come out and go into the woodwork in the last 20 years .... and it never ceases to amaze me how easy they can criticize those of us who have done the groundwork. I know that there have been times when Randy Watters has wanted to throw in the towel for this same thing and that applies to almost all the others I know around the world who have been battling this for years.
The only thing that keeps us going is how strongly we feel for those we left behind.
The same applies to the false memory problem ... the thing that keeps us strong is working towards changing things so more families are not destroyed.

RandyAussie, what makes you think that Jw's are the only ones I am asking?
This is a board for JW's and xJWs ... so I ask about JWs ....
On the Mormon board I have asked mormons
On the Christian boards I have asked Christians ....
I do not want to hear their stories ... I just want to get some idea of figures ...... Maybe you should also learn to read ...
And as for dredging up unhappy memories about this .... let me tell you frankly mate you have no idea what you are talking about .....
If you were the accused in these circumstances you wouldn't have to worry about having someone dredge up the memories .... they are there all the time --- and I have yet to talk to a family who doesn't feel the same.
As for helping, just what the hell do you think I do with my time?
Maybe if you did as I have already asked and come and see for yourself you may be just a little less judgemental and a little more human.

Kent, just as we changed and came out ot the WTS, the powers that be on H2O can change too ...and I believe there has been a big change in attitude .....
The "moderation" on H2O will not be about deleting messages but about moving them to their right areas for newbies, and any that are really a bit sus will go to the Deletion Bin where they can still be answered and where they can be debated about. The Trash bin is only for PORN and so on ..... and you know that we did get that on the H2O board ....
There is a certain amount of moderation here too Kent, and recently Simon had to take action against someone ....

RandyAussie - you didn't read my story did you.
Our family are victims of this! Our daughter has not spoken to us for 6 years and we have not even met our grand daughter. Our son has gone along with his sister because she has convinced him that he just can't remember it all. Only the youngest son told them it was all crap .... but then he is a bit of an independent thinker like his mum
We were also separated from our sons children until he and his partner split and she didn't go along with this crap and so we finally got to meet another grand daughter at 5 years of age last year and reunited with our grandson after a 5 year separation!
In mid 1994 we were a very close family. We would find excuses to get together as often as possible for a BBQ and a laugh. On December 19th 1994 I was informed that my husband Simon and I were Satanic Ritual Abusers who had not only abused our children but our grandchildren as well in satanic rituals.
About 6 weeks later our grand daughter was killed, (eldest son's child from marriage). They wouddn't even look at us at the funeral. They accused us of cursing her and killing her on top of it!
So why is this important to me I wonder? Over1000 families in Australia alone that have experienced this and this is only the tip of the iceberg!
And believe me Randy, they need help and support just as much as we did when it happened to us. I ahve not met one family yet where the accused parents have not had a breakdown, whose health has not been adversly affected,just as much as xjws who have lost their whole family by not agreeing with the WTS.
