Actually I am not ignorant Zep. I am more than well aware of how many there are waiting for help and I know that a lot of Afghani refugees have already come here legally.
It isn't just this load of 460 ..... it is the other 3-4 boats that are due to arive this coming week and the ones coming the following week ......
Somehow the message must get back to them that they will not be taken in if they come this way .....
Maybe we may have to do what Hong Kong ended up doing to boat people ..... they let them land, fed them a good meal and then took them to the airport, put them on a plane and sent them back without even hearing their story. They would turn around a boat load within 24 hours. The message got back and the boats stopped .....

New Zealand came to the defense of Australia when they said that Australia should not be the country bearing the brunt of the refugee problem, including what to do with this boat load of people.
They said that this is an international problem and it should be the international community who should be taking responsibility for helping them find refuge, not just one country.
I agree with this because Australia has done all it can this last 25 years in taking in wave after wave of boat people ...... we truly cannot handle them all ..... our population is small and so are our resources for supporting populated areas.
In the last few years we have supported people from Bosnai and Serbia and given them refuge at our expense, paying for their transport both ways and supporting them while they were here. We have done the same for East Timor .....
We already have a large contingent of Afghanistan refugees here who have waited their turn at the refugee camps and there are more who will come that way who are being processed right now ......
the boat people had enough money to live well until they were processed also ....
Sure, this has caused a ruccus, but it has also drawn the world's attention to the problem we are facing in handling these waved of boat people .....
Not only are they coming in from the west, but we get boatloads from the east almost every month too ..... The chinese have been coming in droves!
We are a truly multi-cultural country and despite those who would like a white australia - most of us don't. We enjoy the diversity and we have seen migrants blend in over the last 6o years or so.
The majority of us are 1st or 2nd generation Australians. I am a first generation as is my husband. We are the children of migrants.
My son married the daughter of an Italian migrant who was a refugee after WW2.
So let's get back to the real issue!
This load of boat people are not the only ones that have to be settled. There are already a couple of boatloads on Christmas Island waiting to be transported to Australia. And there are about 3-4 more boatloads about ready to land.
What do we do with them all ...... of should the international community take a little responsibility and take some of them too.

In this case the did Stephanus ..... seems that most of them are Christians who would be executed in Afghanistan. This is the saddest part of all .... it is people like this that Australia would have let in first legally!

These people were in refugee camps
they were already out of Afghanistan and safe ....
They had money, enough to try and jump the queue by coming here on a boat instead of going through normal channels.
If they had stayed put in Pakistan, they could have lived well on that money until our government had processed their applications and brought them here legally.
Others like them in these camps have been able to come in legally and we have taken them happily ....
So don't give me this crap you are shovelling ......
Another 1000 plus are already on boats on their way ......
They make the decision to use their money this way and put themselves and their families in danger rather than living comfortably with that money until they come here paid for by us.

I got hauled to the back room for helping people who needed material support ..... had a young single mother of 2 girls stay with us for a month while she got a government flat, and then helped organize furniture etc from St Vincent De Pauls and the Salvation Army welfare(Horror!!)) ....
We also helped a sister in the congregation who had 2 children and needed wood for her heater. The temperatures were below freezing every night and they had nothing to keep warm .... We spent a Saturday gathering wood for her from the forest instead of door knocking ..... (Horror!!!)
Another sister was very sick after having her baby .... she almost bled to death. Isobel and I went over there every day and helped her get her children to school, clean the house, look after the baby and get the evening meal ...... of couse, we didn't have time for door knocking for about a month .... (Horror!!!!)
To Isobel and me, that was living the Christian life.

The Government has taken this stand because the biggest problem we have here is detention centres that are already over-crowded with boat people ..... Until now we have let them come in but we just can't accommodate them all until they are processed.
The charge that this is being anti-Muslim doesn't hold either. This boatload aren't Muslims, they are Christians who are fleeing the Muslims anti-Christian regime in Afghanistan......
If they had stayed in Pakistan in the refugee camps they would have been processed there and would have had a good chance of getting into Oz legally.
The Government is willing to help anyone who needs medical attention etc on the boats .... but they simply don't want more boat people because we are being flooded with them. We understand that there are many more boats already on their way and others planning to come ...
What are we to do with them all?
IT is difficult to distinguish true refugees from queue jumpers until they have been properly processed. Already we have a whole lot of people who are being sent back because they aren't true refugees ... and we have to foot the bill of keeping them and paying to send them home also.
At least we asked the ship to pick them up ..... most of them don't get seen in time and there are a lot of these boats that have sunk killing 150 plus men, women and children each time.
Somewhere, somehow, we have to convince them to stay put and come through normal channels.
Sounds hard but what can we do??????

We had a formal BBQ e.g. meat cood on the BBQ but eaten around the table ..... And MrsLoss cooked the most beautiful sourdough bread I have ever tasted!!!!!!
It is really great to be able to put faces to names and I really look forward to meeting more of them next time I am down that way.
