They're really hurting when it comes to young people. I fed the speaker a couple weeks ago, and I asked about three baptized brothers who were doing quite well, but have fallen off from what I had heard. He confirmed what I pretty much already knew. Then he shook his head and said its like that with all the young brothers. They just don't reach out any more. I've said before on here, I've given talks in all kinds of halls, and the young people just don't seem motivated. All the dudes I came up with minus one and myself, have left. There's a side of me that really respects this younger generation. I feel like an idiot thinking back on all that nonsense I was doing. Running mics, stage, attendant, giving 45 minute talks as a MS, now 30 minute talks, maintenance work, field service, the checking acounts, didn't go to college, etc.. All this bull shyt and what do I have to show for it? Zilch, absolutely nothing. It's a religion of usery. I really tip my hat to these young folks today, particulary males. They've got more courage than I ever had.
As far as the internet is concerned, I laugh as a born in. If I wasn't born in, and a couple JWs just happened to come to my door. After accepting their literature and saying good bye, the first thing I'd do is hit the internet to see the pros and cons of being a JW. Or to see their history, their unadulterated history. Its almost guaranteed, anybody whose honest with themselves, and some smarts will not get involved with JWs after researching them.

Interesting article. Those soldiers experiences remind me somewhat of growing up as a JW, and being in school during holiday season. Very awkward. Pressured by the school and students to participate, but at the same time pressured by my own parents and this religion. I swear on this planet, there's no shortage of people who want to tell you what to do and how to think.
I don't agree with the WT's interpretation of Babylon the Great. However, articles like this make you wonder if the WT is onto something. How are you going to force soldiers to go listen to a Evangelical Christian rock band, and then punish them for not attending?

"High-Control Groups"
by Consfearacy inhttp://www.jwfacts.com/watchtower/similar-religions-to-jehovahs-witnesses.php .
"it is important to understand that in most bible-based cults, although the member is aggressively taught doctrine, it is not the doctrine that holds him in the group.
it is the sense that the group is god's true people, a feeling cultivated by techniques of mind control.

Holy smokes, Alice and Consfearacy on the same thread? LOL, this is what I love about this forum, you never know what to expect. Someone tell me so I don't have to go through every page on this thread as I hate looking at Rachel's cut and paste responses that rarely adress questions directed to her, but I have to know............ Did Alice have a conversation with Consfearacy LOL? Plenty of people talk to themselves, myself included. But talking to oneself on an internet message board is something I've never heard of.

One Reason Why I Speak About Racism
by snowbird inhttp://www.eric.ed.gov/ericwebportal/search/detailmini.jsp?_nfpb=true&_&ericextsearch_searchvalue_0=ed018874&ericextsearch_searchtype_0=no&accno=ed018874.
if anyone cares or dares to read this, this is how it was when i was 13 years of age.. the gap in funding for black and white kids' education is still stunning to me 46 years later, but it's there in black and white.. it's a testament to our determination and fortitude that we acquired an education at all.. this, in the richest country on the planet!.
for your edification and, hopefully, understanding.. syl.

Good point on names being a hindrance. I've been personally avoiding this thread like the plague. I said I wasn't getting into spats regarding racial or political matters any more on here. But one thing I wanted to mention. In this country, patriotic types are always so quick to puff out their chests and say "we're Americans! We're free! It's better here than anywhere else!, etc.." I can agree and understand those sentiments, however the people making those comments often don't take into account all of their fellow Americans. Many in this country grow up on 3rd base, and when they reach home plate, they believe they worked just as hard as the guy born on 1st base. Certain pockets of this country are so systematically behind other pockets of this country, that if there are not programs such as Affirmative action, those very people become in essence a welfare population. A burden. That's not to say I completely agree with Affirmative Action, because I don't. It is reverse discrimination, but it has a purpose.
When my dad was my age, the only jobs available to him were maitenance jobs. He couldn't go in the same church as white people despite having the same faith, which is partly why he was attracted to JWs. Some of the stories he's told me throughout the years at times had my jaw on the floor. Other times I felt a boiling rage that people could be so cruel to someone over skin tone. Whats interesting to me though, is his generation was treated better than the generation before his parents, and especially that of his grandparents. By the way my dad is a Veteran, and he got pooped on far worst being a black man than the white soldiers coming from Vietnam got treated. Now here I am today. I'm doing ok in life, but I know for a fact had I been born in Suburbia, in a middle class background, I'd be a lot farther than where I am. In my high school, they told us we can be carpenters, plumbers, electricians, construction workers, etc.. Thats what they wanted us to aspire towards. I can only imagine what they told my pop's generation. After I graduated I went to a tech school for a trade. The class was held in a this huge high school out in suburbia. I saw what those kids were learning there and I was amazed. Everything from their computers, to their curiculum was completely different and advanced than what I was exposed to. Now that I'm older and can look back, I say for a fact, I got systematically screwed. Not to mention being a friggin JW doesn't help much when it comes to higher education. You multiply my experiences with others in this country from working class and poverty backgrounds. Particulary minorities. Its more difficult for them to compete with those born on 3rd base and white.
For the record though, I'm not whining at all. I'm very proud of being born and raised in the city, with a working class background. Proud of my black skin, and proud of white people too. I just believe personally, to say you agree or disagree with affirmative action is too simplistic. There's too much history, particulary negative history regarding race and class in this country. To this day, there are still too many in powerful places looking to maintain certain status quos.

Something I Never Understood About Disfellowshipped Ones
by minimus ini never understood why df'd ones would treat other df'd ones like crap.

but many would "treat" other disfellowshipped just like the witnesses would.

Thats so comical. Does anybody on this forum have any stories of shunning DFd ones while they were on DFd status too? Its gotta be hilarious to see two DFd people in the grocery store at the opposing ends of an aisle. Probably like a game of blink, which one will go for the 2% milk first? Will they bump into each other? If they do, will they pardon themselves?

Roger Clemens being charged with perjury for lying to Congress. One of those GTFOH moments in life.
by miseryloveselders ini don't vote, i'll never vote.
some of that may be due to a jw upbringing, but i'm convinced a lot more its my upbringing in the city.
i hate politicians with a passion.

Just shows how deep the WT penetrates one's thinking. It is crazy though right LOL. I find it somewhat humorous.
