The Gentile Times Reconsidered
by Spade indisproving the date 1914 as a significant year in bible prophecy is of great importance to some (e.g.
carl o. jonsson).
along with the meticulous details of bible and secular chronology, broadening one's horizons when assessing exactly what this date represents when compared against the 6000 years of human history likewise has merit.

Can an Elder Decline to go to Elder's School?
by VM44 inthe watchtower's goal is to have every elder attend the elder's school.. in the united states the school has been held in patterson, new york, which involves traveling considerable distances for some in order to attend it.. can an elder decline to make the trip?.
what happens if he does decline?.
what makes the elder's school so imporant anyway?

We had a traveling heavyweight from HQ direct the school. Ours was a day and a half. That last day was rough. It was early enough in the morning when I arrived that it was still dark outside. By the time I left, it was dark again. I was going stir crazy towards the end.
As far as brothers not attending, nobody would have noticed. Thinking back, I'm not entirely sure every brother from my hall was there now that I'm thinking about it. It's not like you have to sign in or anything. They had attendants at the front door checking for your lapel card. If you didn't have it, I'm under the impression they wouldn't let you in. Or someone would have had to vouch for you if you didn't have it. When I got there on the first day, I hadn't pinned it to my jacket and it was in my pocket. So I opened up the door, and two brothers were the bouncers attendants, and I knew both of them. The one has a daughter that reminds me of Cheryl Burke from Dancing With the Stars. Gorgous little lady. He said, "hey Misery!, good to see you!" We did the man-hug thing, and then I proceeded to walk into the auditorium, but he stopped me like, "whoa, where's your badge Misery?" I replied, "my fault, its right here. I'll put it on in a second." Then he let me in. There's was so many brothers in this little Kingdom Hall that if I or someone else decided to blow it off, nobody would have noticed. 75-80% of the brothers in there, I didn't know. They came from all over, possibly neighboring States.

Does Jehovah hate beards?
by brotherunsure inhas the watchtower ever rationalized their obsession with depilation or claimed there was a biblical basis for banning beards, or is it simply because jehovah's corporation/faithful and discrete slave says so?.

I knew there would be a ton of comments on this thread. I'm so thankful for this forum. Today's WT had to have been the strangest one I can ever recall. Couple observations.
Songs of praise in a basement are what motivated Rusell to continue his search for God. Maybe I'm looking to hard into that little bit of history, but you mean to tell me Babylon the Great deserved some kudos just this one time? Russell enjoyed singing that came from the table of demons, and it encouraged him? Interesting.
The question involving us being in prison and whether or not we'd remember the lyrics to the songs was pure comedy. If I get sent to the bing for a several year bid, the last thing I want buzzing in my head is anything from that new song book. I kinda get the feeling the Black Guerilla Family or the Mexican Mafia would probably have a problem with me singing Be Glad You Nations With His People. They'd probably shank me with a knife made of melted down Jolly Ranchers. I can see it now, taking a shower, thinking I'm all alone in ad-seg, singing From Door to Door, and then being attacked by The Cell Block Booty Bandit. I'll really be singing to Jehovah then, hitting those high notes. Squeel like a pig, whinnnn whinnnn!!
Paragraphs 18-20 were pretty much an infomercial with a touch of S&M. Music is subjective, and everyone's taste's vary. So to read in paragraph 18 about beautiful orchestral and choral arrangements that make for enjoyable listening, but at the same time admonishing us to listen to the songs often in order to learn the lyrics seems like a mixed message. If its so beautiful, wouldn't the flock have it on repeat in their Ipods already? Ohhh thats right, how could I forget!!! Silly me!!! The new song book sucks!!! But no matter, so what if its recieving poor reviews by way of lack of listening, we'll just guilt trip the flock into listening to it!!
Today's WT was a fine example of whats wrong with organized religion and cults. The lesson I learned was you can't regiment faith.

I couldn't sleep, thats why I'm posting this late. I just took 7 benadryl, so hopefully in the next 15 minutes or so I'll get drowsy.
An elder can decline, or just not go depending on the circumstances. At the one I attended, it was at a local kindom hall. What happens is, your COBOE, formerly known as the PO, would give all the elders at that congregation a lapel card. At that point, you were free to do whatever with it. If you chose to attend, great, if you chose to not attend, nobody would notice anyway. I'm sure a few elders didn't bother going. This school was the first time I've ever attended one. So I was quite curious. I asked my father, who's been an elder since the elder arrangement was instituted, what these were like. His response was, "same ol crap." At that point, I had to attend, just to see what he meant.

The secret things men hate about being men
by FlyingHighNow inthese are hastily thought up facts and then some stereo-typical reasons, in response to sam's why men seldom get depressed thread.
feel free to add ones that have been missed.. men:.
have to shave everyday or they look like miami vice wannabe's.. have to register for the draft.. have to keep up that macho image for their buds.. have to pretend to love beer.. to them, size is an important issue.

I would add:
Lose hair every place you want it to grow and grow hair every place you don't want it to grow.
I've told people that the hair on my head is growing inwards now. Instead of it growing out of my head, its growing down into my nose and ears. Just the past few years I started having to cut hair in my ears.
One thing as a man that I cant stand, and I wonder if there's a female equivalent, is jock itch. There's nothing worse than jock itch, other than maybe herpes, or the claps, not that I know anything about either, but I've heard enough. A few years ago in the summer, I had cut my folks grass. It was hot as Dante's Inferno, and after it was said and done I was kinda tired as earlier in the day I had helped move someone. When I got home, I was tired enough where I didn't feel like taking a shower. So I layed around for a while, but my scrotum started itching. Being lazy, and feeling MacGyverish, I decided to rub my scrotum with some hand sanitizer. That may have been the worst mistake I've ever made closest to the mistake of getting baptized in this religion. I thought a hole was going to burn in my scrotum. I swear i thought my testicles would just fall and roll on the floor. Terrible, I'll never do that again. Nowadays I just go and get a shower.

What is it with all the men waking up but the wives stay in? Why is it the opposite for me?
by Cadellin inthis is something i've thought about for a while now.
it seems like the same story on this board over and over--the husband, who also might be an elder, ms, etc.--starts having doubts and researching, aka miseryloveselders and franklin massey and others.
he starts to smell the coffee and realizes that this organization isn't what it claims to be.

I tend to agree that men probably do see the doctrinal issues quicker than women.
I wonder if it can be compared to men recognizing the dishonesty of auto mechanics quicker than women?
I agree with the thoughts expressed in this thread about the generalizations of men and women are really outdated modes of thinking. Women aren't Lucille Ball stereotypes any longer. Those days are over. There's some dynamic women in this world today. When it comes to doctrinal issues though, women have always seemed to be on the ball. I'm thinking about women in my congregation as I'm typing this, and they're the ones who do the bulk of commenting, and field service. They're the ones who study, and prepare for meetings. Quite a few of them are single too, so it is a good question as to why men see through the bull shyt quicker than women. I've seen women come and go in this religion, most however due to them finding better relationships outside of the Kingdom Hall, as in boyfriends or husbands. That certainly would coincide with the emotional generalization. At the same time, who's to say that those same women didn't see through the doctrinal nonsense and had already made up their mind what they were going to do. It's not like they're around for me to ask them which came first, the potential husband, or the last generation adjustment? I don't know, good thread question though.
