Letter from mom... A memorial tract!
by Fleshybirdfodder ini'm now part of an elite club of memorial invitees.... my mother mailed each of her satanic children without any hope for the future a one page tract reminding us of this important date.
no accompanying letter, no "how are you?
" nothing but the rhetoric filled tract re-explaining how we can all benefit from this "important occasion".. my one sister was a pioneer and a missionary, my other sister was a pioneer.

I'm in Sac, but an old (47) lady. However, you might check out the local alt-weekly for fun things to do and places to meet young people: Sacramento News & Review: http://www.newsreview.com/sacramento/Home
Welcome to town! Things I love: Midtown, Monarchs, River Cats, Friday concerts in Chavez Park all summer, ice cream at Vic's in Land Park, seeing a good movie at the Tower and then grabbing a great dessert at the Tower Cafe (and speaking of desserts--check out Rick's Dessert Diner in Midtown).
You might like: True Love Coffeehouse, Old Ironsides, Marilyn's on K.

JWs and the weird way they say Happy Birthday
by reneeisorym inyou who don't know -- i'm daed but my mother still sends me very short e-mail about every two months.. this morning she sent me an email that said:.
25 today.
it would be sooooo wrong for someone to say -- "happy birthday" .. but its fine to mention that i am 25 today.

Happy birthday, Renee!
The world is better because you're in it. (And frankly, I think that's the message the JWs are trying to avoid sending to folks, so they ignore birthdays.)

Reparative therapy??
by Junction-Guy ini know this is a long shot, as the jw cult was always reluctant to allow their members to seek therapy outside of the religion.. .
for those that have been keeping up on my latest revelation, you know that i have been confused sexually.
what im wanting to know is if anyone here has been through gay reparative therapy, what were the benefits?

"Praying the gay away" didn't work for me. Frankly, all it did was increase the level of self-hate and the distance I felt from my Creator, thus reinforcing the sense of spiritual failure with which the JWs indoctrinated me.
If you're going to examine Christian responses to homosexuality, you might want to carefully consider other options. Soulforce, for one, is a group made up of Christian gays and lesbians (www.soulforce.org/). There's also: The Gay Christian Network: www.gaychristian.net/ and Truth Sets Free: www.truthsetsfree.net/.
At the very least, take a look at some critical information about "reparative therapy" (which has been thoroughly discredited by both the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association): Truth Wins Out www.truthwinsout.org/
If you're determined to attempt to change yourself, best to you. But please consider all the options.

Your opinion on my really important question, please.
by jambon1 indoes a jw upbringing simply confuse a child or is it really damaging?.
i have no doubt that a jw child is, at least, confused with life.
in my own case my wife brings up my 2 children (aged 5 & 2) as jw`s.

Based on my experience (raised in "da Troof," df'd father when I was 8, never dunked, occasionally shunned by ninja-JWs):
First, yes, kids are amazingly resilient. All props to my dad for staying with the family, putting up with my mother's JW crap, and offering an alternative. Something as simple as saying, "Reasonable people disagree about that" when a particularly whacko doctrine was under discussion opened up a lot of doors and confirmed my perception that there was something not quite right about the goings-on at the Kingdom Hall. It gave me "permission," if you will, to investigate rather than simply swallow undigested all they spewed from the podium.
On the other hand, since he didn't step in to keep us from constant exposure to the JW mindset, I internalized a whole lot of bunk. In my case, it was especially damaging--the JW attitude toward women is particularly disagreeable and guaranteed to cause self-esteem problems for a girl.
Furthermore, as a person who is spiritually inclined, the demanding, "heavy yoke" the JWs lay on you caused a lot of spiritual harm that's taken me a long time to unravel and heal.
But the best thing I could suggest is what my dad did--stay in your kids' lives, love & accept them, and offer them an alternative.
Warm thoughts to you and your kids.

Would Blondie or Mary ever make it as Elders in your old Congregation?
by RULES & REGULATIONS inwe know the wts will never except woman as elders.in the last year as a member of jwd,i have learned more from blondie and mary than any elder in my congregation.all the elders in my congregation look like they go thru the motions.they are more like policy enforcers than teachers.. do you think that by excepting woman, some men would be embarassed to how little they know?
does the wts know some woman would better teachers?
is it more like a men's club?

If Blondie, Mary, Scully, Leolia (sorry for the misspelling), Lady Lee and Mulan were the elders in my old congo, I'd still be a JW.
But the JWs would be a much more interesting and worthy organization!

Oh, geez, here we go again! Obviously, some of the "flock" have actually been treating their children like, well, their children. Got to put a stop to that right now, don't they.
I can't wait for the fallout.

If it wasn't for the "Truth".......

My mother's favorite:
"If it wasn't for the Truth, I wouldn't be able to bear the pain of losing my family."
Of course, if it wasn't for "the Truth," she never would have abandoned her family (my brothers have been distanced because they never baptized and married non-JWs; I've been rejected because I'm gay).
Try and get 'em to see the logic of that.
