This just keeps getting more outrageously absurd. What's even worse is that people like my mother will eat it up.

"It's Like Scientology for Black People"
by SixofNine inhah!
samantha bee on the daily show just recommended that tiger woods become a jehovah's witness (they were playing off brit humes suggestion that tiger needed to become a christian to achieve redemption for his infidelity); "serena williams, prince, ... it's like scientology for black people".. .
the clip should be online soon @ the daily show site..

The whole thing was a hoot, but I'm really impressed by Samantha Bee's take on the JWs! The 144,000 saved for "top contributors"! Hah! Obviously gets that its a sales program!

For those who researched 607...
by AwSnap indid you use wt dates as well as things found from a secular perspective?
if a witness was researching the 607 dates strictly from watchtower info, would it still become clear they are wrong?
or does the wtbs *make* the dates add up...?

Medical treatments you (or others) put off for the "Noo Sistum"
by darthfader inon another thread i stated that i didnt get braces for my teeth as a child as my parents believed that the ns would be here soon.
i am very glad that i did it as an adult.

Put me on the list of people who should have had braces as a kid, but Armageddon was coming soon, so it would be a waste of money. I'm almost 50 now, and paying out of pocket for orthodontic work because the misalignment of my teeth caused excruciating TMJS, which eventually led to arthritis in my jaw.
Wish I could bill the Society for it.

Typical JW Response
by Magwitch inmy 76 year old mother and her 94 year old mother (my grandmother) are still regular pioneering.
if anyone should understand helping the less fortunate it should be these life time pioneers.
however, this is a conversation i had with my them yesterday.... me: mom, the girls (my 2 teenage daughters) and i have volunteered to serve breakfast and lunch at the soup kitchen new year's eve.

Similar story: My mom and I drove past a church group providing sandwiches and milk to the homeless outside the mission, and she said "Well, they won't be hungry for a few hours, but they'll still die at Armageddon."
Heartless. This religion teaches them to be heartless, then rewards them for it.

Christmas & JW objection
by Luo bou to injw's reject christmas because of its pagan origins.
it's not what it meant to people in the distant past that matters but what it means to us living today.
does anyone today visit a person's house see a christmas tree and think oooh he must be a pagan.

Uh, lgadsden...suddenly you're changing the subject. Is that because Mrs. Jones made a point you can't counter from the Bible?

I overheard a nauseating conversation . . .
by 144001 ini was in the produce section of a local market, when i happened to overhear the following comment: "we celebrate christ's birth every day of the year, not just on christmas!
" i turned and knew the nature of the source of the comment immediately, judging by the polyester pantsuit and delusional "deer in headlights" look on her face.
her companion replied, "but i like celebrating christmas and don't see anything wrong with it.

Oh, yeah.
WTWizard:
They can say that all they want about children getting gifts all year. And it is bulls***. Most witless children rarely get any gifts from their parents.
We were always instructed to tell people that we got gifts all through the year, but it was a load of crap. We usually got some presents from our (non-JW) relatives either right before or right after Christmas, but our toys were usually hand-me-downs from older JW kids (who'd managed to wreck 'em already). "Gifts" from our parents were usually new clothes for assemblies! Oh, gee, just what I wanted: more unfashionable clothing.
*** g93 11/22 p. 8 "We Are Not Deprived!" ***As a youth I have never felt bitter about missing the celebrations of worldly holidays. I have not been told by my parents that ‘you can’t do this or that because you’re one of Jehovah’s Witnesses,’ but I have been familiarized with the Bible and Jehovah’s views on these holidays. As for gifts, in our house, gift-giving is all year long."—Ryan, age 17.
Yeah, I don't believe for a minute that he wasn't "told" that by his parents. Mine certainly told me that we couldn't do stuff because we were JWs. Yes, they usually offered an explanation if they had time, but mostly it was just "No, we can't. We're in the Truth. That's what worldly people do."

I was just talking about this with my spouse, because she can't figure out how I do it. YEARS of experience.
Women in just-barely-fashionable attire that's a tad too long at the knee, but not so long as to be "granny-style." Generally, great care with their hairstyle, but not much make-up and only a little jewelry. Clothes usually are more JC Penney than Wal-Mart, but not always. I've always wondered at why so many JW women make a bee-line for pastels and floral prints (about the only ones with any real color sense seem to be the sisters of color--Latina and African American sisters always seem to be a little better-dressed, or maybe they don't stand out as so different from "normal" to me because of my own cultural biases). JW women also have longer hair (again, IN GENERAL) than women in their age group do in the "real" world.
Men's suits are usually pretty light-weight and plain (also on the cheap side), gray, brown or navy. (Don't see much black ... I wonder why?) Men's shoes tend to be a little scuffed (not replaced regularly). Only short-sleeved dress shirts you see are on the young boys (once you reach a "position of responsibility," you're wearing a jacket!).
I've started to notice that there's less carrying of briefcases and bookbags, and a move to portfolios. I suspect that's because they're pushing light-weight books and magazines (the new paperbacks are much lighter than the old hardcovers). One effect of this is to make JWs stand out less--clunky bookbags were a dead giveaway.
But the dead giveaway? A whole group of people dressed for business standing on a streetcorner talking to each other while holding up WATCHTOWER and AWAKE! magazines. Happens daily in downtown Sacramento, and I always get steamed. My grandmother and aunt used to take me to do streetwork with them, and we actually worked at it--starting conversations instead of just taking up space! I can't believe they get to count time for just standing around! (And this is the point at which my spouse always laughs at me, getting pissed because they're not "doing it right" even though it's a crock from beginning to end.)
