Forum updates, issues and performance
by Simon infirst of all, thank you all for your patience while i made a few tweaks to the site.. i ended up actually going down a bit of a rabbit hole of updating one thing which required another thing be updated first and so on ... before i knew it i'd updated the framework platform and most of the sub-components used and then got carried away trying to do some optimizations as well.
all worthwhile though and a little overdue.. anyway, i broke a few thing along the way but i also fixed a few things too ... erm, unfortunately they didn't always quite match up so there are still a few things outstanding that i need to fix and am working on.. but, i'm hoping that dispite the short-term pain the site should now load and run just a little bit faster for you.
well, that's the intention - i'd be interested to hear how you find it.

Jehovah's Witnesses are NOT false prophets
by SloppyJoe intonight on the service meeting we discussed why jws are not false prophets.
of the ten minute part two were spent discussing that jws just had wrong expectations and only very minor changes over the years although nothing specific was mentioned.
the other eight focused on the core bible truths that have remained the same over the years.

Is (a possible) revised NWT prompted by lapsing copyright?
by slimboyfat inin the united states i gather that copyright lasts for the lifetime of the author plus 70 years.
if copyright only lasts for 70 years from publication of anonymous works, then copyright for the nwt of the christian greek scriptures would be due to run out in a few years.
watchtower leaders probably don't like the idea of others being able to publish hard copies or circulate the nwt in ebook format.

Regarding the ownership and duration for the copyright, "work for hire" is an important distinction. Since the translators are known to have been Bethelites, if the translation was part of their assigned duties for the Society (and that fact was demonstrated to the satisfaction of a court), then there is a chance that the Society would be treated as the collective author. Though either way, the copyright has not expired, so that probably makes little difference at this point.
If the alternate theory is true, that the Society discontinued the old NWT and is delaying the next release to build up anticipation and other "buzz" for the new edition, it seems to be working. It has been quite a popular topic here!

Of course not! A parent's love lasts for a lifetime, the money would soon be gone.

95% are stored in JW attics,under beds..ect..ect..
So true! I think the other 5% are still in the trunk of my ex-wife's car. The weight helps add winter traction, so they do serve some purpose.
These magazines are like junk mail
By that logic, the weekly grocery ads easily beat them. And somebody actually looks at those. Maybe the WT should print coupons in their rags.

NEW BIBLE
by The Searcher inthe following is part of an email from a retired district overseer in the states.
(source private).
"the new bible will be released at the agm and i understand only two versions will be printed from now on.

It will be in “modern” English as many young people do not understand many of the words used in the current edition.
Perhaps if the children were encouraged to study hard, making the most of their education so they could be admitted to a good university, then they wouldn't need to print the "NWT for the Marginally Literate."

Former Catholics I would like your opinion?
by Truth seeker 674 ini've got a job interview next tuesday at a catholic hospital.
i have got more than one college degree as well as years of realitive experiance for this position and i am well qualified.
but the "sister" who called me for the interview wants me to bring my high school dipmola all i have is the legal ged which was enough to get me started on my career many years ago.

The college degrees are more relevant. Just show them the GED, and answer any questions honestly--but without using phrases like "bat-shit crazy". Getting caught in a lie about GED vs. High School graduation, or showing what could be seen as a caustic personality will hurt you in any interview, but especially so in a hospital where lives are literally at risk and clients are emotionally vulnerable.

Becoming "unevenly yoked" ?
by Blttex ini haven't been to a meeting in about a year, made up my mind about six months ago that jw's are just another religion and that its not for me.
started dating a "worldly" girl 10 months ago and got engaged this past weekend.
i'm having a hard time deciding who to invite to the wedding.

Please be sure you are truly and permanently OUT of the organization, for your future wife's sake as well as your own, not to mention any children you may eventually bring into the world. Right now you are on an equal footing; going back "for your parents' sake" or to be on good terms with your JW friends is how you become "unevenly yoked". That would be difficult for everybody involved.

Can you take someone with you in Judicial Committee?
by zound ini've heard of a couple of cases of a person being present (maybe wife, or friend) for support at judicial committees - is this commonly accepted by the elder committee or is it just a rarity?.
-
GLTirebiter
it is best to have her believing husband present for the hearing.
But an unbelieving spouse? Sorry, that's verboten!
