Avoiding a shipwreck is the responsibility of the captain, first mate, navigator and other officers in charge of the vessel, not the passengers. If the Watchtower Society is worried about having too many spiritual Exxon Valdez incidents they should be addressing their leaders, not the rank and file.

Why Some Suffer Spiritual Shipwreck
by mankkeli inthis was taken from the 1999 wt, 7/15.. .
when paul warned of experiencing shipwreck, he had in mind some who had thrust aside their good conscience and had lost their faith.
(1 timothy 1:19) among them were hymenaeus and alexander who fell into apostasy, deviating from the truth and speaking abusively.

What would you do if your JW spouse did...?
by garyneal inokay, i don't mean to rant but i am not sure where to turn.
the issues that i am having with my wife are not related to her being a jw but it does make me think of other situations where the religion is credited for the jw spouse's exceptional behavior (even when it has nothing to do with the religion).. my wife has her heart set on going to disney this year, but she has no real plan on saving the money to go.
in addition to this, she needs have some money to replace her lost income over the summer when she takes her internship to get her teacher's license.

I've been there too. I wish I had better advice than this: don't do what I did, which was basically nothing (except arguing about it) and waiting for our "bad luck" to turn around. It never did, of course--there's always another car problem, plumbing back-up, or medical bill on the way. Plan and agree on a realistic budget, including rainy day savings for the inevitable surprises. If you can't find common ground, suggest a joint meeting with a legitimate credit counselor (check them out with the BBB etc. before making an appointment, to weed out the charlatans).
we just paid off a credit card debt of $17,000 last year. I had to take out $4,000 of my 401k to do it. Not even a year later she is running it up again.
She actually carries on like she is wholly entitled to all of these things.
Adding to diamonddiz's suggestion about a line of credit to pay off the debt: if you do that, GET RID OF THE CREDIT CARDS! Otherwise you will soon find you're paying on the credit line and a new batch of credit card debt. You've already been down that path once, using retirement savings to pay off consumer debt. There needs to be a day of reckoning, an intervention, so the same thing doesn't happen again.
Good luck, Gary. I hope you can work this out as partners.

Difference between Religious people and Cult members ?
by stuckinamovement inin the words of rabbi shmuley........ "people who are in a relationship with g-d are humble and do their utmost to refrain from judging others.
their proximity to a perfect being reminds them of their own fallibility.
their experience of g-d's compassion leads them to be merciful and loving.

I like the last line of his article:
"All should be judged on their merits as people and politicians, whatever their faith and whatever their beliefs."
Words we all should take to heart!

Any Texas Lawyers in the House (or anyone else)? Need advice
by TheClarinetist ini'm too stressed out right now to write this as anything more than what basically amounts to a series of bulletin points, but here goes anyway.. girlfriend burned down kitchen.. landlord wants money for repairs (obviously, no issue there) by december 5th.. landlord is attempting to apply security deposit to repairs in order to force us to pay all repair money within the next 10 days (over $1600) per the lease.
is that legal without our permission?
also, can she make us pay before she's paid anything?.

it is probaby the standard TAA lease.
And that "probably" is the problem. This is not a time to be making assumptions.

You should consult a lawyer with experience in landlord-tenant disputes. Details matter, including the exact wording of the lease, all the laws applying to rental property where you live, details about the fire and how it happened, insurance coverage, etc. You need more detailed advice than anyone could give you on this message board.

One teacher did report this and is suing for wrongful termination. This is from KKTV news coverage:
Two Hilltop Baptist Church employees say they were fired for following the law and telling authorities about a fellow teacher's sexual relationship with a student. Now, court documents show they're suing for wrongful termination.
According to the document obtained Friday by KKTV 11 News, Laurie and Dustin Sutton learned about the relationship between teacher Terah Rawlings and the 15-year-old student. Laurie was a math teacher at the time and Dustin was a volunteer coach.
They took the information about Rawlings to Wayne Knight, who was Hilltop's Pastor and Superintendent in addition to being Rawlings' uncle. Next, they took the information to the authorities.
In January, the court documents say, the Suttons were fired by the school's, Principal Jan Ocvirk.
The school is now closed, citing low enrollment. Cause and effect, perhaps?

Returning to God - For those with minds of Reason
by mankkeli inthis was taken from a watchtower study article and without doubt, i am definitely sure it will be beneficial for the majority here: now take your spoon and approach the table, the food is ready.. .
returning to god.
13 those who see themselves in the position of the prodigal son, however, need not remain in this wretched state.

fearing that they might not be accepted in a loving manner, they may dread the thought of having to face persons who have continued to serve Jehovah faithfully.
Yes, being told that you should arrive at the last minute--sit in the back row with the other pariahs--not speak to the rest of the con gregation --then leave immediately after the final bar of the closing song would certainlyhave that effect!
Compare this to the return of the prodigal son. Where is the embrace and kiss? Why not dress the returning son in the finest robe, placing a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet? Is that preparing the fatted calf and and having a joyous feast? Are you showing joy, forgiveness and love? Or is it a display of power, punishment and spite?
This sort of treatment reminds me of the response of the other jealous son, not the father's loving celebration and rejoicing "because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found."

Stephen Hawkings and Richard Dawkins attend the Jehovah's witnesses two-day assembly program at London Edgware assembly hall

http://www.bbc.co.uk/search/news/stephen_hawking ... nope, nothing about a JW convention.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/search/news/richard_dawkins ... nope, nothing there either.
As I write this, the present BBC News headline page is #15884523, one digit diffferent from Mankelli's # 15834523. That is either an extraordinary cooincidence or symptomatic of a Bogus Statement.

Thankful for finding this site & all of you!!!
by discreetslave inat this time last year i was in another deep depression feeling alone & hopeless despite being surrounded by people who said they cared and belonging to a religion that said it could offer mankind the only real hope in life.
it's ironic that i now have more online friends than physical friendships, am no longer a part of that religion & i feel happier than i have in many years.
i'm thankful to have found this website & feeling validated.
