I did notice something in this article. It refers to Russell as "the first leader," not "the first president." Russell was secretary-treasurer in the early days; he did the writing and publishing.
The president of the organization before it became legally incorporated was William Conley. He provided the majority of the start-up capital, but stayed with Zion's Watchtower for only a few years. Today's WTBTS does not say much about the first president; he was their first notable apostate!
i have been surprised recently to see so much support by ex-jws for the watchtower's refusal to fight and kill.
in my opinion it is a vice masquerading as a virtue.
of course war should always be a last resort but there are occasions that it has to be done.

Though gloating over his death is not justified, "Is as bad as him" is hyperbole.
Bin Laden's death was a appropriate use of military force to abate evil. A moral choice is a reasoned response, neither giving in to blood lust nor insisting on a do-nothing stance.

I think existing laws re. monopolies, collusion, restraint of trade, etc. should be applied (and updated, if necessary) to deal with the issues net neutrality was supposed to address. It's really an anti-trust issue, not a telecommunications matter.

I can't help wondering if Cease-and-Desist orders and harassment laws are part of the motivation. The official policy is written to defend WTBTS from legal action. But do feel free to drop in and chat with them if you happen to be out in their neighborhood during service (nudge nudge, wink wink!)
i'm just curious to get people's views on this.. the bible students seem to start of as quite a liberal group under charles taze russell, albeit he had some whacky teachings going on.

I'd say it was when Rutherford began demanding the members go door to door with his tracts and records. Early to mid 1920s, I think. I'd push the date back to the demands for WWI "neutrality" (draft resistance), if he had not gone to jail over it himself. That is one of the times he showed some integrity.
