Thanks, everyone else, for your helpful thoughts.
i have a family member coming over tomorrow to discuss this.
it was actually brought up a long time ago, but i forgot about it.
he told me 2 days ago that he found some information that he'd researched.

Thank you. I thought I made it quite clear as to what I was commenting on to him. Were there any examples of congregation leaders making false rules for their congregations, even if they were appointed by god?
Thanks for the jwfacts.com quotes. it IS a matter of whether the Holy Spirit is guiding the GB....I dont necessarily need to change his mind. I just want to be able to have a couple good responses.

....what about David? Didnt he lead a ton of men into war, putting his lady friend's husband at the frontlines so he'd die? Did David do this in the name of God?

My point to him was this: I know the men whom God appointed in Bible times were imperfect and made mistakes (as individuals who made mistakes in their conduct & daily lives), but did they ever make a ruling "in the name of god" and then realize it was a mistake?
My family member sounded as though he has found some examples. Can anyone give me a heads-up on this? What can I expect to hear? Can anyone recommend a thread that has to do with this?
Thanks in advance

lol.. i've heard worse!.
sylvia.
I wonder what will be done if they find out it was a black person who made the announcement as a joke. Whomever made the announcement...the motives need to be found out. Hopefully, it was just a dumb joke. Even if it was a prank, I feel bad for anybody who is embarrassed or put on the spot for no good reason
i have been dating a jw for 2 years now and everything has been going great other than the fact that she is in a cult.
she at first tried to convince me to join but she quickly realized i wasnt believer.
in this age of information i just dont see how so many people can fall victim to this religion.
....as an illustration: my pioneer (somebody who does the 'door-to-door' work for a bazillion hours every month) sibling came over to my home one night. We had some wine. My sibling had more than usual. I thought we had a wonderful time....weeks later, I found out that I was apparently the one to blame for that since my sibling would *never* drink too much with other 'faithful friends'..... Ummmm
So basically, I was blamed because I'm one of Satan's peeps. Basically, you are too at this point. In the future, if they get in trouble for the party you attended, they will blame you & your unbaptized honey.

I'll read this whole thread tomorrow, but I just came across your comment:
FYI: I recently was invited to my first party with some members of her hall. I will tell you that the younger JW crowd I met are much less conservative than I thought they would be...lol They a even had drinking game at their party.
All I can say is: PLEASE REALIZE THAT THEY ARE JUST TRYING TO MAKE YOU THINK THEY ARE COOL AND ACCEPTING. ITS THEIR WAY OF GETTING YOU IN.
No joke. They will act "wild" with fellow jw's or potential jw's (especially)....but if you become one of them & act the way they did in front of you in front of them in front of 'worldly' people.... you will be excommunicated. Sound confusing? Yep, it sure is.
I have some very important people still involved in the jw's. my advice is *not* to give up yet. Read some books such as Combatting Cult Mind Control. If nothing else, just read that book....and do not tell her you are doing so. YET.
what a fantastic book!
i really enjoyed it.
i loved the way don cameron refused to get bogged down with arguing for an alternative scriptural interpretation to the witnesses.
I'm just going to bring this BTTT. I skimmed through it for the past couple of days, and realized that we actually have the Proclaimers book here at home (a LOT of the references are from that). I plan on going back through the book....its really kickass
i was talking to a jw friend about what it was that ct russell was doing prior to 1914 that made him acceptable to jesus, over everyone else.. i mentioned the pyramids, celebration of "pagan" holidays, stealing of thoughts from other religious people, the "odd" lifestyle of russell, etc.
and i asked, "so, what was it that made ct russell more acceptable to god than anyone else at that time?".
the answer:.
You know, I just finished the book CAPTIVES of a CONCEPT....and I thought the exact same thing today. I was trying to figure out how to ask a jw that, and now I have the answer. UGH!
