Here's the JW answer to it all......

I was talking to a JW friend about what it was that CT Russell was doing prior to 1914 that made him acceptable to Jesus, over everyone else.

I mentioned the pyramids, celebration of "pagan" holidays, stealing of thoughts from other religious people, the "odd" lifestyle of Russell, etc. And I asked, "So, what was it that made CT Russell more acceptable to God than anyone else at that time?"

    The answer:

Jesus could see into the future and could tell that they were the only ones searching and would eventually come to the correct teachings on things.

WTF? NO ONE ELSE WAS SEARCHING? What about all the people that CT stole ideas from??? Including his own wife????

You just can't reason with these people at all.

You know, I just finished the book CAPTIVES of a CONCEPT....and I thought the exact same thing today. I was trying to figure out how to ask a jw that, and now I have the answer. UGH!

The answers they give are so.....like nailing jello to the wall.

You can't prove anything. There's nothing tangible to grasp onto.

Give me the Red Sea parting!! Give me the sun standing still! For god's sake, give me something!!

    (of the still searching class....)

It is so frustrating trying to talk to them. It is so like you said trying to nail jello to the wall.

But I did like your points. Thanks for the post. LITS

I used to make those same JW statements. Then something clicked in my head. I suddenly realised that if I was raised a Seventh Day Adventist I could use exactly the same reasoning. Or any other religion for that matter. Regardless of how evil or illogical the past, a religious leader just has to say that it was God's plan because today our religion is the only one with the truth.

I mentioned that very point in my judicial meeting, saying that I could be sitting before a panel of SDA leaders and they would be giving me the exact same responses. The elders just sat there with a "whatever" look on the faces and did not understand (or didn't want to understand) the point I was making.

You're absolutely right. The typical JW response is that, well, Russell may have been wrong about a lotta stuff, but his ATTITUDE was right. In other words, there was NOBODY else at the time who was sincerely searching for truth with an open mind and the humility to admit they may have been wrong about a few things. Well, if that's the case, contrast Russell's attitude with that of current WT leadership. Do these men demonstrate a humble attitude, one with an open mind and the humility to admit they may be wrong about a few things? I think the inordinate amount of self-referential "Faithful and Discreet Slave" quotes proves otherwise.

It all goes back to the myth of appointment......

Russell is too easy to dismiss......next time harp on Rutherford, whom today's modern interpretations are mostly founded.

JehSheep..... You mean 'Millions Now Living MAY Never Die'..... (Giggles)

..... Actually Palm, JehSheep has gotta a great 'in'..... that article is still in the future so you can introduce this 'typo' by saying you have been reading a copy of "Millions" from GoogleBooks and citing it's current relevancy in the March 2010 WT-SE.

Ask them if they wanna get some extra FS points by studying it with you!

Jesus could see into the future and could tell that they were the only ones searching and would eventually come to the correct teachings on things.

Weren't the corrections of teachings because of "new light" given to the FDS? That means Jesus could just pick any lunatic, "direct the light" towards him (think of a giant mirror here), and presto, the correct teachings arrive.

So your question is still up: "what was it that made CT Russell more acceptable to God than anyone else at that time?" Why was he the chosen lunatic out of the other hundreds of millions on the planet?
