Yeah... I think we have a winner. After a quick Google, I definitely recognize the book he was trying to give us as their holy book. On that note... Celibacy, Vegetarianism, and Abstinence from Drugs and Alcohol... Were they EVER talking to the wrong person. LoL

Interesting Experience...
by TheClarinetist inso my girlfriend and i were walking to the post office and this really quiet guy comes up and comments that he likes my shirt (black shirt that says "lucifer" in white text).
he then goes on to say that he's a monk and wants us to have this "free" book on meditation.
my girlfriend is big into meditation, so she's like "okay" and starts looking at it, and then he tells us that he can't give it to us unless we make a donation so that they can pay to print another book.

Of course, I don't have any money for food or rent, much less for a book, so we have to turn him down. Sound familiar?
Anyway, this was a new one for me. I've never been proselytized to by someone like that, especially someone not Christian. Anyone else have any similar experiences, or maybe know what group this guy was with? It was really weirded me out. LoL.

Yoga......JW view
by confuzzled777 ini needed a place to come vent.
i went to a yoga class last sunday and loved it!!
i am going again tonight with my hubby.

This appears to disagree with you on the subject. Of course, I think the JWs take it much more seriously than the majority of American practitioners, but there is definitely a spiritual element involved with meditation and such.
EDIT: Should probably mention that I think the whole anti-yoga/meditation/hypnosis/anything else stance the JWs take is silly. Have fun at Yoga. ^_^ I wish I could do it, but I am too busy with school.

Say Pledge of Allegiance or Go To Jail
by cameo-d ina lawyer was cited for criminal contempt of court because he did not say the pledge of allegiance.
he stood up but was silent.
apparently he had done this before and the judge was put out with him.
-
TheClarinetist
The pledge is one of the only old hangups I have leftover from The Lieā¢. At this point I would probably pick the go to jail option as well. LoL
The article doesn't say anything about WHY he refuses, interestingly enough.

Do JW elders perform exorcisms?
by QuestioningEverything inwhat if a person is thought to be possessed and nothing suspicious is found in their home, ie books, yard sale stuff, smurfs, etc..., will the elders perform an exorcism?
have any of you ever heard of a person getting exorcised?.
-
TheClarinetist
Speaking on behalf of my friend... He personally knows a JW girl with mental issues who her parents had the elders attempt to exorcise... Of course, that could just be that particular body of elders. <_<

this t-shirt design makes me happy on so many levels... unfortunately, the only print run of it is sold out so i'm doomed never to get it.

What is your favourite boardgame?
by Caedes ini have recently been playing a number of interesting boardgames, most often agricola although le havre, pandemic, ticket to ride, carcassonne and space hulk have been popular too.. there are some very interesting card games out as well such as dominion and race for the galaxy.. i am looking forward to playing the great fire of london and merchants & marauders whenever i can get hold of them.. i particularly like agricola because it isn't very confrontational as a game, obviously there is a winner but you can have fun playing even if you come last.
some games you only win by destroying the other players ability to do anything interesting when playing the game, risk or monopoly for example.
anybody else have any particular favourite boardgame?
-
TheClarinetist
Hmmm... Monopoly. It takes forever, but when you start bidding wars, back room deals, etc (which I didn't know were allowed in the rules until like a year ago), it can be a lot of fun. Usually play with a time limit, though, to keep it manageable.

I Believe Full Disclosure Is Moving Forward
by metatron inanyone who deeply believes in a "free press" is very naive in my opinion.
for example, consider how stories about scandal suddenly appear out of nowhere after candidates actually start running.
i am also aware of how surprizing revelations appear in european newspapers about figures in the us - while little or nothing is reported in the american press.

Assuming that life is possible on other worlds, and that sentient life could evolve (2 rather large suppositions), what are the odds that the timing of that other world's evolution closely matches our own?
The first supposition is probably more likely than most people give credit for just because of the number of planets and stars in the Universe... I think probably a bigger problem is that aliens, if they are visiting us currently, would most likely have to have left their home planet long before we would have evolved or, alternatively, have appeared to evolved (the second assuming they had developed faster than light travel)...
And the "life on mars" stories refer to organic compounds, not sentient complex life. If you have other, more recent sources (from the mainstream media), please give links.
EDIT: @leavingwt Of course... especially depending on how you define primate. As far as alternative alien possibilities, I'm slightly attached to the intelligent amorphous blob, myself... Uses tools by extending itself around the item... How would we talk to it, though?

UFO is a misnomer. If there is a great Government conspiracy to hide aliens, then by definition there are no UFOs. Get your facts straight.

Can you accept hard to swallow reality?
by AK - Jeff infor instance: in the matter of 'shunning' - are individual jehovah's witnesses evil?.
due to our previous 'training' it is still difficult for many of us to accept that jehovah's witnesses are actually evil.
i don't mean the organization - an 'organization' is just a term to describe people who unite for a common goal or purpose.
-
TheClarinetist
Oooh... Lets not get on to 12-step programs. >_<
I don't think that JWs are evil... It's the "new personality" that is evil. I consider the self and brainwashed self to be two (relatively) distinct entities... though I'm not sure how accurate that is, and it's liable to change in the future.
