bytheirworks: Religion is in many cases for-profit industry. It's quite disgusting, really. And "taxing the first amendment" isn't a fair representation of what Gopher said.
Reminds me of this song...

Latest Awake Cover Story - Is Pornography Toxic
by ShirleyW insaw two separate kiosk setups today that had the awake displayed with the cover story being "pornography, is it toxic or .
.
(the other word i can't remember).. i was in a hurry today so really didn't have time to stop and talk and ask the brother exactly how much research did the society do for this article, to which he would probably say true chrtistians don't watch porn, to which i would've asked then since you jws claim you don't lie then someone must've watched some porn films so they know what they're talking about and have their facts straight, or is the article just speculation..

ROFL. Excellent.
Read that article out loud with a couple of friends. Many laughs were had. They really laid on the shame and guilt.

I would shun my own children to give THEM a million dollars, but only after discussing it with my [I guess by then] wife and child. Never, ever for my own gain.

QC: A couple of things....
First, in regards to abiogenisis. There are two distinct types of abiogenisis, one of which is discredited, and the other of which is [at least currently] a legitimate field of study. See http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Abiogenesis . I'm surprised no one mentioned the first, because that's the first thing I thought when I read that definition. Also, dictionary.com is a very, very weak source for a scientific discussion... just saying.
As far as the way the Earth seems designed to support life: that is completely irrelevant. The Earth will seemingly designed to support life whether we evolved or were created. If it weren't compatible with life, we wouldn't have evolved on it, or God wouldn't have put us here, respectively.
Finally, in regards to your thesis about the Cambrian explosion being evidence against evolution: So what if it is? If complex life suddenly appeared at the Cambrian explosion, it would not invalidate the large amount of evidence for evolution that has occurred since then. It would be a mystery that we would have to explain, and it would be quite possible that the answer was "and God/some aliens/something dropped off a bunch of animals that then evolved into us". Science has to take into account all of the evidence around us, and a new theory would have to be made which would take into account both the myriad transitional fossils that happened later in addition to the sudden appearance in the Cambrian. As it is, though, it looks like you got your ass handed to you already as far as your argument for that is concerned.

I'm a skeptic myself, but every pagan I've ever met has told me to stay away from those things, that they're dangerous. And apparently, whatever you do, don't burn it; it allows whatever was controlling it into our world.

Obamacare is going to save my life, and for that I will always be thankful to Obama... if it gets repealed in the next year, chances are I won't get to be angry because I'll [barring some miracle] be dead. (My backup plan as of right now is to beg Oprah for money) So there's that. It's a bulky, terrible piece of legislation, but it is the best that he could get passed, and I knew a lot of people who would be alive today if it had been passed 10-20 years ago. The United States healthcare system is broken and it has been for a long time, the real issue with Obamacare is we need an overhaul, not a bandaid.
Obama isn't a terrible president; he's just as bad as all of the other presidents. The indefinite detention bill, for example, is a nightmare, but would've been passed by Bush or pretty much any previous president. The situation with Edward Snowden was badly handled. The Benghazi scandal... appears to be a hoax, actually. A lot of media circus with little to no substance.
The biggest thing I've noticed in the last couple of years is Obama's hands being tied by a Republican-controlled congress. Frankly, I've been shocked and appalled by their willingness to put American lives (both literal and financial) in harms way to obtain their political goals.
So for me it's a mixed bag. I'm impressed by his idealism, but not by some of the specifics of how he handled his job.

JWs and E-Cigs
by TheClarinetist inthe other night, two of my jw coworkers were sitting out enjoying an e-cig with one of my other coworkers.
i knew from earlier that there was tobacco (well, nicotine) in it.
out of curiousity, i did some minor digging with my worldlytm coworkers and am pretty darn sure that these guys aren't doing anything else questionable... are active jws allowed to smoke e-cigs now, or did i just witness some extremely minor teenage rebellion?.

Also, if you're going to do something that could get you in trouble, why the hell would you do it in a public place where everyone knows who/where you are and other JWs from your congregation can pop in at any time?
