... like the fine print in a fraudulent contract
by cofty indaniel dennett has accused apologists of double-standards in a column in the washington post.. like all things that are worth saying it made me want to go away and really think it through for a while.
perhaps pat robinson was just being more honest about the real implications of faith?.
one of the striking differences between modern, "organized" religion and tribal or folk religions--religions without seminaries and theologians and official books--is that in tribal religions they have no double standard!

So, how much $$ would you anonymously pledge?
by Open mind ina letter dated december 7, 2009 to all congregations (not sure if it was just the us branch or not) said that the elders should ask the publishers to submit slips of paper anonymously with an amount they would be willing to contribute each month towards either:.
a: repaying the outstanding, local, kingdom hall loan, or.
b: if there is no local loan, contributing to the kingdom hall construction fund.. .

Something You Hate About The Jehovah's Witness Religion
by minimus inone thing that truly bothers me is that the religion forces you to accept an understanding they have expressed.
they might very well change their view and you simply have to accept the newest view or you are the bad guy!
the generation understanding has changed so much since its inception, how could any witness possibly be 100% sure that what they're told to believe in is "the truth"??.

Their misguided view on how the whole rest of the world is out to get them.

Welcome TITS! It's always great to see you. ;-)
I started working my way out when I was a teenager. I'd seen a lot of bad things happen as a JW. Some were in the congregation, but most happened to my family. I thought there was no point in worshipping a god who had repeatedly failed me. But my mother was an active Dub, so there was no way to get out of the meetings. She ruled the house, iron-fist-in-a-velvet-glove style.
I did a slow fade by getting more involved with school. Fortunately for me, my whole family has always valued education, so there were no objections. I also go t a job, which no one could object to because we were pretty poor. I would spend 9 - 12 hours a day at school, then work after school and on the weekends. There was no time for meetings when I was spending so many hours out of the house.
I was finally able to do a clean break once I went to college. My mother didn't accept it, and still doesn't, so we have a pretty crappy relationship.
Be glad that you have your immediate family on your side. Yes, losing your JW friends would be hard, but losing your family is much harder. It's a lot easier to make new friends than to make a new family. Besides, the majority of kids raised as JWs will leave the religion. (The JWs don't advertise it, but the only way they keep butts in the seats is by constantly getting new converts.) You may meet up with your friends later in life as ex-JWs.

I wonder how this would work with the high female-to-male ratio.

Are Jehovah's Witnesses a Christian denomination? The Feb. Watchtower seems to say so
by slimboyfat ini have not noticed the witnesses referring to themselves in the literature as a christian denomination before: is this a new development?
the february 1st wt says on page 22:.
"a high-school textbook, world religions in denmark, published in 2007, described jehovah's witnesses as a christian minority who follow the bible closely.

I'm amazed that the Witnesses are lowering themselves enough to call themselves just a denomination of a larger group. They usually tout themselves as the last bastion of true religion left on the planet.
