I stopped attending after I saw the article in the Watchtower..after 33 years... and I think of my poor parents who believed (and still do) all these years; now they won't be able to live right through armageddon... its all so sad.

My last meeting was yesterday!
by life is to short inok i was debating on doing this post but here it goes.
i have not put down my whole story on this board but enough for everyone to know that my problem with the "truth" is sex offenders.. i have fought and fought the elders and they win.
they will allow child molesters and i cannot stop that.

If its any comfort; my father is an elder and has been bucking the trend so to speak, trying to bring a more pragmatic approach to the congregation he was assigned to. Its been an uphill battle for him and will probably continue to be but he was able to get support from the CO so they are working upwards to the DO and down to the other elders in his congregation. Its not necessarily related to the sex abuse issue but its that same mindset of not using common sense to address an issue.

Hi Desi,
The brother I studied with said it wasn't important as well; that we don't serve Jehovah just because of looking to get a reward/everlasting life but rather, out of love. I told him I understood that, but some people make life choices as well as it framed our thinking. Like for me, I always thought of never seeing my parents die and now I have to address that all these years later. Similarly, some couples didn't have kids but rather said they'd wait until the new system.
He said he understood but again, it should be out of love that we serve. So I have another meeting wth him this week but yeah, no one wants to at least acknowledge that its not just a trivial thing. I imagine those in 1975 had the same issues. I'll post here the outcome but I know it puts this brother in a tough spot, I'd rather see the FDS acknowledge it at least in their magazines.

I empathsize. Although I'm not married (divorced), I've been around the Truth since I was a child (am 48 now), and I guess I was a bit unnerved in 1995; but seeing the change in 2008 was troubling and I guess this last overlapping interpretation was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I still believe in many of the core teachings, but I texted the brother I study with yesterday and told him I no longer believe in the FDS. I can't understand how you can be spirit-directed but be wrong on such a core belief. And secondly, this re-interpretation makes no logical sense.
Its confusing/frustrating now as I do not know where to turn and am at the point of leaning towards agnosticism. So I empathisize with anyone who has been impacted by the change in teaching; I wish you the best desi.

2010 District Convention - Some Thoughts on the Sunday Afternoon Session
by Olin Moyles Ghost inout of a sense of morbid curiosity, i recently attended the sunday afternoon session of the district convention.
the session consisted of a drama and the infamous "remain in the secret place of the most high" talk.
overall, i got a sense that the wts is in damage control mode because the end hasn't come yet.

I just had my study and I didn't have the heart to tell the brother that I no longer believe in what the FDS is saying. I stopped going to meetings earlier this year and I told him earlier that the generation teaching didn't make sense to me. For a moment there is seemed like some recognition registered in his eyes, but then, unfortunately, he went down the same path and said that it will all be explained in the DC.
I was also visiting my folks last weekend (in their late 70s) who have been witnesses for at least 40 years. I don't even bring it up as the original poster said, at this age, it will do them no good to dwell on the fact that they have been duped. At 48, even for me, it was tough coming to terms about the fact that I will have to worry about dying and am so glad that I did at least go to college to have at least some retirement savings. But it does break my hear when I see my parents; I remember reading material about millions now living will never die and how excited they were to have studies with myself and my siblings in the Live Forever book, etc.
But this last change? This just smacks of total disrepect for people's intelligence. On another website which is for JWs only, I stated that I was still confused and didn't quite get this new change. Someone responded and said that I need to trust the FDS and that I didn't need to necessarily do the research myself. Then it just really hit me that what has been said on these boards is so true; its a mind-control paternalistic view of the world.
Again, breaks my hear that so many sincere ones felt they had found the path to God; and not that other religions don't have their flaws, but to lead people astray on purpose is sad. There is another gentleman on the radio, Harold Camping from Family Radio network, that is saying that the end of the world will come in May 2011. Again, I listen to his radio show and so many sincere people really believe they have found the true path.
Makes me think of being agnostic/atheist.

"This Generation" New Light:" A Death Sentence For 40-50-Something JWs
by Room 215 inone of the mesages emanating from the "new light"rhetoric is that it might be prudent to prepare to die before armageddon.
better to forget about the assurances that "you will never grow old, much less die" in this old system; maybe it's time to enact a macabre plan b and latch onto a cemetary plot and prepaid funerals....

I am so sorry to hear about your father. My parents fortunately were already fully grown (in fact, I was sixteen at the time) when they learned the "truth". However, it saddens me that they used to talk about it often in terms of living through it and seeing us all be together again...now well along into their late 70s, its a bit sobering. But like you, even at my age of 48, I've stopped associating with the religion. I chose to go to college when younger, but some of my siblings didn't and we talked the other day now about how are we going to handle retirement.
Its just so pitiful the path they have led people down...

To add: At the upcoming convention, they will stress how obedience is required to get through these last days; I think this makes me the angriest. I've been studying off and on for years, was an unbaptized publisher, parents and brother are in it.. and to make a change and stress obedience simultaneously is just so controlling.
I still am very much tied the religion, but after 1995, and then 2008 seemed to restore a timeline, but this latest basically has the overlapping generations which could really span out and really makes you look at the stark foolishness and arbitrariness of it all. So my parents, now in their 70s, who hoped to not have to face death, with this new teaching, after all these years will have to face that reality along with the rest of my family. THAT's what makes me angry, setting a false expectation and pulling the rug from under people at the last minute AND telling them at the same time, gotta stay obedient!!
INFURIATING!!!

I know this is 2 or 3 years late, but... I've studied off and on with the JWs for about 31 years now and in 1995 it troubled me, but with the new understanding relating to just the anointed, it does appear that its becoming as shell game to get it right. I guess my question is, what religion did you all end up going to?
