I don't know if they still do this or not, but some JWs used to have Present's Day. They just picked a day to give presents to their kids. Of interest, these days typically came a few days after Christmas and Birthdays. :)
Do JWs still do this?

No birthday celebrations allowed, but graduation party is OK?
by gaiagirl inthings that make you go "hmmmmm": just learned that an elder i know living near waco, texas is hosting a graduation party for his son.
don't remember ever reading of any faithful christian in the bible ever having such a party.
and to think, all that honor and attention will be focused on a mere human being instead of yhwh.....

I know an elder who had heart failure while driving his car. The car crashed and rolled over, and he died. (True story.)
It would be wise for Christians to consider selling their cars and giving the money to the Watchtower Society. -

Me: "Look, if I showed you what was quoted in the creation book and what was really in the source material...would it matter who wrote it?"
Them: Silence
Cheeseman -- Thanks for sharing, and you gave a "good witness!" :) Their sound of "Silence" is deafening. -

After being a JW it's incredibly difficult to let go of thoughts and promises that were so real to us for so long. I've been out about 3 years too the same as you and I'm thinking maybe we are in a settling down period. After having our world shook up when leaving the JW's we are in the process of finding our niche and can then re-evaluate our hopes and goals in life. I take consolation in the fact that I may not know where the road I'm on is taking me but it's better then the one I was on before.
I've really enjoyed reading the various thoughts expressed in this thread. Translation's comments express my feelings on the topic. The idea that we need to be in one camp or another limits the possiblities while seeking a niche. I'm hopeful that whatever path I find will not become another deep rut. Questions about is there a god or not, life after death, what does it all mean, etc., can offer a lifetime of seeking and wonder. The day that I jump into one camp, and say that's it, is the day that seeking and wonder stops. What kind of fun is that? -

For me, it's not really about giving something up, but stepping back into the jW mindset.
I can't even imagine that today. -

Bookstudy Group Disbanded......haha
by Mary ini just got word that the bookstudy attendance in one of the groups at my hall has dwindled off to numbers so pitiful that they're dissolving this particular bookstudy group and splitting up the remainder and shipping them out to other bookstudy groups.

Our bookstudy was split up and moved around and now they've got lousy attendance everywhere.
Mary -- I think it's fair to say out of the five-weekly meetings, bookstudies are the least attended. However, the few that do well over a long period of time has little to do with following Tower rules. As in the group at your house, the folks click, they feel at ease with each other, and enjoy the social experience. It has nothing to do with the so-called spiritual food from the Tower. The Society doesn't like that--at all!
The little minds of the Tower begets smaller elder minds. The Tower and many elders are very jealous and can't stand sharing the spotlight. The Society likes to point out how Jehovah is a "Jealous God," because that describes them so well. A dictionary definition of "jealous" is, "bitter and unhappy because of another's advantages, possessions, or luck." The example of the bookstudy at your house is a case in point. -

I hated having to get all dressed up to sit in my own living room I could never understand why all the pomp was so nessary
DL76 -- I knew a few JWs that helped build the factory at the WT Farm. They were required to change into other clothing before they could have lunch. These were the folks doing the free labor of building the Tower's factory, but they couldn't eat until they looked like a good little brain-dead JW. After lunch, they put on their work clothing again until dinner time.
When a cult is into control, "pomp" no matter how stupid is nessary. It teaches the follower who's in charge.
Of interest, the JWs I knew who put their jobs on hold to build the factory came back very bitter people. Their suits and ties couldn't hide it. -

it just seemed so odd that this building had once seemed so powerful and grand to me, and now it just looks like a silly empty and depressing meeting hall in the middle of nowhere.
Goodgirl -- Your comments brought me back to the remaining visits at the KH, and last assembly. The magic and power of the Tower was gone, and even the buildings took on a cold nothingness. I could clearly see the setup for what it was, and nothing shined--"the Truth" was a lie after all. -

Hello Tyler, and welcome to the forum. Hope you enjoy the fellowship, and tons of information. There is also a lot of crazyness and fun--a little something for everyone.
