Minimus--You're right, of course. Members of religious high-control groups don't think--they obey. When they start thinking--they leave . . . and here we are at last!

Minimus ? thanks for the welcome. Ken P. ? Looking back while doing time in the Tower, it?s interesting to remember how our WT-Filters worked with issues that didn?t make sense. For example, most JWs knew the Society was buying property and building like crazy in the ?60s and early ?70s. However, we reasoned Jehovah was causing the Society to grow so it could handle the increased work after the BIG A. It?s like the old saying, ?If you tell a lie big enough, most will believe it? (or something like that). :-)

As minimus stated, the JWs in the '60s & '70s didn't save for the future because they trusted the Tower's 1975 foolishness. I was one of the many from that period who didn't question the Society?s policy of buying property while encouraging the flock to sell the little they had ?in the short time remaining.? Planning for the future (financial or retirement) was for the spiritually weak. Adjustments are necessary when exiting ends-time groups like the Witnesses. I started college at 40, which was a way of living for today, and planning for the future. We can?t return to the scene of the crime when we bought into the Tower?s nonsense, and recover the time and money lost. However, it?s important to move on and enjoy today while planning for tomorrow. It?s never too late to smell the roses while working in the garden. BTW, this is my first post on the list after several months away. It?s nice seeing some old friends, and seeing many new folks, too. JAVA--counting time in the Coffee Shop

We are not a cult!
by Nosferatu in"we are not a cult!".
yeah, we've heard this one before.
how did/do the jws back up this statement?

I've enjoyed reading this thread, and the well-thought out comments. The word "cult" is used by many just because someone has a different belief system from their own. In many cases, cult is a trigger word, and its definition is open for debate, even among scholars of religious studies.
As already pointed out, no one believes they are in a religious cult. While doing scholarly research years ago on the Unification Church (Moonies), I couldn't believe how similar their behavior and thought processes were with the JWs. Most scholars suggest the Moonies are a "cult," but as a former JW, I didn't allow myself to view the JW religion as a cult. Yet, the behavior and mind set of a JW goes hand-in-hand with identified cults or cult-like groups.
I don't like using "cult" because it typically shuts down discussion with Unification members, JWs, or groups like them. Many folks studying New Religious Movements (i.e., new religions less than 200-years old) use the term, "high-control religion" for groups with cult-like behavior. But as the saying goes, "if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, it's a duck." Yes, I think Jehovah's Witnesses fall under the category of cult. Telling a JW or Moonie they are part of a cult religion will shut down any discussion.

Have You Ever Written A Letter To the Society?
by minimus inwhen i was a kid, i remember my family regularly visiting other friends, including a brother that was the bible study servant.
every week, he would send a different letter to the society on a variety of subjects.
when our families would meet, he would ask us the question and we would do research or give our opinion on what we thought the society's answer was going to be.

Unless one praises the Tower, they are not interested in answering questions. In their self-appointed role as God's Organization, they view questions from the rank-n-file as not "waiting on Jehovah." I wrote a letter to the Tower several years ago--still waiting for a reply. I guess Jehovah gets a lot of mail and can't keep up with the volume.

I love bikes, too. My last bike was a Honda Super Hawk (305cc engine) in the mid 1960s. I still look at them, but might settle for a red-convertible sports car--they have bumpers, and I can put the top up when it rains.
