Tai chi and yoga are immoral and spiritistic, but acupuncture is a scientifically-proven curing method that deserves coverage in Awake!

What Are Some "Strange" Beliefs Jehovah's Witnesses Have?
by minimus ini think it's fair to say that witnesses' beliefs are often odd.
how they come to a "biblical" conclusion is often unreasonable and far fetched!.
please list some ideas and views that jehovah's witnesses have that are unusual or weird..

Have you tried reading a Bible that has not been tampered with by the jw's?
If you can find me a single Bible translation that has not been significantly edited, I will give you my entire savings account. There is no such thing as an "untampered" Bible. That is why they are all called "translations" or "editions." If you're going to say that other people have their biased blinders on, you might want to consider your own by reading up on the history of the Bible and how it came together as one collection. Even the most conservative Christian scholars agree that the Bible as we know it is the creation of man, regardless of how they believe the stories themselves originated. Centuries of dozens of different versions of each book circulating around, being edited at will by perhaps thousands of men, compilers picking and choosing which books to include...it never existed as one book until generations after Jesus, and there's never been one agreed-upon definition of what constitutes the Bible.
You can criticize the WTBTS version of it for its translation "errors" and willful changes, but to suggest that others are any closer to "correct" is a bit silly.

Some of our older ones wore them; I remember one anointed brother who always had one on. I can't, however, ever remember any man under, say, 90 who ever rocked a bowtie.

My life is good.
It's amazing to me how much baggage I still have at times, but I think that's largely because I left in 2005 yet didn't really begin to deal with any of it until about 8 months ago. So there's a lot of stuff that I pushed down and am only now working through. JWR has been a lifesaver for me because I love the community there, and here at JWN, I get a lot of good reading done that helps me out.
My biggest challenge is the same one most people have: Family. My mother is still a Super-Duper-Pioneer, some of my siblings are still in, and it's taken me a while to build up a small but wonderful group of friends on the outside, so I still deal with loneliness periodically. Pressure from my mother can get unbearable at times, but I'm getting better at coping with it.
Some things that have been essential for me have been college, volunteering, and getting involved in community events. Even though I still don't have a lot of friends, just spending time around other people at volunteer events, charity walks, community meetings, and so on helps me tremendously, both with overcoming any feelings of isolation and also developing stronger social skills. So that's always my biggest recommendation for people who are now starting to ease their way out, or for those who've been out for a while but still struggle socially. If you can force yourself to get involved in anything you can, it helps beyond words. (And don't mention the JW stuff unless you have to or are really close to people! It simply marks you as "weird" and makes it harder to adjust.)

Has anyone simply stated, "I have not been in service this month"? Do they eventually stop calling?
What's your experience with this part of fading.
I just stopped submitting and didn't return their phone calls. Worked just fine for me. My stance is that I don't owe them anything, so why go out of my way to cater to them and their needs?
And really, if they're so desperate to add a few more hours to their report, they can get off their asses and do some work themselves. I never knew a single elder who was active in service beyond their bare minimum requirement, yet they get so huffy about making sure everyone else is laboring? It's pathetic.i did report zero hour, they let me go because i said i am suffering from mental depression
Easily one of the best excuses to use for anyone fading, though it's terrible that it's usually true in most cases. I got a lot of "exemptions" because of that, and I know it's the main reason why they've generally left me alone these past few years.
That many here are SO scared about it, like little girls.
Ahh, WT misogyny, how I've missed you...

A question
by dgp inas a worldly, i realize that, if i were to say something about the watchtower, it would almost always be something that i learned from someone else.
i have few personal experiences of what the wt is like.. the words of ray franz, for example, were a different matter.
he knew the beast from inside, to a level few other witnesses knew it.

In sum: the information you have to share is important. How, who is going to preserve it for the future?
This is why I cringe every time I read someone saying they burned or threw out their WT publications. Just as we need to preserve "apostate" info, we also need to preserve the source material so that it can be studied and learned from down the road.

Most Ridiculous Thing You've Ever Been Counseled On
by MrFreeze ini'm sure topics like this have already come up but they tend to get hilarious with the absolute absurdity that goes on in the kh.
i was once counseled for not shaving after two days.
i was also counseled by a sister for eating lucky charms cereal.

Oh, and I also listened to U2, and apparently "The Joshua Tree" is somewhere on the same level as Marilyn Manson.

Having my body.
I was already 5'8" by middle school (5'11" now) and was one of those girls who went through very dramatic development pretty much overnight. I ended up having very curvy hips and very large breasts, much to my chagrin. As if that's not mortifying enough as a young girl suffering through gym class, imagine having pioneers and elders in the congregation telling you that your figure is tempting the men and that you need to hide it in order to "protect" them. (WTF? Easier solution: Creepy old men should stop checking out 12-year-olds.)
I went through a phase of binding just because they made me so ashamed of myself, but fortunately, I got over that. The next time I got pulled aside a few years later about daring to wear a shirt that actually fit instead of a potato sack, I "helpfully" offered to start wearing maternity dresses instead, since that should have provided adequate coverage and hidden my frame a bit. That shut them up. But the self-esteem damage was already done. :/

Whenever we had questions of cultural dress in our congregation (it came up fairly frequently), the answer was always that you should never dress in a way that draws special attention to you, and wearing something not culturally "native" to the area is therefore unacceptable. (This discussion usually came up when African immigrants in our congregation wore elaborate outfits that our U.S.-centric congregation members didn't like.) So here in Connecticut, wearing a bolo tie would definitely be unacceptable.

I'm right around 25%. I wish it were lower, but heating and electricity costs in my area are so expensive that I'm actually getting away with a bargain in many respects.
