That joke was made ad nauseum in my congregation. Putting it into a 'sweet story' doesn't say "authentic" to me.

The creator of "Sherlock Holmes" was no bastion of rationality himself
by Nathan Natas init seems strange that a man best known for creating the quintessential detective, who based his deductions solely on reason, would also be one of the biggest proponents of spiritualism around the turn of the last century.
equally strange is that a man who based his career of performing illusions and magic tricks was one of the most stringent disbelievers of the same religion.
perhaps strangest of all was the friendship of these two men, sir arthur conan doyle and harry houdini.... continue reading here: http://www.neatorama.com/2010/01/04/the-end-of-a-beautiful-friendship-houdini-and-arthur-conan-doyle/.

I don't think its completely incongruous to be a rational thinker and still hope that there is more to reality than what is seen. It could even be that a mind so adept at boiling down everything into its rational components yearns even more than average for something greater to appear.
Yes, he was an interesting fellow for sure, though. I think I remember reading that he remained faithful to his ailing wife despite falling in love with another woman.

loving someone vs. being in love vs. infatuation....
by oompa inhelp me out here...i guess that there are all levels of love esp in a marriage.
with the tiger woods mess the news is there are many reasons people stay in marriages even when there is little or no love.... i have been infatuated before and i freakin love it!!!
!.....and btw...many a long term romance starts with infatuation...in fact i wonder how many people really in love started with it?

Being infatuated is what makes the rest of the human experience tolerable, IMO. BTW, any pretty young thing need someone to talk to?

"Robert Downey Jr.'s 'Sherlock Holmes' isn't for the Doyle faithful"
by Nathan Natas inso the headlines say.. i saw the movie yesterday and enjoyed it tremendously.
i am very happy that robert downy jr. appears to have gotten control of his personal demons.. i don't worry about sir arthur conan doyle spinning in his grave.
if he is, it is probably with great joy that the character he created has proven to be so entertaining and inspirational to millions of people, and thus shall it ever be, amen.. downey's sherlock is as cerebral as rathbone's, but with an added element of physicality.

The movie was very enjoyable. Faithful, not really. Its true, Sherlock was described as employing some boxing, oriental martial art, and single stick fighting technique, but this movie overdoes it. If Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are all you've ever seen, than this latest version is a great deal more accurate, however. The best, most faithful treatment of both the character and Arthur Doyle's stories is, by far, Jeremy Brett's portrayal in the Granada television series and films.

Pick a side, stick with it, and be straightforward and open about it to everyone. Being half jehovah's witness is a great way to mindfuck a kid.

Favorite Ozzy Guitar Player?
by lepermessiah ini was curious what some of you metal fans thought..... randy rhodes was a legend, but i like jake e. lee and zakk wylde too.. i was just listening to jake e. lee's band "badlands" - i know a lot of people didnt like jake, but were also comparing him to randy rhodes.. (if you like 80's metal/zep-influenced rock, that is a cool debut album).
jade's song / winter's call from badlands is awesome.
check it out on youtube if you havent heard it.. .
