Exodus- Ridley Scott film
by Diogenesister inhi all, any thoughts on the ridley scott film exodus :gods and kings my people?
generally, its more or less as i would envision it.. love the representation of gods spirit/angel as a child of ?10 - great age, they have not lost their innocence but are aware of the dark side of life, question everything are bitingly honest in their assesments and you can often have surprisingly adult conversations with them.
of course in all this they are often very very funny(i may be biased as my kids are this age!!!).

Yes, thank you Twitch for replying, I think you are right there about the voices. I saw 'The last Temptation' but somehow I think Scott would have portrayed God/spirit as child regardless. I recently saw a film about Jesus 'Killing Jesus'(with arab cast complete with ululations!) again the faithfull getting their knickers in a twist about the lack of 'miricles'.Like Exodus naturalistic portrayal of these events made them look more realistic -(at least these types of film give the nod that these events may have actually taken place!) but this is not popular with the literal minded religous groups. -

An excellent, very civil debate between an atheist and a JW.
by Island Man ini stumbled upon this video while doing my periodic youtube search of the keyword "jehovah".
in the video a jw (actually two jws, but only one does most of the speaking) debate an atheist.
the atheist is a mild-mannered iranian who at first seems deceptively easy and clueless (i think it has to do with the fact that english is not his first language), but soon proves he's no walkover - calmly, mildly and civilly.

Wow just wow!! I so like when he said that believing in God is basically the easy option so why wouldn't you belive if you could - a universe that is utterly neutral to your life is bloody hard to deal with as an atheist. I just wish straight away he had mentioned INTENTIONALITY and our ancient need to see intention in things for our own survival as a species. That follows through into seeing a "purpose" in this non exsistant God. -

And in some ways you can't help pitying the JW r &f because they have no real chance in these debates - as the wtbs dont allow them to GET THEMSELVES AN EDUCATION that they may at least attempt a rebuttal. Aside from being completely wrong of course too! -

- Love it when God makes Moses a cuppa as he chips away at the 10 commandment stones (hopes he remembers the one about not boiling a KID in its MOTHERS MILK!)
- I like the dialogue between angel and Moses which begins with the angel noting that Moses often disagrees with God"and yet we are both still here " (moses : taps away at stones and nods sagely)This fits with the jewish perception of their "struggle"with God and that Satan is an 'employee'of God,
- Angel/God gives him option not to continue with stones if he doesnt agree that he WILL (at some point )STUMBLE and stones will remain CONSTANT (do you hear that GB, ALL men are sometimes WRONG and cannot be relied on to LEAD ABSOLUTELY)
- Like bit were sea is about to crash down on Ramses and Moses and he offers his hand to HIS BROTHER ..."come with us, you won't make it back" ie moses FORGIVES Ramses and wants to become an Isrealite..more realistic than the black and white GOOD /BAD you are light or dark thinking of GB and their ilk
- LOVE Moses knocking on his Midianite missis door (hear that Phinehas you plonker ....) with the whole tribe outside ..,"Er..,brought some mates to stay s'alright innit?!! Would love to hear anyone else's take on't!??

Why would Jehovah and Jesus talk to Satan?
by hardtobeme inif satan is the greatest apostate there is, why he was allowed to be in heaven?
job chapters 1 and 2 says that jehovah talked to him.
wasn't jehovah supposed to shun his son and set an example to all parents?.

Kaik. You are so right ... surely the jews know THEIR OWN BOOKS the satan IS considered an employee of God, (early on likely a lesser God as the old books are polytheistic and were redacted ) -

Bible History
by bitsnbobs inhi all,i left the org in the late 90s.
not because of beliefs or the 1914/generation fiasco.
just thoughtlessness, hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance.

Theres a great documentary Isreal Finklestein has made too based on the bible unearthed. Just google it. These guys are basically saying there was no exodus and that thr caananites and Isrealites are one and the same. Obviously the right wing Isreali extremists do not like this, its a political hot potato to say the least. Please let us know what you know about genisis 3.15... -

I Don't Get It!
by John Aquila inthere are literally about thirty young single very good looking sisters in this one kingdom hall under the age of 30. that is just one kingdom hall.
in the circuit there are literally hundreds of young beautiful jw girls under 30 who are single and anxious to get married.
about two years ago, this one single good looking brother who is about 30 years old and who is an elder married this plain looking sister who is 59 years old.

t seems like there is a lot of confusion these days among JW as to what a generation is and which one you belong to. Also, these young Brothers are tired of waiting for the "New System" and the promise or having their own pet Lion and they've settled for a "Cougar" in the here and now. PETE ZA HUT second funniest post after 'the old rugged dot' JOHN AQUILA. 1) Older men seem to loose their judgement over what 'a looker 'is. I know I have. I put it to you that someone you find attractive now (ie under 30. Enough) you wouldnt have when u were younger. 2)Elders of 25 to 30 (total power)with low self esteem.REALLY?????? 3)Forgot that just because men have left the org doesnt stop them being sexist w@#*@!s. -

Getting it out of my system, a VERY long introduction/outpouring..
by adimmedlight inwarning, novel ahead:.
after a few months of lurking on this site, i've decided to take the plunge...i don't really care so much about introducing myself, but somehow there is some relief in the thought of getting my little story out there, just getting it out of my system.
i am the oldest of 5 kids.

If there is one good thing I learned after I left the JWs it is this: Better to have questions that I can't answer than answers that I can't question. LOVE THIS Fleshlyheadmutant ! -

I really enjoyed reading your story..lapped it up. As one of the other posters said..you could literally write a book, even the best need editors! You sound wise beyond your years, which is not surprising considering the life you have lived. It might be worth looking at some therapy.., and definately, above all else, if you can educate yourself. Do read 'Crises of conscience'by Ray Franze and maybe some history (Jeruselem by Simon Sebag Montefiore) and if you can do a course on critical thinking skills..a bit of light philosophy perhaps too!!?? Anything to ensure you have the tools you need to weed out the harmful from the benign. There is some good stuff on the web about recognizing signs of a cult. I am so glad you met kindness too in the JW, there ARE many good people who attend which is why it is so cruel when they are told to shun (possibly when true christian love and understanding is needed most). As you say the constant watching and being watched rang a bell for me, so stressful, so big brother 1984 ish, a modern witch hunt is what it is... closed sessions of JCs with zero rights. 'The world' is more just than that! I wish you lots of love, so glad u posted, thank you
