Religion is more than doctrine.
And *that* is one of the reasons they can't keep people
this is obviously a question for the older generation.
i'm really curious what it was like to be a witness in the 60's and 70's?.
was the society as strict as it is today?.

I was but a small kid in the seventies, yet I don't remember shunning of *family* members being so harshly on the agenda.. 'Spiritual shunning' is a term that springs to mind. No discussion of spiritual matters with disfellowshiped family. DA wasn't even an issue.
Can anyone corroborate this please?
i read a fantastic quote that applies to the way the society treats those who choose to leave...:.
"when a toxic person can no longer control you, they will try and control how others see you".
just wanted to share....
This quote hit me like a ton of bricks when I first read it because it's exactly how my crazy abusive ex behaved. Not to mention the Org of course.
i don't think this topic has been discussed before but yesterday i read something to the effect that trump wants a human mission to mars to be completed within his presidency.. with that being said, the watchtower teaches that what started on earth ends on earth, in other words, the fall of adam and eve would end with the passing of the 1,000 year millennial reign when christ destroys all his enemies, rebellious "perfect" humans, and the devil and his demons who are let out the abyss for a short while.
he then hands the kingdom back to his father.
an elder in my old congregation once told us during a public talk that he was an ardent astronomer but then referenced the scripture where it says, "the earth he has given to the sons of men" (psalms 115:16).
I long for the day extra terrestrials arrive and tell us that worship of a supreme being has been redundant in advanced civilizations for millenia.😋
i'm reading a book called "what to do when they knock" that goes over the jw book "what does the bible really teach?".
it points out that the "bible really teach" book, on page 218, makes a bit of a point about there being only one archangel.
it says michael is "the archangel" and emphasizes that "the" means only one.
What is it with Watchtower and this damned Germanic hierarchy thing - even the *archangel's* don't get any equality!!!
so my friends have had free power for years thanks to solar panels and a great contract with power company.
they even get credits for having 20 panels on thier roof!
i put 18 solar panels on my roof cost $9900 dollars.
Waton this is very interesting - so it may be possible to capture enough solar energy to cool the planet?
Sorry, I am very ignorant about this.
Do you mean cool the planet because we will use less fossil fuels or *literally* cool the planet using solar power once we can store it properly?
I thought at first it seemed rarther therapeutic.
Maybe someone who has just awoken. I know I went through stages of feeling like this.
when growing up as a child i would go to the toilet, and now as an adult i know what those noises were.. they were tugging and jerking sounds, along with heavy breathing.
i had no idea what was going on.
i remember too telling my mum about it.. but i now know.
I have heard this talked about time and again. Is it the thrill of doing something wrong a turn-on? Or a subconscious rebellion - spitting on the floor of the Kingdom Hall, metaphorically speaking (or not)? Or sheer boredom?
I know this much; I've never heard of any other ideology doing such a thing in their temple, church, mosque etc.
just though i'd start a thread devoted to languages, dialects/sociolects and accents, with the idea being that posters can comment on any language, or dialect or accent of any language, on this thread.. any phrases, expressions or idioms that you find interesting are also welcome.
first, the subject of english accents came up on another thread.. the british isles have many different types of accent (although many of the dialects may be dying out), and if i start to take a closer look, i can't help but see 'patterns' .... in received pronunciation of standard english, the letter r is pronounced initially, between vowels, and after consonants, e.g.
red, arrow, break.
Interesting. I have a few questions and comments.
Do you remember the old Hovis add? With the young lad pushing his bike up a hill With cobbled streets?( iirc). The man talking had a very particular accent. Lancashire? Are these the second "r" pronounciation's you describe? Very interesting that they may be a hangover of old languages.
What is a sociolect? Each generation of children seem to have their very own particular words or phrasing that no other does, is this what you mean?
For Americans Always wonder about the accents of other countries. For example Sam Herd sounds a bit like a cowboy to me, where is his accent from? How about Stephen Lett with his " projick's "( projects).where is his accent from? I imagine newer countries are gaining accents, just as older ones are loosing them. I could be wrong
My sister-in-laws family speak only what they call ' dialect" in southern Italy. I've never understood the difference between dialect and accent. For instance, patois in Jamaican is still English, so I would call it an accent. Is that so for French patois? Or is it a dialect?
Sorry they are not very intellectual questions!Just my musings.😋
as we know, witnesses teach that adam and eve were perfect and then committed the first act of sin and rebellion.. they in turn were cursed, and we all declined as their offspring.
humans supposedly lived shorter and shorter lives, and became more imperfect and sinful.. the further away in time humans go then, they should be getting worse.
so why is it then that as a society, humans have actually improved in so many ways?.
Rainbow_Troll My great aunt, who grew up poor in rural Arkansas during the great depression, could read and speak Latin fluently!
But could your Aunt programme a computer? Did she understand the influence of historical, contemporary and cultural factors in the development of photographic artwork, a thorough knowledge of the sciences - Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity. - understand the periodic table?Biological sciences, sociology? Economics? It's not fair, of course, to have expected your Aunt to know any of these things given *when* she went to school. But that's my point. Kids now have so much more *to* know. And yes, many of them do study Miltons ' Paradise Lost' or go to a theological seminary and study the Bible. Probably far more do these things than did back then.
