Work Christmas functions: Being a Bible Student (unbaptized)
by rulehayl inhi all,i have been studying with the witnesses for more than 6 months and regularly attend both midweek & weekend meetings, and i am nearly at the end of the "bible teach" book.
my boss is adamant i attend team christmas functions.
she knows about my studying and potential baptism next year, and has suggested that i attend and just not participate in activities like kris kringle.

There are 364 other days in the year to celebrate & socialize.
Not with " worldly" people you won't. That is most definitely not ok. You are expected to keep association with non-Jws to the minimum. Essentially work and school. The 2016 " wife of lot" convention videos even condemned associating with non-jw FAMILY. Visiting a brother, even AFTER celebrations are done, on his birthday would be a huge no-no.
Also your school analogy, comparing the need for rules with that of rules within cults, was way off the Mark. Basically a cult is an abuser and CAN be best compared with an abusive partner. A school is a place which benefits you in the end, the rules there to help you achieve your positive outcome can be compared to the' rules' within a healthy relationship - honesty equality, fairness including sharing financial burdens, commitment, respect, unconditional love.
The rules within a cult, an unhealthy place that does not benefit you, and their rules can best be compared to the 'rules' within an abusive relationship - lies, deception, extreme hierarchy and inequality, unfair burdens, financial dishonesty, one sided commitment, violence towards spouse & kids acceptable, love conditional on your obedience.

Rulehayl I have actually religion-shopped through other forms of Christianity, but they don't do it for me. The only other people to come close are the Mormons.
I do worry about someone who finds the two most appealing religions the two largest cults.
I don't think this lady will come back as I believe she thought we were active dubs.
I can understand someone being defensive if she is a loyal type but it doesn't mean some of the things she learnt here didn't sink in. Some people just take longer to process stuff.
Doesn't her name make you think of Rue-Paul??!!!

Hi misguided. Are you married to Daigle1212? Is he ok ?? I just read his post and felt so very very sorry for him. Brave man. Is your sister-in-law ( victim) still a witness? If so does she still have contact with her father?
I hope so much your family ( the children's generation and extended family) find peace. I can't understand your mum in law. I know nonjw women married to men who do this do stay with them, but I can't help but think in the witness world the pressure to do so is much greater. I have little compassion for her, though, shunning the son that stood by her victim daughter.
Hope all is well with YOU and yours. All the very best Dio xx

"In a human moment before Jehovah grabbed her"
by truthseeker ini often wondered how far back the witnesses had been involved with my family.
my grandmother died at the end of 2013 and while going through her photos we found some of my great-grandmother, dora, who was born in 1901 and died in 1994. there is a photo of dora dated 1946 standing outside her house in east riding, yorkshire.
on the back of the photo her husband had written "in a human moment before jehovah grabbed her".. my great grandfather, who died before i was born, did not like the witnesses.

oh Truthseeker your great grandmother was an extremely talented woman. The oil painting at The top is stunning, as is The beautiful rose.
The cartoon illustration reminds me so much of The very early Disney drawings...the very first Mickey mouse cartoons and super early Betty Boop. Its the shape of the faces. Gorgeous. The stylish clothes drawings in your grandma's scrapbook wouldn't look out of place in a modern designers port folio, it's funny how clothes come around. I remember those thick stockings, my great grandmother used to wear them! You could obviously still obtain them in the 80's....they were opaque, made of thick cotton I believe, were an odd pebble shade and had very distinctive thick seams which your great grandmother so clearly illustrates.
Thank goodness your family have managed to hang on to so many precious treasures - given they travelled, plus the disruption of two world wars . They are priceless. I'm sure a design museum would love to exhibit them!! An art historian would certainly be enthralled! Thank you so much for sharing them with us. Boy I love this forum! I'm sure people I knew would have crossed paths with your grandmother, but since they are all passed sadly I will never know.

What Would Happen If A Governing Body Member Was In Russia After The Label Of Extremist Was Held Up In Court
by Brokeback Watchtower inwould they get their visa revoked?
would they be arrested?

I know Marc Sanderson hot footed it right outta there straight away !! I think the same day they lost the appeal. I remember them bragging on the "miracle" that they managed to obtain tickets at the airport(last minute) when their usual travel agent had sold out!
Hold the press!!!
D'ya think the pope will have 'ole Sanderson declared a saint when he finds out?!

I've slways wondered about this. I mean, Jesus is on record as celebrating it.
Actually jw's do give gifts on one special day, wedding anniversary celebrations. I don't know how that one managed to slip through Rutherford's net! I'm guessing that since he did not live with his wife he just plumb forgot about it !!!

Oh truthseeker I am totally blown away by your poignant and beautiful story. The family snapshot is stunning and so natural...your grandfather was a handsome and talented chap! Have you framed his drawings? There is something quite timeless about artwork from this period, the 20s/30s are perhaps the most stylish era ever. I would also love to see your grandmother's work, too Did she keep up her art after her baptism? If so I wonder if it changed at all.
I recall John Lennon saying that there is a whole celestial warehouse of work never created on Earth because of heroin.
The same could be said for Watchtower. I imagine a whole warehouse full of music and art-forms on another time-plain never made by creative people who became witnesses😢
What an intriguing family history you have! Artists, heart-ache and cults...I hope your great-grandmother was not shunned by her zealous baby daughter from the photo, in later years. Of course shunning was not a thing when your great-grandmother and grandmother were baptised.
I've noticed there seem to be a lot of Witnesses from Yorkshire. I wonder if it just that my own connection, despite being from the Home Counties, was with Leeds witnesses that I notice this. I would be interested to know whether there are any statistics showing numbers of Witnesses from what regions in the UK. I expect only Watchtower would hold such information.
