HintofLime, I like that chart. I didn't understand the difference between atheist, agnostic, and gnostic. Now I finally understand.

The upside of atheism
by paul from cleveland ini realize whether you believe in god or the non-existence of god it has to be taken on faith since both positions are unknowable and unprovable.
however, i can understand faith in god as basically a hope for something better.
i can also understand agnosticism; admitting it's unknowable but still leaving the door open (perhaps the only intellectually honest option).

To those who were born in
by poopsiecakes inwhile you were a witness, did you ever play the what if game?
i would occasionally sit with my friends and wed bandy the ideas around...if we werent born in would we be interested if someone knocked at our door...would we want to go to college...would we be promiscuous.... it was interesting to hear the responses and i think about that now.
one thing i always knew was that if someone knocked at my door a) chances are i wouldnt answer and b) although i would be polite, i would not have any interest whatsoever.

I've thought about this before. I always knew without a doubt that if I wasn't a born-in I wouldn't have been interested. I used to be so thankful to Jehovah that I was born-in because otherwise I would not have came into "the truth" and would have died at armageddon.
Even in my most die hard dub days, I used to always put the jws in the same category as the mormons. Of coarse, I never told anyone that because I knew it wouldn't go over too well.
As for going to college, I really don't know if I would have been interested in that. I'm interested in it now but I grew up thinking that it was stupid and a waste of time. If I wasn't a born-in I honestly don't know how that would have affected my attitude towards education.

I posted a thread yesterday about my husband wanting to buy a scratch off ticket. He was going to ask the elders if it was okay but decided to not wait and bought one tonight. The first ticket he bought he won his dollar back. So he used that dollar to buy another one and won $80. We know that that's not the norm though. I guess you could call it beginners luck. I was silently cheering inside that he did something without waiting to ask the elders even though he said he would.
Oh, and he did split the winnings with me.

Help - my husband wants to buy scratch off tickets!
by doublelife inbut, i don't see that as a bad thing.
he asked me over lunch if i think it's wrong and i told him no.
we discussed why the society says it's wrong and i told him why i don't agree with it and he agreed.

Wow. I didn't think I would get this many responses this fast.
First off, I don't think that gambling is the best way to spend money. The reason I approved it with my husband is twofold:
1) The tickets he wants to buy are only $1. He will buy one ticket whenever he fills up his car for gas. He only fills up for gas once a week so the most money he would waste in a month is around four to five dollars.
2) If I can get him to do something the WTS says is a no no, that's a plus in my eyes.
Mad Sweeney: The reason I want him to ask the elders is because if they tell him no, which I'm thinking they will, then that will impress upon him how there are going beyond the bible and making man-made rules.
With all that being said, Outlaw, you make a good point I didn't think of about it should only be for entertainment. Maybe I should talk to him about that.

But, I don't see that as a bad thing. He asked me over lunch if I think it's wrong and I told him no. We discussed why the society says it's wrong and I told him why I don't agree with it and he agreed. We've already come to an agreement as to how much money would be spend on it and I asked him what his motive is for wanting to buy it. He said he just wants to try to win some pocket change. With the type of tickets he wants to buy he would only win maybe $100, maybe less. So we've established that his motive is not greed which is what would make it wrong according to the bible and according to the GB. So the last point I made was that he needs to ask the elders if that is something he could do or would he get in trouble for it and he said he would ask. The question I have is, is this something that is just looked down upon or would he get in trouble for it? If he's not allowed to do it, how can I reason with him and use this to my advantage?

Satan Takes a Trip
by Farkel injehovah ushers satan into his presence.. jehovah: "listen satan, the thousand year reign is just about up, and according to the bible, i've gotta let you go back to earth and tempt the people, so you'd better go down and see what's happening before you get to work.
damn.
i wished i had picked another book to endorse besides that bible.

by doublelife inso i went though the whole 'generation' issue with my husband and i got him to admit that the "new light" does not make since.

Thanks for all of your responses. You all gave me some things to consider. I feel like I'm in a better position to talk to my husband about this. I'll probably wait a little while before bringing this up since we just talked about this yesterday. I don't want him thinking I'm trying to attack him. But the next time it's appropriate to bring this up I'll be better prepared.

I don't know why I didn't think of this before. I went to jwfacts.com and there is a page on JWs and War. There is an article quoted from the '97 Awake where it says jws are not pacifist. And it also gives a list of other religions that don't go to war.
And Scully, I like your comment. But I can't seem to get past his circular reasoning that the "light gets brighter" and to "wait on Jehovah."
