Awwwwww, look at the sweet, adorable little boy reading a story about genocide and rape (note the giggles from the audience when he talks about "raping" at 3:14).
Poor little dude. I hope he comes around and gets out once he's a little older. This makes me remember a 10-year-old kid in my old congregation who got assigned to read "Song of Solomon". When he got to the parts about a body like a palm tree and breasts like date clusters, and climbing up on the palm tree and eating the date clusters and such, the poor kid's face went all beet red and there were a lot of snickers.

For non-believers: What evidence would it take for you to believe in 'god'?
by jay88 init all comes down to evidence (but funny how we tend not to accept the evidence that indicates that what be actually believe to be true might be wrong).. this is a statement made by nick in previous thread of his.. >>>>>>>>>>.
if the ot 'god' reappeared today, would that be evidence of 'god'?.

@tec Again, ridiculously convoluted for somebody all-powerful with the presumed ability to be completely unambiguous if he/she/it wanted. No thanks.
The question was "what evidence would it take for you to believe in god?" I gave my answer. The evidence would have to be something unambiguous, obvious, and not subject to "interpretation" (which, let's face it, the Bible totally is). Not circular logic like "the Bible is evidence that god exists. Because the Bible says so."
It would have to be everybody on earth and with the same message because, as I said, an appearance to a single person but not to others either signifies either delusion or god being a favoritist prick (whatever "reasons" you might come up with to justify said favoritist prickishness). As far as I'm concerned, there is no #3. If there is a god, he's presumably a big boy and if he cares to personally and unequivocally address me and everyone else on earth, quit the vague "it's all in my book, which has been interpreted thousands of ways over thousands of years" bullshit and cut out all the conflicting middle men, he knows where to find us. Hell, I invite it. But it hasn't happened yet.

If a god really wanted to, it would concoct the cosmic equivalent of the Babel fish (Hitchhiker's Guide reference) so we could all understand what it was saying, unequivocally, at once.

@tec That makes no sense if you live in a country or area that does not worship or has never heard of whichever god you are referring to (or lived during a time period before that god was ever heard of or worshipped). Sucks to be them, then, I guess. They lost the birth lottery. Which brings me back to possibility number 2, which is that such a god is a dick, picks favorites, and doesn't give everyone a fair shot. QED.

I knew a few really hardcore dubs who wouldn't even watch super-tame stuff like Disney movies (because of the "magic") or "Wizard of Oz" (because it had 'wizard' in the title).
Once I was watching "Singing in the Rain" with a P.O.'s wife and she turned it off and walked out because of Gene Kelly's dream dance with Cyd Charisse near the end ("too sexual!") It was a 1950's family musical, for Christ's sake!

@keyser:
Right, because when a god is all secretive like that and sequesters one person and reveals itself to only that one person as their "messenger" (as always seems to be the case with religious prophets, etc.), there are really only two possibilities:
1) That person has mental issues/delusions
2) The person is perfectly sane, but god is a real dick who could just as easily (being all-powerful) cut out the middle man, simplify things, and allow everyone on earth the same knowledge of him and exactly what he wants by fairly telling them all the exact same thing face-to-face...but chooses not to. Because he enjoys the confusion, I guess.

If he/she/it revealed itself directly (no human "messengers") not only to me, but to every other human being everywhere else on earth, at the same time, regardless of gender/culture/religion/etc., so that there could be no possibility of mental illness, or delusion, or hypnosis, or whatever, then I could believe.
And it would have to be notable. Like, an appearing and speaking to everyone, the exact same message, at the exact same time.
None of this cryptic "god IS everywhere and DOES reveal himself to everybody! Can't you feel the wind, see the trees, read his 2,000-year-old Holy Book?!" crap.
Blame god for making me an atheist. If a god wanted me to believe in it, I would have already.
