Witnessing by Mail - Where Do They Get the Addresses From???
by AudeSapere in.
i'm wondering where the publishers get their address lists when they do 'witnessing-by-mail'.. i live in a gated community (moved here 6-years ago).
this week i received a letter addressed to my *parents* (mr. & mrs. xxxxxxx xxxxx) who have been divorced for 17 years and neither of whom have *ever* lived at this address.. i'm thinking the "mr & mrs" part is just an assumption on their part.. from time to time i get mail address to my father (blue cross solicitations, etc), but he has never used my address as his own and has never lived here.. any suggestions as to just how the local cong would get his name and my address on their mailing list??????.

My JW little sister sends letters/emails to surviving relatives that she finds in obituaries...I guess she mails them to wherever you're advised to send flowers, maybe? (Yes, I realize this is SICK.)

I used to be, which is why I only lurked and never registered/posted for a couple years. Didn't register a username here until after my real name already became über-public. Now, of course, it's a huge relief...just not having to care anymore.

Anybody know anything about Scooters?
by Terry ini have never ridden/driven a motorcycle or a scooter.
but, i'm thinking about getting one.. in fact, a chinese scooter!.

I used to own a scooter and a motorcycle (both Hondas, both ran forever, never had a problem). The scooter got about 65-75 mpg, motorcycle got 50 mpg. Liked the motorcycle more because it could go faster (safer on the freeway) and felt less flimsy than the scooter. Scooter is probably safer around town and surface streets. If you need to go on highways for any reason, the slight dip in gas mileage for a motorcycle is still worth it.
Scooters do take less time to learn to drive than motorcycles, because they tend to be automatic. But I took a CHP course to learn to ride my motorcycle and it was two weekends, about 5 hours per day. After that it becomes rote. It's a lot like driving a stick shift car in theory, but your hands and feet are doing different things.
Also had a friend who had a moped. It got 150 mpg. Con was that it only went about 35-40 miles per hour, even with only one person on it (add a second and it gets even slower). Again, nice if you just need it to get around town on surface streets. Not freeway legal, though.
I love Vespas, though I've never ridden one. But when buying bikes, I tend to stick with Honda since I've had such a good experience with them. No oil leaks, breakdowns, mechanical issues, nothing.

All of you should start a splinter JW group..
by fortbethel inforgive me if this comes off as harsh,.
i've read & read many posts here mostly very negative.

I'm an atheist. And it's not because of the Watchtower or JWs, it's because I've done my research and came to that conclusion independently. Why would I want to start a splinter group? Seems like that would make me as phony as Charles Taze Russell or L. Ron Hubbard.
Anything the Watchtower offers "worth hanging on to" (i.e., "hey, war kinda sucks, doesn't it?") can be believed and practiced without the need for a fringe group to lay down the law.
Many people here are angry because they've been hurt, and some of them will go on being angry for a long time, and that's their right. Anger has been the motivating force behind nearly every social issues/civil rights movement that has ever brought about change and progress. It can be a positive thing and a force for change. Who are you to stand in the way of that? If you're not angry, good for you. Go on not being angry. But where the fuck do you get off telling people who have lost their families and friends to "get over it, move on, get a life, losers!" I don't agree with everybody here's attitude or approach or philosophy...but they'll heal in their own due time, or maybe they won't at all. But as long as they're not harming anybody or infringing upon anybody's civil rights, it's none of my goddamn business, or yours, to dictate whose feelings are or are not valid.

National Anthem
by stuckinamovement ini was reading an article about some guy who refused to stand for the national anthem on 911 at the jets cowboy game.
here is the question..... why can witness kids stand respectfully for the flag salute, but not the national anthem?
direction is given that for the national anthem you must remain seated unless you are already standing.

The way it was explained to me, when I was a kid, was that for the flag salute, it was not considered "participation" if you just stood (which was a sign of respect without participation)...you actually had to have your hand over your heart and be reciting the pledge to be actively participating.
However, for the national anthem, it could be considered "actively participating" just to stand, because there's no other required gesture such as placing your hand over your heart.
I was encouraged to try to get up and go to the bathroom a few minutes before the anthem to avoid the issue altogether, since people tend to get pissed off at you and consider it disrespectful to remain seated.

Florida Pastor Doesnt Get Why Atheists Arent Registered Like Sex Offenders
by fallen_princess ini thought this was so insanely stupid that it made it funny, so i had to share.
living in "the bible belt", i meet people with this sort of mentality all the time but this guy takes the cake!
let's all applaud this guy for reaching new lows in his preachy narrow-mindedness that it was barely interesting enough that a reporter was desperate enough for a story wrote about it.. http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2011/08/florida_pastor_asks_why_atheis.html.

Oh, good. And when he and his Tea Party buddies take over, people like me will be forced to stitch scarlet A's on our clothing. And then it's off to the "work camps". (For our own protection, naturally.)
