To go along with their own illustration of the physician, why would I listen to a doctor to MAY have a medical degree? Before I agreed to follow his advise, I better be pretty darn well sure he is qualified to give it. Not so with elders apparently, Jehovah may be using them, or maybe not. But be a good little submissive Witness and do as they say anyway. Yeah, right.

June 15th WT ( again) JW's told " Elders are Imperfect " Give them a Break
by flipper inthis is one subject that really annoyed me when i was a jehovah's witness - and i find it still annoys me after being out 7 years from the jw's.
the title of this jw only wt study article is " have regard for those who are working hard among you ".
in my opinion there always seemed to be a double standard in which rank and file publishers were always told to be patient with elders shortcomings - however if rank and file publishers slipped up - elders would be into admonishing and disciplining them like flies attracted to dung with no delay.

Memorial musings
by undercover inthings i thought about during the memorial talk last night:.
i don't know if it was just the memorial i went to or if this was across the board, but it seems that the talk was dumbed down a bit more than it had been in the past.
not that it wouldn't surprise me if was dumbed down.

At 12 minutes in, our speaker was all done talking about Jesus, and that's including the opening song and prayer! From that point on, it was all about the anointed. It's such a joke to advertise this fiasco as memorializing Jesus.

Just came from the meeting. Everyone sang the last song with gusto! Wonder how long that will last? Most likely, this article will be forgotten by the next meeting and everyone will be back to stumbling through the WT's musical mess.

CO's putting the screws on elder bodies, and ministerial servants to auxilliary pioneer this April.
by miseryloveselders ini have such a love/hate, 50/50 relationship with this organization any more, but a letter was read to the elders and ministerial servants that has pushed me to the 30/70 range in favor of hate, if even momentarily.
most of you if not all are aware of the auxilliary pioneering initiative for this upcoming april.
it's no secret that i'm not real fond of pioneering as its unscriptural for one thing.

It always irritates me how every year they push pioneering in April, and this year more than most with their 30 hour allowance. For most people, you are cooped up all winter with the short days and freezing temperatures, and now you can finally get out to enjoy the sunshine, plant a garden, work in your yard, whatever. But, nooooo. JW's must spend every April weekend jammed into a car, riding around with people they could care less about, and knock on empty doors. Why can't they let the r&f even enjoy spring without a guilt trip?
Oh yeah, I forgot, they don't care.

1/1/11 WT Using One Myth to Support Another
by WalkTall ini thought this was pretty hysterical and something that i would have never noticed before i woke up.
in the jan 1 wt under the heading 'was the garden of eden a real place?
part of the reasoning they use as to why no one could find the garden of eden even though there are specifics in genesis identifying it's location is because "the flood of noah's day may have altered the topography in ways that we simply cannot know today".

With this footnote added: The Deluge, an act of God, evidently wiped out all traces of the garden of Eden itself.
Evidently, of course.

Writing Style of WTBTS
by Band on the Run inwitness literature has never had a nice flow to it.
a family member was a maoist and had these perfect english pamphlets prepared by a foreign government.
the grammar was perfect.

A few years ago, during one of my "I need to be more theocratic" stages, I vowed to read every WT and Awake from cover to cover. It lasted one month. I felt like I was insulting my own intelligence while I was reading it, plus it was downright depressing with all the emphasis on how bad the world is. And that was even before I woke up.

Examples of how indoctrination, belief, cognitive dissonance, and confirmation bias work with cult members
by Mad Sweeney inconfirmation bias and cognitive dissonance have been discussed here and elsewhere quite a lot (if you're unfamiliar, google them).
we all use confirmation bias to some extent to reaffirm ourselves and our beliefs, and cognitive dissonance is something we all have to deal with, but cult members who have been indoctrinated with thought-reform (aka mind control) techniques display these in predictable ways when you know what you're looking for.. below are two scenarios and a cult member's interpretation of the events.
notice the belief that the cult is "the truth" is always reinforced by the member's interpretation of events, even when those events seem to be totally opposite.. scenario one.

A 'worldly' corporation, is having cash flow problems due to the economic climate, and lays off hundreds of workers. They are selfish, materialistic, disloyal, uncaring, and greedy, part of Satan's system.
The WT corporation is having cash flow problems due to the economic climate, and dismisses hundreds of workers. Isn't it wonderful how efficient Bethel is run and how they make sure the donations are used in the best possible way? And what a blessing that these full-time Bethelites now get to enjoy pioneering and working in the field.
Ugh, I feel sick now.

Got a letter “inviting” me to my Judicial hearing- should I go?
by hoggieman inhey everyone, my family and i have not gone to meeting in over a year.
rumors have swirled about us, but i have always dodged the elders calls and never said anything about my feelings.
so after a while the calls/visits dwindled, but in october they came by again and saw our halloween decorations.

Just reading this thread makes me feel like I'm living in some altered universe. Potential heartache, lawyers fees, and family discord over a pumpkin and fall displays? It is insanity that they do not see the pettiness of their actions. Today on the news an American tourist was stabbed to death in Israel and at least 28 people, including 13 children, were killed in Mexico from an oil explosion believed to be caused by theives stealing oil. But yet, in their view, their God is so concerned that someone has pumpkins on their porch, that they are going to banish him over it. OMG, how can they be so blind?

when will i taste freedom?
by Evidently Apostate infor all those that have been able to rescue thier loved ones from this religion the feeling of freedom and security must feel incredible no matter what outside influence attacks you it must be easier to fend off with a family united.
i am not one of those situations and i am always dancing around the truth about the truth with my wife.
she can turn on the blinders and question me and level blanket statements like" you dont belive in an armageddon" or "your a completely different person than you were a year ago".

EA, I am in the same position as you except that it is my husband that is still the believer. It is an emotional roller coaster. Sometimes, he agrees with some of the comments I make about the WTS or the Bible, and I feel a glimmer of hope. Then he retreats right back into the cult mentality. Basically, even though he sees the faults of the organization, he doesn't see it's harm. He still thinks that, all in all, it's a beneficial way to live. And I understand where he is coming from. He has never had a close relative/friend get df'd nor been faced with anything involving the blood issue. And having never read, as I have, the tragic stories of families ripped apart by this religion, he cannot see it from the other side. So, to him, what's the harm in remaining a JW? There are days I deal with it all just fine, then there are days when I wonder how the hell this has happened to me. How did I willingly walk into something so dangerous, and worse yet, raise my children in it? Today is one of the bad days, filled with regret and sadness.
I am so thankful for this board. It helps to know that I am not alone.
