Atheists..... throwing the baby out with the bath water ?
by snare&racket inthis saying permeates this forum with higher frequency than most.
despite being an open atheist amongst lots of religious people in my life, i have never been accused of doing this and i have never heard this saying attributed to my choice... appart from here.. i thought it would be best to clarify why i (and i assume others) decided to leave the bible behind after leaving the wt society.. realising the wt society was wrong desroyed my world, for me it meant so much.
i had given so much to it too, it just had to be true!

and I quote...again...
“Do not think that I came to bring peace on Earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household"
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple."
You can interpret it all you like but someone else will interpret it differently, or not at all - like people who hear the voices 'kill your parents' or 'kill your children' and they'd be justified in saying 'it's what Jesus said in the bible'.
...just sayin' and I'm feeling all bratty today (heads up)

That's what it means.
But that's not what he said...

So Tec, I'm curious - why would Jesus say in order to follow him you must hate your mother, father etc. if he wanted it to be interpreted? That's a black and white statement and he wasn't quoted as qualifiying that statement and prefaced it by saying this: “Do not think that I came to bring peace on Earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household". It's possible to twist this to mean something else but it doesn't change the fact that if you believe he said it then he meant it, no?
And every prayer of yours has been answered? Every one? Really?
I think it gets a wee bit dangerous when you try to explain that you believe some parts of the bible based on Christ and can discard other parts based on Christ because it leads people like me to pick that apart a little.

Luke 14:26 - If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
Did Jesus say this? I know the WT spin on this verse and the dance they do around the word 'hate' but it's there, so what's your take?
Matthew 7:7,8 - Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
What about this one? Everyone who prays knows that this isn't true but did Jesus say it?

One of the biggest problems I have with belief in a higher power is the viewing one's own accomplishments. When someone achieves something or uses their talents or makes something of themselves, they're expected to right away thank god so as to appear 'humble' when really they were the ones who made that happen but to acknowledge that and give oneself a pat on the back is considered arrogant. (somehow claiming that you're favored by god isn't arrogant however)
Flip side is the same thing, if a person has made bad, short sighted choices and found themselves in a difficult place, instead of blaming god, they should recognize their mistakes and work on fixing whatever it is in them that leads them to those bad decisions.
Either way, for good or for bad, we are responsible for our choices.

This is a simple question but one I hope someone will respond to without saying " delusion'.
I was a born in and prayed to Jehovah all my life. I felt at times I received answers to my prayers. I often felt a strong connection to God and even felt that silver cord that many talk about. I felt a powerful sense of peace and sense of direction many times. It helped me get through many hard times. So what was happening if God does not exist ? Where did all that peace and sense of direction in my life come from?
How about giving yourself credit for working out what was best for you and listening to that positive part of you instead of giving into negative thinking?
