Hi Paul, I'm not usually given to public gushing but I honestly felt that I needed to in this case.

I'm so sorry that your relationship with your mother has been hijacked by their shameful shunning practices. I completely sympathize – my mother hasn’t spoken to me in over a year and my sister decided to run ahead of the organization; I haven’t talked to her in over 5 years (I was df’d just over 4 years ago). We all used to be very close and it makes me sad when I think about my situation and sadder still when I think about the sheer volume of people dealing with the same circumstance...it's mind blowing. I still hold out hope that one day we’ll all be able to rebuild our broken relationships. I’m sorry also for the pressures you must have felt to consider taking down the site…please indulge my selfishness when I say that I’m so glad you didn’t.

Thanks to the facts so well presented on your site, as well as the fellowship on this one, I have really started speaking out against JW doctrine to people and it feels damn good!!

Thanks once again and keep up the good work – it’s thanks to people like you that the real truth can get out there.

It's truly amazing to me that I sat there for all of those years and hardly ever questioned anything. There were some things I'd hear from the platform that would make me go 'huh, what now?' and I regret not using my own thinking abilities to question further. A lot of times I'd slough things off because of who was saying them, like 'wow, he's off his meds today' or 'there he goes again' without reasoning at the spirit behind the words. One time a few years ago Gerrit Losch came to our congregation and gave a few talks during the week (cuz he's so special you know) and wow did he ever piss me off...I really should have known something was seriously wrong then...

The thing I love about Paul's site is exactly what chickpea and lepermessiah said - no hyperbole, just straight facts using WT literature.

Mary, you're so right about how we research better than when we were in. Critical thinking skills are so COOL!

Zoiks, you're bang on - this is a shoutout to everyone on this site as well. What a diverse, interesting bunch of intelligent people here!! I find myself getting lost in threads that are presented and written with care and loving the deep subject matter. The fact that so many have a snappy sense of humor makes it entertaining as well. This site is ADDICTIVE!!!!

I’m sure this has been mentioned many times on this site but I wanted to express my personal feelings of gratitude to Paul at jwfacts.com. Paul, your site changed my life. Even though I discovered it when I was already disfellowshipped and really didn’t have the intention of going back, I was still a fierce JW apologist. Needless to say, this caused me to be at war with myself and I was grappling with those two sides of my brain. It was roughly a year ago that I stumbled across your site and light bulbs started clicking and flashing all over me.

I have one sister along with my mother still pounding away at the JW salt mines so they never talk to me but my other sister has been out for almost 30 years (faded) and even she had never researched the destructive history of the witnesses. It was one evening (before finding your site) that I happened to mention that the rule against organ donation had changed (way back) – she was shocked; I guess my mom didn't feel the need to fill her in on that, and that led to me updating her in on other changes in doctrine which led to me finding your site. We spent a couple of afternoons reading all of your research. It was such an eye opener and I find myself referring back there frequently.

Paul, thank you so much for all of the hard work that went into compiling that information. It must not have been easy and I take my hat off to you for caring enough about the rest of us to put it all together. It’s truly a labor of love.

If there are any newbies or fence-sitters out there who haven’t yet found this site please look it up and be amazed.

Were You Afraid To Talk Out Loud For Fear The Demons Might Hear You?

i know of many witnesses that were petrified that if they spoke about something out loud, the demons.

i swear jws think the demons.

I remember thinking that I should be afraid, but I don't remember ever actually being afraid - they never seemed real to me.

I do remember being in service with a friend of mine and we used to speculate if the angels watching over us found our jokes funny, then fly up to tell other angels the joke. And that's about as real as it got for me...

Great review, as always.
I especially enjoyed this comment: Unmarried women have no status in the congregation. Married sisters only want to hang out with other married sisters. Married sisters are afraid that this lonely single sisters will make a grab for their husbands.

Where are the WT comments that people in the congregation invite these single sisters over for a meal or to study the WT? Why can't she invite people over? See the comment above--include that the elders are nervous when a group of single people of both sexes socialize.

Having been single, married then divorced as a witness I can completely attest to this. My single life was great - I was young, there were a lot of us young singles having all kinds of small to medium sized social gatherings and there always seemed to be something happening. Then marriage - lots of dinner parties and again a great social circle. Then divorce...the big D - all of a sudden, the friends I had when I was single were either married or weren't interested in hanging out with a divorcee (after all, the single brother quotient was always at the forefront and there's no way they'd stand any competition from someone who 'had their chance'), then all of a sudden my married friends weren't as interested in having me around as much either. When people are used to seeing you as a couple, they have a hard time understanding where you place in their lives. I still had some friends, don't get me wrong, but the social world I was used to underwent a drastic and depressing change.

I know that this same thing happens the world over, among witnesses and non-witnesses, but you'd think that a concerted effort to be 'no part of the world' would apply here with the JW's. They are, after all, supposed to look after one another so that there's no temptation to leave....gee oh well, I guess it's not that important after all!!

Mill Hill Disfellowshippings

a few months ago there was a thread about a couple of elders at the mill hill bethel being disfellowshipped because they disagreed with some wt doctrine (i can't recall exactly what it was) and that several other betheliteswere under 'investigation'.

i haven't heard anything since, does anyone know anything more about this?.

Paulapollos, I can’t agree with you more with your take on Jehovah’s personality. Personally, I’ve ceased to believe in the god of the bible – for me, that personage is no more realistic than the gods invented by the ancient Greeks or Romans. At least they divvied up those personalities into multiple gods whereas the OT god suffers from a severe case of multiple personality disorder. That god is primarily fear-inspiring and proud of it – to me, that appeals only to the most negative and primal aspects of the human condition and I personally find that very difficult to respect or have any faith in.

I also believe that due to belief in this god of the bible, a lot of judgmental and negative behavior is sanctioned and applauded - not only among the witnesses but society in general. Needless to say, since my JW exit a few years ago my beliefs have undergone a metamorphosis and it’s an ongoing process.

while you were a witness, did you ever play the what if game?

i would occasionally sit with my friends and wed bandy the ideas around...if we werent born in would we be interested if someone knocked at our door...would we want to go to college...would we be promiscuous.... it was interesting to hear the responses and i think about that now.

one thing i always knew was that if someone knocked at my door a) chances are i wouldnt answer and b) although i would be polite, i would not have any interest whatsoever.

In a way, I think it's kind of reassuring that a lot of us imagined life on the outside. For me, I think it means that despite the mind control and cult aspects, even back then my true self showed signs of breaking through - maybe I'm looking for hope that my former friends still on the inside will one day break away and start thinking for themselves more often.
