When anyone can own an automatic weapon then massacres using automatic weapons happen. Whilst banning weapons like this will not stop all violence it will have an impact. The statistics show that where bans have been put in place the proportion of deaths due to guns reduce as a result. Sometimes personal rights need to be mitigated by personal responsibilities and acting for the greater good.

Is New Zealand right to ban military style guns?
by ThomasCovenant inin response to the recent terrorist attack in new zealand their government is proposing to ban semi automatic and military style weaponry.. do you agree with this idea?.
would they be better off allowing more of these weapons instead?.
would it be better to perhaps allow more of the muslim community for example, to be armed with semi automatic guns to protect themselves at their places of worship?.

I was 10 and spent the whole year in terror because my grandparents and father were not witnesses and I really believed they would die. I was so happy when 1976 came around.

Family is now reaping what they sowed and they don't like it.
by Gemmel ini resigned from the jw's in my 20's over 30 years ago, i was immediately shunned by my entire family and it's remained that way with a few exceptions ever since.
one of those exceptions was being contacted by a cousin a few years back and during that conversation i discovered that my mother had been and still was the prime mover in my complete and continuing shunning.
i then used what contacts i had left to confirm it.

It is a tragedy of their own making. They would happily take your money but there would be no change in circumstances. They would have been financially off the hook but this would not mean you were back in the family.
I am glad you have made the most of your life it is a hard road with no family support.

Today we celebrate our 30th Wedding anniversary and my sons 16th birthday. I feel privileged to be able to show my appreciation and love for both the men in my life without feeling guilt. We left in 2009 as a family and have not regretted the choice. It has been fun discovering our new normal and deciding what we celebrate. It has made life more enjoyable and surprising.
Life is better when we are free to be who we are rather than who someone else wants us to be.

What immodest clothing have you got in trouble for wearing?
by Addison0998 ini personally have a very distinct sense of style and fashion which many of the fellow jdubs frown upon.
recently, i was told by a few specially self righteous ones that i looked like a prostitute in a pair of white boots!
a pair of 3 inch heeled, just a little taller than the ankle boots, with skirt that came down to my knees and a black long sleeve shirt that came up to my collarbone.

Once we were invited to an elders house or a get together and we dressed casually I wore a tshirt and trousers. I later found out the Elders wife had expected everyone to wear meeting clothes and she was appalled at my choice of outfit. What was worse she told everyone how badly dressed I had been without actually speaking to me about it. I wouldn't have minded if there had been a suggested dress code in the invite. It is such a petty thing to b fixated on.
Since leaving and purging my wardrobe I have discovered I don't like wearing meeting clothes and I wear T shirt and trousers a lot.

Sisters handling mic's
by I Faded Twice ini saw a topic on another forum where a sister was supposedly carrying the mics.
i was curious if this was even possible?
is it new light or just a lie?.

The general rule is that sisters can do things if all other options have been exhausted. Nowadays if a congregation didn't have enough brothers to do the male roles the congregation would be divided up and the hall sold.

Do KHs lock their doors when meeting starts now?
by NikL inmy still in wife informed me this morning that she must be on time to the meeting as they are locking the door when it starts now.. i said that's crazy.
she said it's because of the times we are living in.. we live in a rural area and crime isn't terrible though it's worse than it used to be.. i told her if that's the way it is then why bother leaving the house at all?.
she said they are just trying to be safe.. is this a thing now?

I think it is sad that this is even a thing. Having had a child with special needs I would have hated being in a building where late arrivers had to ring a bell to get in. Churches are open during services generally so locking doors undermines the idea that this is a public meeting and that non witnesses are welcome.

Jehovah’s Witness dating rules
by Addison0998 ini’m sorry that i talk about dating a lot, i know it is probably very annoying, but you don’t have to read it.
but did anyone else have the most difficult time dating as a young jw?
me and my boyfriend have been dating for a year in half, we are in our early 20’s, and we are still not allowed to hold hands, cuddle or kiss.

In the old youth book it was suggested that dates take place in public places such as museums and galleries. That way you can be with your boyfriend but not alone. It is ridiculous that you have no opportunity to discuss things that will be important to you both. IT is also ridiculous that you can not spend time in each others company. There are many people outside the organisation who go on adult dates which don't end in sex. If you want to stand by the principles of no sex before marriage that is up to you however do not let this fear of doing something wrong mean that you end up marrying someone to have sex and failing to ensure that this person is someone you can truly be your partner in life.
