does this trouble anyone?.
it seems semantic tom-foolery to declare a war on terrorism, and then to say that prisoners of the war are not prisoners of war.. it also seems very suspect keeping them of proper usa soil, as where they are they are out of sight, mind, or appeal by civil-rights factions.. do not get me wrong.. i am not saying, "ah, poor ickle terrorists".. but in a war against terror, surely taking each and every opportunity to distance yourself from your enemies is the wisest and best course of action?.
why do anything that is even remotely dodgy or underhand?.
Hello just a quick post here to make a few points:
Americans are interested in justice not vengeance. If we were interested in vengeance we would have left the Al Qeada members to die in Afghanistan or just simply nuked the county; America did neither.
As far as international law honestly Americans do not care much about international law, sorry to inform you. Many Americans see international law as an attempt of other countries to impede on our sovereignty; basically other countries trying to dictate to us how we should conduct our business. The prisoners will not be beaten or starved or hooked up to batteries not because we are conforming to international law but because we are Americans. Do you really think that the prisoners are going to be subjected to violence of their life or person by the Americans? Or do you think that maybe Bush is working with an unprecedented situation and is being very careful with what he does and does not declare someone looking at the legal consequences in the long term? For example look at John Walker and how long it took for them to charge him with a crime. Why do you think Bush took so long? I think it was because the government is being very careful to examine all the consequences of their actions. I don’t know if you can really understand this living in a different county but the American legal system can tend to run amuck so basically I see all these delays in declaring a status as just a way to buy time until the government figures out what the best way to deal with these people is.
Personally I think Bush should declare them POW’s but I also am not losing any sleep over the fact he did not.

P.S. To make it easy for all you people to cut and paste the one comment from my post you will respond to I will but it down here for you all:

Cellmond,
I don’t believe that the people being held in Cuba are Afghani; I think they are the foreign Arab members of Al Quada (sp?) who were pretty much aware that they were engaged in a holy war against the US. A holy war that justifies that targeting of civilians with weapons of mass destruction.

I think there is a fundamental question that is being missed here.
Do foreign nationals (non-citizens, non-long-term residents) have the same constitutional freedoms and protections as citizens? Personally I feel no they do not; the constitution was written to protect the rights of American citizens and them only. That’s why John Walker is being tried in a civilian court and not in a tribunal he is getting his constitutional protections due him as a citizen.
If an individual foreign national was to rob a bank in America or even commit a murder than yes they should have a civilian trial and be afforded all the rights that citizens have; but when an organization begins to make good on threats of conducting a war on America I see that as an entirely different situation.

My favorite varies with time; I rarely pick the same candy twice. My most frequent selection however would have to be reese’s peanut butter cups or butter fingers.

since we have so many right-leaning politically speaking posters, i was wondering what comments they might be willing to offer up on this column i caught this morning.. http://www.observer.com/pages/conason.asp.
i am sure most of those who are quick to criticize anything that even remotely relates to clinton are all whitewater experts by now.
i would enjoy reading what thoughts you may have on the parallels and even how enron makes whitewater look like a trip to the penny candy store.. hoping some conservative can help me feel less screwed by my republican administration,.
Hello all,
I am not sure what teejay’s comment was but I will add some to this debate.
It appears that Enron execs did indeed ‘cook the books’ in an attempt to hide the financial state of the company primarily to sell off their stock before the crash. In this case the accountants and managers in charge will be, and should be, tried for fraud.
The Bush connection is basically non-existant. Enron did donate to both republicans and democrats however when Enron went to the government looking for a bailout both parties balked and left them in their lurch. A case for corruption or favoritism would be stronger if Bush or the republicans actually did anything to help Enron out.

how do you feel about the killing of people in war ?especially those who do not share you ideals and there fore may encroach on your rights if they had authority over you?.
most of us having been witnesses would have justified opposers of god dying at armageddon because we believed they if left alive would ruin life for everyone else.. so if a political party or another nation gained power other you country that acted contrary to your beliefs to such a degree you though they would ruin or life or life style would you kill them in war?
War is legalized killing not murder; they are two separate words. Anyway some countries attempt to fight wars in a way that minimizes the unavoidable civilian deaths; America is a very good example.
Anyway I would agree that war is horrible and should be avoided whenever possible the real question is when is war avoidable? And what would the consequences be if way is avoided?
Was it moral for Neville Chamberlain to attempt to appease Hitler to buy a temporary peace? Was it immoral for Assad of Syria to destroy Hama killing thousands of innocents to attempt to avert a long and deadlier civil war?
Life is complicated and I don’t believe black and white exists anymore.

take a look at this link and find out what they are planning to do to this ancient forest.. http://headwaters-ef.enviroweb.org/about_hw-ef.html.
Ok, this thread was about a forest that exist in northern California so if you want to save this forest you can use California law, that’s why I brought it up. Actually everything in this thread seemed to be directed at America by you, you then started to lose the argument so you changed the frame.
