So much for Watchtower, er, Bible studies
by dgp inon another thread, i wondered whether there was an objective way to determine the effect that the internet is having on new people being attracted into the watchtower.
i get the general impression that, while we can certainly know that the internet has been crucial in quite a few people leaving, or never joining, there is no statistics that would tell us something like "millions now living didn't join because of what they read on a website".. that's for background.
now i would like to see the question the other way around.

*** km 5/92 p. 2 Service Meetings for May ***
15 min: Protect Yourself From Apostasy. Discussion between an elder and a publisher seated at a table. Publisher explains that he met someone in service who has been reading apostate literature. Publisher tells elder he feels householder was sincere in questions he raised. Publisher refused householder's offer of apostate publication but would like to try to answer householder's questions. Elder commends publisher for his good attitude and actions. Rather than discuss what apostates have written or said, it is wise to concentrate on Scriptural viewpoint of matters as set forth in Reasoning book. Elder invites publisher to open his Reasoning book, and together they review pages 34-7. Discussion should be warm and encouraging as they consider definition of apostasy, each bold subhead, and selected key texts as time permits. Conclude discussion with positive comments on all the upbuilding and encouraging material we have available for study. Share upbuilding message with householder. If he is sincere, he will see difference between the positive approach of truth and the negative, critical approach of apostates. By our rejecting apostate thinking and material, we display our loyalty to Jehovah and to his visible organization.

participant awareness
by Nickolas ini've recently been involved in a thread in which one of the participants, member of this board since april last year and who has made over 1200 posts, had not been aware of the 1975 failure.
isn't that unusual?
it tells me that this board is inefficient at getting the message out.

It's a Child Molestor Paradise
by Cthulhu inin chapter 7 of the new elder book, page 98, a subpoint of paragraph 20, dealing with the matter of reproof, it is written "the judicial committee may have specific reasons to believe that the congregation needs to be on guard concerning the repentant wrongdoer.
perhaps he ignored previous counsel several times concerning steps leading to the same wrongdoing.
for example, in a case involving wrongdoing that could be viewed as child sexual abuse, announcing the reproof of a repentant wrongdoer will serve as a protection for the congregation.".

*** w09 11/15 pp. 6-7 par. 19 What Do Your Prayers Say About You? ***
19 When we are being represented in public prayer, we need to display reverential "fear of God." (1 Pet. 2:17) There may be a proper time and place for some actions that would be inappropriate at a Christian meeting. (Eccl. 3:1) For instance, suppose someone sought to have all in a group link arms or hold hands during such a prayer. This might offend or distract some, including visitors who do not share our beliefs. Some marriage mates might discreetly hold hands, but if they embraced each other during public prayer, those who got a glimpse of such conduct might be stumbled. They might think or get the impression that the couple was focusing on their romantic relationship instead of reverence for Jehovah. Out of deep respect for him, let us therefore "do all things for God's glory" and avoid conduct that could distract, shock, or stumble anyone.-1 Cor. 10:31, 32; 2 Cor. 6:3.

More info that may not matter but I found interesting:
ALVARADO ESTATES COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER
In the 1930's, William Heath, an heir to the Coca-Cola fortune, owned the land that would be Alvarado Estates. Heath and his wife Bonnie were strict Jehovah's Witnesses (JW) They believed their leader's teachings that Armageddon was imminent. Along with other adherents, they did not salute the American flag nor serve in the military, because their allegiance only was to God,.
Heath allowed his fellow JW members clandestine use of his land. It was patrolled by men on horseback and children of the area were kept away. A productive farm flourished there with fruit trees and other crops fed by their own water well. Their main house, Beth Sham, was constructed with thirteen-inch-thick walls and a concrete basement shelter. It has since been remodeled, but the house still exists at 4825 Avion Way. The original road leading to the house can still be seen running up the canyon as one drives along Montezuma Road.
Near the house, stood a barn and corral. Years later, when some of the property was being sold, a strange thing was found. Inside a cupboard in the barn was a rope. When the rope was pulled, the entire wall moved aside revealing a stairway. Beneath the ground was a concrete shelter about 10‘ x 40' with a vaulted ceiling and barred transom-like window. It had a generator, diesel fuel tanks, cupboards for food, and a well. The shelter was prepared for the Great Armageddon that didn‘t come. When the original buildings were torn down, the concrete shelter could not be destroyed and is still located beside the home at 5330 Le Barron Road where it became a wine cellar and studio.
In 1942, when Judge Rutherford, JW leader and Bonnie Heath's childhood guardian, died, William Heath applied for a permit to bury him in our area. The request was denied by the San Diego County Planning Commission and the body was presumed sent to its alternate burial site on Staten Island, New York. Rumor has it that Judge Rutherford's body never did leave our area.... Look for The History of Alvarado Estates, Chapter III: Gillies Field, in your next newsletter.
