  A Korean Tragedy

  the modern history is full of deep, dark tragedies.

  and, my intention, as i sat down to write of those tragedies for a fb page i look after for a macquarie university student society, was to tell the story of these very dark contemporary events.

  but east asia history is complex and i think its helpful to try to have an overview of that history to understand what has happened in the recent past.

  Do They Still do Door-to-Door as Much as Before?

  since the advent of the trolleys do the majority of jws still go door to door like we used to?.

  do they still have meetings for field service on sat mornings and sun afternoons where most head off to the local territory while one or two go to do trolley work or has the importance of door to door work reduced?.

  with the reduction of printing wts and awakes what will they offer at the doors?.

  I often see 4 or even 6 JWs standing in the vicinity of a cart. Total waste of time!

  Even when you go up and take a magazine off the trolley it's like none of them want to be the one who has to talk to anybody.

  2017 Annual Meeting

  this just in from the 2017 annual meeting:.

  1. watchtowers and awakes won't be released regularly, at least three watchtower and awakes per year.

  6 magazines a year.. 2. a new book is being released: remain in god's love, more of an update like how they did for the what does the bible really teach book.

  The Watchtower's Real Crisis

  when discussing the watchtowers financial problems, i've generally been of the opinion that they probably are not in a real financial crisis.

  i've come to believe that money may be something of an issue, but its wrapped up in a much larger problem.

  this came to me this morning when reading about the annual meeting.. i think the society's leadership is just plain out of ideas.

  JeffT I agree. They really have nothing more to say.

  Russell said in his will that no more books were ever to be published after his death but that the Watchtower should continue to be published by committee until the imminent end.

  Nobody foresaw having to say the same things over and over again for more than a century.

  Loyal JWs will hope there is an intelligent strategy behind all of this. I doubt there is. I think SBF was right, "it's all over bar the shouting."

  october 10th is korean workers party founding day which happens to overlap with columbus day on monday next week.. many of nks previous missile tests have taken place on auspicious dates.

  russia’s ria news agency is reporting that according to anton morozov, a member of the russian lower house of parliament’s international affairs committee "they are preparing for new tests of a long-range missile.

  they even gave us mathematical calculations that they believe prove that their missile can hit the west coast of the united states,” .

  I fear atomant is right.

  China has began to cooperate with UN sanctions. Despite its political doctrine of "Juche" (self-reliance) NK depends on China for most of its fuel as well as food aid.

  China is in a difficult position. If the NK regime collapses it will be faced with millions of refugees on its border. China will also be less than enthusiastic about any prospect of reunification if it led to American bases in a former DPRK.

  If a long-range test does happen next week it will be interesting to see how Trump responds.

  Does Morality Exist?

  Fisherman - At last we get to the actual meaning of your thread.

  You think that unless right and wrong is based on the dictates of your deity, and unless our actions lead to eternal rewards or punishments there is no point in being moral.

  It always amazes me when believers attempt to make this point. Is it only your superstitious beliefs that keep you from murder, rape and theft?

  All of us avoid harm and desire things that contribute to our welfare and pleasure. These are not simply social constructs they are objective realities. Living in a certain way contributes to the quality of our lives and those of others.

  All day every day we do things that are of only temporary value. We clean our homes, tend our gardens, paint the fence and wash the car even though all of these efforts are quickly undone. They make our lives better. Being concerned about the wellbeing of others - who likewise respect our interests - also contributes to the quality of our lives. To do otherwise would lead to dystopia.

  The instincts that underpin our moral decisions are a result of evolution. Far from being a "gimmick" they have made it possible for us to prosper as a social species. Despite all our failings our achievements are astonishing.

  translation"energy saving speil" = sales talk by somebody trying to get you to switch electricity providers"dodging the big issue dude" = trying to avoid the man selling the magazine for homeless people"switching sides to be baked by the talk talk folk" = crossing the street only to be harassed by the telephone company salespeople"the johos outside the old tiser building" = the jws outside the old newspaper office.
