JWs & Scientology
by APieceOfShitNamedTate ini've been trying to learn more about how scientology works in regard to how they investigate, interrogate, and discipline their members, and how similar their methods are to jehovah's witnesses.
i am currently pimo, and while i have never faced a judicial committee, the elders have tried to investigate me.
i won't go into detail, but basically it was just a case of me not wanting to reach out like they wanted me to.

a Chicago Tribune investigative journalist went on a hunt to find proof that God was myth
He should have had a chat with me. I could have saved him some time.
To be fair nobody can prove there is no god as long as we are vague about the meaning of 'god'. What we can prove beyond all reasonable doubt is that the god of christian theism does not exist.
Having said that, I think the standard of debate on both sides leaves a lot to be desired.

Do old time present day active JW`s genuinely believe in overlapping generations ?
by smiddy3 infor the life of me i can not come to terms with old timers in the "truth" who could swallow this interpretation of scripture about an overlapping generation .. when jesus spoke about "this generation" .
are their any real bible students among younger ones any more ?.
here are 3 bible scriptures that confirm a generation is approximately 40- 50 years long give or take a few years .. 1. matt:1 :17 abraham born 2016-18 bc jesus born 2 bc approx.

Tenacious - Despite all the world's woes we are living in the best time in human history.
Even allowing for the two world wars there has never been a safer or more peaceful time to be alive. By every possible measure of crime, conflict, disease, education, freedom, poverty, famine etc etc things have never been better.
Please name the decade in which you would have preferred to live.
This sense of angst is the sine qua non of the religious mindset.

no one is claiming that Jesus raised himself from the dead - Ratty
Yes they are. You should go back and read the thread.
Should they go unchallenged? - Half banana
As you know I frequently challenge theism. Have any posters been more active in doing so?
I just think that if a topic is starting from an assumption of the basics of xtian faith and wanting to discuss a particular doctrine from scripture they should be allowed to do that. We are in danger of creating a political and anti-religious monoculture on the forum.
Why would anybody bother talking in an echo chamber?

Corruptgirl - a search of WT index for Luke 12:48 might throw up some more interesting references about the need for elders to be held to a higher standard.

Stan - How do you think it could be done if it is a hoax? An actor that looks and sounds exactly right? If anybody was going to those lengths surely the dialogue would be far more damning.

Excellent summary of the principles. Thank you.
Can I add one more?
'Everyone to whom much was given, much will be demanded of him, and the one who was put in charge of much will have more than usual demanded of him.' - Luke 12:48

Ratt - Who do you mean by 'Jehovah God' exactly?
How can it be simple when it is being claimed that Jesus raised himself from the dead?

Half Banana - I think you have missed my point. I agree that there is absolutely no evidence that god exists. It is a topic we regularly debate.
Sometimes people post threads with the intention of debating whether or not Watchtower doctrine is consistent with the bible that they profess to follow. That is a legitimate thing to do. Replying that god isn't real is true but not helpful.
Snakeface - I think debate about religious topics on a religious discussion forum is entirely valid. I will continue to discredit theism. It doesn't mean I need everybody to agree with me it just means that I think big questions are worth debating. Some people avoid those types of threads. That is fine too.
Those of you who feel you have to post to discredit other's beliefs actually still have the cult mindset
Actually it is those who refuse to engage in debate and hold their most cherished beliefs up to scrutiny that are more of a cause for concern. Telling ex-JWs that they still have a cult mindset is a cheap shot.

I think it is not unreasonable for xtians to discuss a theological topic based on the presumption that God exists.
If I started a thread on a scientific debate within the broader field of evolution it would be tedious to have to put up with superstitious people interjecting with creationism.
I agree with Tenacious.
