Why believe in a god?
by menrov inif you consider that the god they believe in:.
- cannot be seen or heard and is only known in books written by writers we do not know nor do we have the original writings- does not listen to prayers from believers for security, safety, health, survival, protection, rescue, food etc- promises things that have not come true though had plenty of time to act on the promises- does not provide what you need to live- let's you suffer, struggle, work etc equal to non-believers, treated equally.
........ how does a believer look at his/her parents if they hide themselves, do not provide for you (shelter, food etc), make promises but never live up to these, does not provide what you need to live, treats you like anyone else but not as their child?

Seems like theism doesn't make people any more decent.
I respectfully made two points. Firstly, feelings are not a sufficient reason to believe in god and secondly that beliefs and religious practices do not necessarily deserve respect.
KOB has responded with vile insults and malicious lies. He could resolve that with a simple apology. I have no idea what I did to rattle your cage lancelink or why you thought your nasty comments might help the situation. Were you posting drunk?

Sad that you have resorted to gaslighting.
Tell us one thing about me that somebody who knew me in person would know but I have not shared on the forum.

KOW - What are you ranting and raving about?
I have never met you or your abuser. I have never been mean to you. I try to be respectful of everybody I interact with in real life and in this forum. I have never bullied anybody.
You reacted with anger when I said your post was a poor answer to the question in the OP. As a retired prof you are probably used to people agreeing with you. You became condescending when I didn't back down. Then you became insulting to the point of derangement calling me evil and accusing me of some dark crime. You claimed that my disagreeing with you was making you unsafe.
This is a discussion forum. People will disagree with you and persist in doing so despite your protests. Your conduct in this thread has been utterly appalling.

I used to work on food distribution at Murrayfield. Choc bars were outstanding. The doughnut making room was up a long flight of stairs next to the cake room. One time I slipped off a step with a full try of cream cakes and dropped them all over the stairs.
The smell of hot doughnuts still takes me back.

If anybody can point out to me a single occasion where I have 'abused' you on this or any other thread - or anybody else please do so.
Why are you ranting and raving at somebody you have never met and who has done you no harm?
What makes me 'evil'? Because I don't believe? I thought you said we were all free to believe or not. Because I dared to disagree with you respectfully refused to back down when you insulted me repeatedly? There is a lot of projecting going on here.
I think you really need to step away from your device for a while and get some perspective. I wish you no ill will.

From your link - One of the worst parts of “arguments”, especially in comment sections of news articles, is that people are insulting, name-calling, and being rude and negative to those who don’t agree with them... People patronize, belittle and blame.. When you do have a disagreement online, use kindness, humility, and tact.

It seems that I always aim for this standard while you are quick to belittle and insult somebody who disagrees with you. The irony is interesting.

as long as you respect their customs and convictions
I think this is the focus of our difference.
I do not respect theism. I don't respect religious dogma. I don't respect child genital mutilation. I don't respect teaching children to believe they have original sin.
I do respect people's right believe things that are objectively false.
I don't like deabting [sic] on the Internet
I suspect you do. You just don't like people answering you back.

No, that isn't what I said at all.
It's exactly what you said.
Why believe in a god? Because you are free to do so when you are outside of the control of a system that says you can't do anything but their way, that's why.
The ONLY sensible reason to believe or to disbelieve is evidence regardless of what version of 'god' you are referring to.
I have my PhD. I'm ready, Cofty.
Did you seriously write that?
