  it's that time of year again when i can get back on the fields with the metal detector looking for ancient stuff.

  the first field to be harvested was full of peas - ideal as it leaves no stubble and it's a two minute walk from my house.

  it has given up two coins in two visits this week.. the first one is a cut-half silver penny from the reign of henry ii.

  The rules are a bit different in Scotland. Everything has to be sent in to the Museum. I'm in England where old silver coins can be kept by the finder unless you find two or more in the same spot.

  All silver or gold objects more than 300 years old must also be surrendered under the Treasure Act.

  Before you buy a detector make sure you have permissions to work on. Remember it is 'going equipped to steal' if you go on land with a detector without the owner's permission. It's not always easy to get landowner's consent. I'm lucky to live in a rural estate that has been inhabited since Adam where I can detect about 1400 acres.

  It's that time of year again when I can get back on the fields with the metal detector looking for ancient stuff. The first field to be harvested was full of peas - ideal as it leaves no stubble and it's a two minute walk from my house.

  It has given up two coins in two visits this week.

  The first one is a cut-half silver penny from the reign of Henry II. The style of the coin dates it to before 1180 which means somebody dropped this over 800 years ago. Henry was responsible for the death of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury - 'Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?' He reportedly wore a hair shirt for the rest of his life in penitence.

  Very few people used money at this time, most trade was done by barter. In order to spend half a penny you literally cut the coin in half. The picture is a composite showing both sides.

  
  

  The second is a groat (great penny worth fourpence) of Mary Tudor, daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Their divorce led to the establishment of the Church of England. Mary tried to reverse the break with Rome and became known as Bloody Mary for her persecution of Protestants. This coin dates to 1554/5 the same year that she burned hundreds of Protestants at the stake. In common with most coins of her reign her portrait has been rubbed out by disaffected subjects.

  i have been invited to speak at an international cultic studies association workshop this fall.

  i could use your help in focusing on my presentation subject.. these workshops are for former members of any cult or other high-control, authoritarian group, not just jehovah's witnesses.

  last year, i spoke at one of their larger conferences in europe.

  JP - Really interesting ideas you have come up with for your presentation. You should try to find an opportunity to speak at a future forum where you can put the whole theme together.

  Personally I am really interested in number 2 regarding our core beliefs. Unless former members of high-control groups deal with these they will struggle to make progress in other areas.

  For example ...

  Us versus Them - Until we see ourselves as fellow travellers with the rest of humanity we cannot build authentic relationships and will go on living in judgemental isolation.

  Angst - Cult members see causes for dread everywhere. Every event is seen as proof that the world is 'going to hell in a handbasket'. This is the best time in all of human history. Until ex-cult members grasp this they will continue to be cynical and distrustful.

  Utopian Delusions - There is no such thing as 'perfection'. There never was. This is as good as it gets. Until we accept this reality we cannot begin living.

  That's my first thoughts but will think about it some more.

  Newspaper reports: Dutch government will initiate inquiry into child abuse within JW community

  today a dutch newspaper published an in-depth follow-up item on jw abuse issues.. the most interesting part of the article is this:.

  the politicians also let themselves be heard.

  a month ago the house of representatives voted unanimously in favor of a motion to enforce an independent inquiry into abuse within the jehovah's witnesses, as the organization refuses to initiate it.

  Doubter - Watchtower's child protection policies and procedures are not fit for purpose. They have created an environment where pedophiles can offend with impunity. This fact has been recognised by authorities all over the world.

  There was a time that the general public associated JWs with their beliefs regarding blood, or with the fact that they don't celebrate Christmas and birthdays. Increasingly it is the case that your organisation is best known for child-abuse scandals.

  You are on the wrong side of history. You might lack the moral fibre needed to disassociate yourself from this mess but you don't need to become an active apologist for it.

  Contradictions!

  quite regularly at meetings jws mocked worldly people and apostates(anyone who had left the "truth") for saying the bible contradicts itself when it is in complete harmony from beginning to end apparently.

  can anyone point out some of the contradictions they know of?

  they used to laugh at the fact people on the doors would say the bible contradicts itself and when they asked the householder to show them where, they couldn't..

  The most compelling contradictions are found by reading the synoptic gospels 'horizontally'. That is, read an account in Mark (the earliest gospel) then read the same story in Matthew and Luke.

  It is impossible to reconcile Jesus' birth and death narratives.

  Was Joseph and Mary living in Galilee and then went down to Judea and later returned to Galilee, or were they living in Judea and then later fled to Galilee?

  On what day did Jesus die, the Passover or the day or preparation for the Passover?

  At what time of day was Jesus impaled? (You will need to include John's gospel for this one)

  Who went to the tomb and what did they see?

  Did the resurrected Jesus meet his disciples in Judea or Galilee?

  the watchtower make a bold brass article on their own website claiming that jesus is not the alpha and omega, yet however, god's word explains in clear detail that he is the alpha and omega... do we therefore trust what the watchtower says?

  Perhaps the most powerful argument against the WT position in the book of Revelation is the fact that everything in heaven and earth fall down and worship Jesus and the Father without distinction.
